Divya V. "High Five is definitely my favorite Ramen spot in Chicago! I usually order the Maitake Ramen without seasoned egg with half spice level. The taste is SO good, not even hyping up! The broth is made of mushroom, and it's delicious! My boyfriend got the Shio ramen without pork belly and he liked his Ramen as well. The only meat they have is pork belly, no chicken/ beef. I also ordered a snow maiden Sake along with my Ramen and the combination was perfect! Be careful of what spice level you choose, they definitely aren't joking when they say that their spice levels are feisty! This Ramen spot has very limited seats (not more than 10-12) They do not take reservations and usually wait time is a lot (at least over an hour over the weekends) My boyfriend and I usually write down our names and explore West Loop area in the meantime. The ambiance is a bit rusty and gives a typical speakeasy vibe. Our server during most of my visits was Shayan and she is pretty cool. I love her sassy and witty comments! I recommend this Ramen spot 11/10. It's simply the best!"

Luke C. "This is a ramen/japanese restaurant.I was very surprised at how delicious this restaurant was, given that it doesn't only specialize in ramen. I got the miso ramen. The broth was very good. It was slightly sweet, and slightly sour, but still had a great pork broth flavor. The best thing about this were the ramen noodles. They were homemade, and super springy, and had an amazing texture. You could feel the edges of the homemade noodles because they were rectangular shaped. One of the best ramen noodles I have had.The pork belly was very flavorful. It must have been marinated or cooked for a long time because the flavor was good throughout the entire cut of meat. The egg was good, because it was jammy inside. I also liked the buttery corn topping. Other toppings (menma, kikurage, green onions) were as expected. The only thing I didn't like was the fried nori. I think it was weird they fried it, and it ended up tasting weirdly stale. Maybe they should just do a regular piece without first. Service was very fast, given that I came on a wednesday night. There was no wait and the place was half empty. Ambiance is on the darker side."

Lee L. "Four stars for the food. Two stars - maybe even one star - for the service. We came here on a Friday evening to take my daughter and her friends to dinner. There were seven of us in the group and the restaurant was not busy at all, so we were able to find a table right away. Someone brought us water and told us to scan the QR code to see the menu, then someone would come by to take our order. I prefer physical menus, but I've seen this electronic format become more common so I didn't think anything of it.So we made our selections and waited. And waited. And waited. We saw at least 3 people who appeared to be FOH staff walking back and forth but they never made eye contact and he had to literally wave and shout at someone to come take our order. They looked almost bewildered that we actually wanted to order food at a restaurant.Once we ordered, the food came out fairly quickly. We shared an order of wasabi string beans which was delicious. I had the black garlic tonkotsu ramen, which was overall excellent. The broth was rich and almost buttery, but the noodles weren't quite the right consistency. There was a decent-sized chunk of pork belly, but they could have been a little more generous with the vegetable. The egg was way overcooked - really, it shouldn't have been served at all. Other people liked their ramen as well - the level 3 "Hell Ramen" was a hit, but not nearly as spicy as was implied by their rating scale. Someone got the clams and pork over rice, a dish we hadn't encountered before, and this was also pretty good but maybe a little heavy on the salt. After we finished dinner, there was more waiting. No one seemed interested in bringing us the bill. I half suspect that we could have walked out of there without paying and nobody would have noticed. In the meantime, another group had been seated next to us and the waitress struck up a nice conversation with them - after bringing them a set of paper menus! I guess we didn't look like the type of group that deserved the courtesy of half-decent customer service. The final annoyance was the automatic 18% gratuity that was added for groups of 5 or more. Honestly, they didn't warrant that amount. We won't be back."

Staff were kind, food came out quickly, and their menu is super extensive. There is a great combination of different cuisines, but also some safer choices for picky eaters such as rice bowls and yakisoba. We had three different kinds of ramen (pork belly and chicken varieties) and the steak yakisoba. The steak was cooked so perfectly and you get a very generous portion for the price. The ramen was absolutely delicious and all of their ramen are pretty much completely customizable. They have set bowls that you can order, but they also have a create your own version, which is really nice if you want to make everything to your liking. The broth was delicious, vegetables and proteins were cooked to perfection, and I want a bowl of their ajitsuke tamago (ramen eggs) alone. I cannot wait to come back and I am hopeful this will be around for a long time!"

About the only complaint is it's not exactly that much food. The sushi is fresh though. After looking around for a place to get sushi, we chose to come here. It's conveniently close to the Damen Blue Line. This place has a cool vibe. Kind of quiet. The prices aren't that bad, especially for around here where it's hipster stuff. It's about $6 for a basic roll. We got a few of these. Best one was the Avocado Roll. It was good in spite of being simple. An example of how good food doesn't need to be elaborate. The rolls were as fresh as food gets. For sure it's pretty easy to find sushi around here but it's harder to find it fresh and cheap. It's possible to get both here. There's also more on the menu such as gyoza, ramen, and other good Asian stuff."

It was spicy with a ton of chili oil. Otherwise it was great. The small is just a normal bowl, it's small. Dont expect it to be a full meal and it's full of noodles with little broth. It barely tasted like miso at all, it was fairly bland and mostly just spicy. Not salty which is great! Noodles are a little thicker here. Spicy miso veggie soup - very good! It's a quiet spot and the perfect place for some assorted sushi rolls. They have a large menu with their main best sellers being their sushi rolls and poke bowls. I love that they have it separated as "beginner rolls" and "adventure rolls". You already know I primarily only look at the adventure rolls ;) But it's super nice for folks who haven't ventured out into the sushi world yet and want to start off with more plain rolls. You also have the option of ordering either 4 rolls (for a cheaper price) and 8 rolls (for a higher price). I love this option! More restaurants should have this so people can order more and less rolls that sound appealing to them or if they simply want to try something new, they won't be stuck with a full roll to finish. They also have ramen and various appetizers and seafood dishes. The staff here was super polite. I mean seriously, they were so hospitable and welcoming I definitely noticed it immediately. You'll have to be patient, they don't have a lot of staff. We ordered tako karaage (fried octopus), croquettes, Taiwan style tonkotsu ramen with 2 pieces of chashu, and the deluxe bento with butashoga (ginger pork). I had a bite of the pork and it was delicious. Ginger was not overpowering. Tender meat. Prices were very affordable and cheap. Service was great and he brought out our food hot and freshly made. For a place that does delivery, Blowfish does a pretty good jog of getting your food to you while it is sill hot and that is a plus for me. They have the usual appetizers. We always get the Gyoza (pan-fried beef dumplings topped with sweet & sour sauce, and scallions), Shrimp Shumai (steamed dumplings topped with sweet & sour sauce, and scallions) and Pork Buns (Holland pork belly with sunomono salad in steamed buns). All are good, but pretty standard fare.Where Blowfish excels is in the ramen. I love their Classic Ramen with the "Tonkotsu" (pork) soup noodle topped with Holland pork chashu. I usually will request extra noodles and pork, or sometimes brisket added to it. This will create enough of a meal to cover two days. I love their Tonkotsu broth, it is as they describe, silky but I am going to throw in smooth as well. The Queen goes for the Beef Brisket Ramen because she loves brisket and spicy stuff. I don't mess with this one because of the chili peppers, but if you like it on the spicy side, this one is for you.The Doctor and The Queen are fans of the Salmon Sunrise Bowl (Fresh salmon, smoked salmon, edamame, avocado, scallions, shitake, mango, pickled cucumber, sesame seeds topped with shallots, creamy yuzu mayo, sweet soy sauce, wasabi ponzu, shallots, and tobiko). The Doctor says that is very fresh in flavor and he usually cleans his bowl when he orders this.California rolls were good, but by the time you get ramen and appetizers, you ain't got no room for them. We just might have to do a ramen free night in order to try out some of the rolls. For now, the ramen is it for us."

There are a few outstanding ramen spots in the Chicagoland area that I'm aware of and most of them are out of my way with most locations in the Northwest suburbs and Chicago. Oftentimes I'm not willing to go the distance so finding a decent Ramen spot less than a half an hour from the crib is a challenge. Ramen House Shinchan is within driving distance limits and with all the glowing reviews, I had to try them out. I've gone twice (both dine-in and take out) and I wouldn't say this is the best Ramen I've had but in fairness it's also not the worst. Service is courteous, often times prompt and their Ramen is decent. Typically, when I order ramen, I get the Tonkotsu. The broth is good and the noodles are nice and firm. The pork is sweeter than what I'm used to having. Sweet pork is not my preference and unfortunately the meat was overcooked on both visits. The price point redeems everything else which ensures a decent meal for value. My parents were with me during my dine-in visit and they chose to skip the ramen menu and ordered an entree (Curried Pork Katsu). I had a few bites. The pork meat was tender and I really enjoyed the crispiness of the fry. The curry sauce was nice and creamy and the pickled red pepper worked well with the hot steamed rice. The place is busy on the weekends so expect a wait at a table. Not sure if they do reservations but I would secure one if you can. Parking was a breeze with a decent sized lot shared with the Jong Boo market."

From all the polar opposite reviews we really didn't know what to expect. Many complaints of weird or bad service but that was not the case on our end. To start, there's maybe 20 seats available at the restaurant and many of them you sit in front of the chef preparing the food. My husband and I ordered the red miso with egg which was INCREDIBLE! First time having red miso and it had wonderful flavoring, heavier than the white miso but absolutely incredible. The table also ordered white miso with vegetables, curry ramen, and the hotdogs. Everyone loved their food. I actually think this place has better ramen than a lot of places in Chicago. We had good service and everyone was very friendly. I have had their karaage before, but now they have added sauced options. We had the Smokeshow, and it is indeed a little show coming in a glass dome filled with cherry smoke. The sauce on these is a ginger sesame sauce, and it is sooooooo good!
