"Our order was really late for delivery, which was annoying after a long drive. The food was fine, but it was like eating Amercanized Chinese food from the 90's. It was good but not great. I wouldn't get it again."
"I don't know why it took so long for me to write a review for this location even though I have been here many times. It's just that restaurant that if you don't know what to eat with so many changing options in Chinatown, you will not go wrong turning back and choosing it. Yesterday we arrived in Chinatown just 1 hour before a concert that we were going. We walked down that street and every restaurant was pretty busy but not interesting to us. For some reason, Lao Szechuan was not busy at all, so we walked in and asked if we could get food within 15 mins. The server was so friendly and promised that's no problem at all and helped us order right away. Amazingly, yummy food was served fresh and hot out of kitchen within 8 mins!!!! Thanks to the restaurant, we ate well after a long drive and before a long night. Now the food: highly recommend all of what we ordered if you are looking for more authentic Chinese flavors not American style walnut shrimps type of food. Non spicy options: Sole Fish Fillet Black Bean Sauce and Green Bean Szechuan Style are both very tasty. Particularly, their green beans look green but are so flavorful with no unpleasant veggie raw taste at all! Just in case you don't know fishy taste- they season the green beans with a bit salty marinated fish which is yummy to me. Spicy options: need I say more? Please order their spicy chicken - crispy but not dry at all at an acceptable spicy level. Mapo Tofu was a classic, you will not go wrong. The restaurant got busy after 7:15PM. So I guess you need to visit early so you don't need to wait."
Bok choy, 1/2 braised egg, roasted soy beans, and scallions.

Visit Restaurant Page"Authentic is definitely the word for this place. The Sichuan food is exactly as you would get it in China. I ordered delivery, and it arrived hot and freshly made. Six pieces of Shrimp Shu-Mai made a great appetizer. I like mine spiced up a bit so I dipped it in Sriracha. The other appetizer I tried was the Shanghai Spring Rolls. It was amazing how these had retained their crispness during the trip. Some of the best I've had.Salt and Pepper Ribs were good, but one of those authentic dishes where you spend a lot of time spitting out the bones, just as in China. The highlight was the Dry Chili Chicken. This s about half dry chilis! You don't want to eat these unless you really have a tolerance, because when they rate this dish with two chili icons, they mean it! The chicken was nicely crisp and suffused with the chili and garlic flavors.Even the fortune cookies (which are actually from San Francisco, not Asia) had authentically misspelled words!Best Sichuan food I've had in Chicago."
"I'm a really big Lao Sze Chuan fan and I've been to the South side Chinatown, Uptown and Evanston locations too. Of course I've been to this Skokie location a number of times and I don't know how I've missed writing a review for them. Because this is the most convenient to me, I've eaten here the most between the 4 locations. They have solid crab Rangoon, egg-rolls, Mongolian beef, hot red chili with chicken, fried rice, and my favorite - fried eggplant with garlic and minced pork. This time around, I ordered shrimp with lobster sauce and it did come out like a soup (as pointed out by Teena). Not the best and not the worst. I was expecting it to be a little thicker. I'll be back again because of the numerous good choices and location. I also try to force myself to have something new, otherwise I'd be sticking to egg foo young."
"I almost never post on Yelp but the 3.5 stars for this restaurant is a culinary injustice second only to world hunger. For background, my grandmother is from south China near Sichuan and I'd frequently visit growing up. I have yet to find another restaurant in the city that reminds me more of her and delivers such powerful childhood nostalgia with each bite.Chef Zhou is a true master of his craft. The jab-jab-punch of garlic, ma la, and chili in his Dry Chili Chicken still knocks me out my seat each time even though I know to brace for flavor impact. His Mapo Tofu is genuinely "ma" spicy (ask your Chinese friends what it means if you need) and I haven't had Yu Xiang Rou Si (Pork in Garlic Sauce) this authentic since I was in Cheng Du that I can't even bring myself to call it by its English name. Our other favorites are the Garlic Fried Prawns and the famous Boiled Fish Fillet in Spicy Szechuan Sauce (Shui Zhu Yu).Mary, Edison, and Meagan make us feel like family every time we dine here. The hospitality they provide with each meal, the efforts they put in wiping and sanitizing each table, the kindness they offer each patron is inspiring. This location opened up last summer, unfortunately during both COVID and a labor shortage (so apologies to the reviews complaining they don't pick up the phone fast enough) and has not received the publicity it deserves. Selfishly, I want this to remain my best-kept secret in Chicago but the folks that work here deserve so much more. I encourage everyone: before you post anything harmful against an establishment or its staff, please consider if the feedback should be geared towards the delivery or ordering platform itself. Chicago winters can be brutal enough already. But I've always entered here with a warm welcome and left with a full heart and stomach. While my grandmother is no longer strong enough to cook, I see her culinary spirit through these doors, welcoming me in, tossing the woks, placing the dishes--asking me what I'd like to eat.Thank you, Lao Sze Chuan."
"really good sichuan food (I would almost want to say they also have very authentic hunan dishes!) very spicy and tasty. The non-spicy dishes are pretty good too, great dumplings and potstickers."
"I came here after a Sox game for takeout to bring back to my place. I ordered both the Spicy Pig Ears and Original Spicy Chunking Noodles and they were both DELICIOUS. Portion size was good and normal for the price point and I devoured my food. I probably should have just eaten there so it was 100% fresh out of the kitchen, but either way it tasted great even 25 minutes later when I arrived home. This place is a sleeper gem for sure - if you are craving more of Chongqing-style of food, come here!"
"Updated review: I haven't come back in a long time mostly because I was intimidated by the choices and not knowing what to order but I took a friend's recommendation and am very satisfied!Xinjiang beef and/or lamb is fire!!! So much flavor, nice cumin notes and spicy! Yummy! I don't usually dig lamb but they made it accidentally instead of beef so I got to try it for free and I'll be having it on purpose in the future. This is the second time I've had Lamb and enjoyed it (the other good Lamb is at Uncle Zhang's in the dumplings!)I ordered the crispy pork ribs and asked for gluten free, they were able to accommodate and those things are soooo tasty! I'm a little baffled by the crinkle fries in it, but they're tasty too so no complaints. And of course the stir fried green beans are the bomb. Those didn't stand a chance at being leftovers! They're friendly and fast with takeout and it still tastes great when you get home. See you next time Chef Xiong!"
"Family reunion always means dinner at Evergreen! Finally introduced my daughter's bf here after raving for years. Delicious big egg rolls we gulped down so fast I forgot to take a pic lol. Rolling in were some of our favorites: lobster w extra lobster sauce, beef green beans in black bean sauce, baby bok choy, fish filet tofu vegetables and I mean perfectly cooked/flavored steamed flounder. Every bite was so satiating felt like taste buds dancing up a storm :p. Service is always super friendly, efficient and kudos to hostess Bing who's been there 10+ years and remembers & welcomes us like family. Drool over these pix and eat or take out there soon! Easy street or meter parking. Spacious dining room."

The Chinese food here is amazing! I've searched long and hard for good general tsos chicken & I finally found it! This is not a restaurant. The inside is a small ghost kitchen. I suggest you order on their app! You save 10%! Will be back soon :)

You MUST come here when you're in Chinatown. Lao Sze Chuan has changed Chinese food for me. It's completely different than what I get back home. It's not overly salty like most places are. Everything was amazing - tasty and big portions! Come hungry and you will not be disappointed :)

Chengdu Impressions (the Halsted restaurant) was basically empty on this Saturday evening and I couldn't figure out why?The menu is all encompassing, the staff is very nice, its very clean and it's on a fast paced, action packed street, which make it fun.Well, maybe too fast and too much action, because, as we were seated, over 1,000 (or more) naked bike riders filed by this restaurant honking, ringing bells and acting as uninhibited as a totally nude person in public can act (ya gotta LOVE Chicago)!Anyways, us three ordered:* Our Won Ton soup was piping hot (just the way I like) and delicious* The Dad Dan Noodles was a terrific version of Spaghetti Bolognese except Chinese style* Our Chengdu Fried Chicken was this spicy, crunchy, very tasty dish that we devoured* The Shrimp with crispy rice was fantasticBut the star of "This" show was the Garlic Pea Leaves - they were so good we could have easily ordered a second round of this outstanding dish* Our beers were ice cold and went well with everything we orderedEverything was very good here and I will definitely come back.

We were in the area and our party of 4 came here out of convenience for a nearby dinner. It's my first return visit in 9 years and it's still a moderately popular place for the locals. Our party ordered:- garlic peapod leaves, $17.95- dry chili chicken, $17.95- Szechuan smoked tea duck, $19.50- combination meats chow mein, $14.50- xiao long baos (8), $10.95Service wasn't great as there were no menus nor water for a while as we sat and waited a bit. When the server finally did come, she was attentive from that point on. The food quality was nothing to write home about. The dry chili chicken was particularly disappointing as it was more like popcorn chicken being basically small overbattered pieces. I recalled this signature dish being better. The peapod leaves were not fresh. The XLB's were ok. The space has low ceilings and it got pretty loud even though the place was only maybe 60% full. Overall, I'd personally take a pass, unless convenience is the key driver.

This is one of the 20 top meals they recommend that you try while visiting in Chicago. The dish they recommend is their braised tofu in stonepot. It did not dsappoint. We also got their Sting Bean Spicy Black Bean Sauce, This dish was delectable. One of my favorites were their Xiao Lng Bao. So delicious. We also got their fried rice with egg. This dish was a nice filler. I am a fan of this restaurant because it is as authentic as it gets.

I love this place which is located in the food court basement of the "Heungseng Square," building next to Qing Xiang Yuan Dumplings. The Szechuan food is delicious and authentic. I love trying their Chef's Specials which are too numerous to mention here. One of my favorite Chef Specials is the Spicy Pork Intestines & Chicken (with potatoes). Their entree sizes are large enough to share for two adults. Service was excellent. It is next to Elitea's stall which is my favorite boba tea spot in Chinatown and less expensive than competitors. The food court has dining tables so you can eat inside.

I came here once to try it out. We did a mix of 2 pork and 2 beef baos. The baos were a good size and they were flavorful. Meat was fresh and bun was soft. I honestly forgot what my main entree was but it was very decent. Broth was savory not watery. Meat and egg were delicious. Noodles were soft and a little chewy. Service was good. There were plenty of tables to eat. We did paid street parking. Prices were okay.

Another excellent 5 star meal here! Got the usual:Pea sproutsPopcorn chickenToothpick lambBeef Brisket Dry PotBeef tongue in peppercorn soupFish filet in peppercorn soupOther dishes are good too, but above are our favorites. There's a rumor they're closing by end of November this month, but I hope it's not true...
Visit Restaurant Page"Opened six months ago, this is Chengdu's 3rd location in the Edgewater neighborhood serving Szechuan cuisine. The interior is spacious and simply decorated with a couple of pieces of art on the walls. The chairs and napkins are in popular red in Chinese culture. Depending on who you ask, red symbolizes power, celebration, luck, joy, and even happiness. My family ordered a few dishes to take home over the phone. The person who took my order was very pleasant and friendly. I enjoyed a great deal of the dishes. Here are the dishes we ordered.Garlic pork (cold appetizer) - although it was quite good, it lacked fresh garlic. The portion is large compared to other Szechuan restaurants I've been to. Fu Qi Fei Pian (cold appetizer) - a mixture of sliced beef and tendon tossed in chili oil. It was flavorful and delicious.Twice-cooked pork - tender pork cooked with leek and peppercorn. I loved the flavor of the pork. It was perfectly cooked.Dry chili chicken - unlike others I've tried before, Chengdu's version had a perfect balance of chicken and chili. I loved the crunchiness of the chicken that was deep-fried and then tossed in dry chili and chili oil. It was my favorite dish of the meal.MaPo tofu - very, very good! The thick sauce had a hint of peppercorn but not overpowering. It was perfect with steamed rice.I can't speak for other locations, however, this one is BYOB. There is parking on nearby residential streets if you are lucky. Otherwise, pay street parking on busy Broadway Street is the only option that can be challenging.Highly recommend! I'd order again."
"Authentic. Chinese. Street. Food!!! Here you can indulge in the flavors of food from ChenDu, which is the capital of Sichuan, in China! The spices and flavors in the dishes are so tasty. Here's what I tried:Tempting Bon Bon ChickenFiery Spicy Fries DelightsHot & Sour Fern Root NoodlesWholesome Wonton Chicken SoupSingle Choice Hot Pot w/imitation crab meatThree CannonsChengDu Osmanthus CakeMango Soda Drink 芒果少女心The Bon Bon Chicken was my favorite! It was so many flavors at once with the chili oil, soy sauce, slight sweetness and sesame oil. The Wonton chicken soup is so warm and comforting and the dumplings are made in house. I love how airy and modern the space is; there is room for big groups - which I really like. Put them on your list to visit and tell em that Bri from Planes and Plates sent you!"
"After some amazingly delicious meals at Peppercorns, I was a tiny bit disappointed in my last takeout order from here. Granted, I did try a few different things this time, and generally, the flavors were still good but it just didn't blow me away as much as it has in the past.Double-cooked pork: I generally love this dish. They slice the pork super thin but for some reason, Peppercorn's pork belly slices often are a bit flabby and floppy--I want a bit of wok hei or crisp to it! This time it was still good but the pork belly was a bit salty while the garlic greens could've used a tad more flavor. Not very spicy.Fried fish with chili: This one was a new dish for us. I thought the flavor was good BUT the fish was over-fried and tasted kind of fishy. Loved the green beans in it though! Not very spicy, again.Mapo tofu: Always a hit. Theirs is super thick but has plenty of mala flavor. Also, the portion size is great!Dry pot cauliflower: Loved that this dish came with a bunch of different veggies. I know, it's not the best takeout dish since if you dine in for a dry pot dish, usually the food inside can keep cooking away and caramelize. It's a more mild flavor and definitely need to mix the dish to get the sauce on everything.I used to like this spot more than Chengdu Impression because it felt like the flavors were more complex. Would still go again as everything was still delicious, though! I'm surprised it doesn't have a higher rating on Yelp!"
"Very friendly service makes this place a 4 but my dish was lacking in flavor, which drops the score. I stopped here while visiting another business in the area. Ordered my food because of the 15% off Happy Hour price advertised. Food was ready within 15 minutes. I ordered Chicken Chow Mein and Orange Chicken. I was underwhelmed with noodles and flavor of Chow Mein. Orange chicken was good. Quantity of food was great. Quality of chicken was good but Chow Mein fell short. Chow Mein was a disappointment and rate that dish 2.5. Sad when Panda Express beats them in noodles and flavor. Overall, I am not eager to try again. Location is central off of Ashland with plenty of parking. Staff were polite and restaurant was clean."
"I hadn't been to Chinatown since the early 2000's, and wouldn't have recognized it had I been dropped in. The pedestrian avenue shoulder to shoulder crammed with tourists, the lines out the door for boba tea served in bottles shaped like donuts, the dumpling and barbecue houses set right in a row with hardly any room for differentiation. I was not prepared for this overstimulation (or to wait an hour to eat hand pulled noodles), and retreated to a more familiar, comforting overstimulation: the basement karaoke mall food court. In much of Asia (if not usually the states) mall food courts can hide some tremendous food under an unpretentious curtain. This was the case here. J's Snack House served me a bowl of fiery House Special Snail Noodle Soup (ordered medium-spicy, so beware) that tasted as though I was still back in China in 2013 at some unassuming train-station adjacent stall that served better food than I'd find in my home city in weeks. The soup comes with a good scoop of black, curled snails, only one of which had any sand to it (a pretty good percentage), thinly sliced crispy bean curd, bok choy, a sprinkling of peanuts, some pickled vegetables, bamboo, and a ton of rice noodles. And like I mentioned, it was HOT, cry-into-your-soup-bowl hot. It contained just a prickling of numbing spice, not enough to take out your whole throat. Most of it was regular chili hot. But it's not only hot, it's also sour and floral and a tiny bit earthy from the snails and just fantastic.I told this to the woman who ran the stall; she seemed relieved and her face broke out in a smile. She asked me if I didn't think it was too sour or 'smelly'... it made me sad that she ever worried for one second about her PERFECT soup.Great Chinese food, the kind of Chinese food that would not be out of place in China, is hard to come by in Chicago; this is a special place."
"Looking for a new place - this did not disappoint. We tried Beef with. Broccoli, shrimp fried rice. My husband liked the egg rolls."
"This is one of our favorite restaurants in Chicago!Authentic Sichuan food with different spicy levels (you could always tell them to make it a non- spicy version and they are very accommodating).Favorite dishes:- Xiao long bao (pork buns, home made by the restaurant, not the frozen ones from Asian market, and it tasted much better!)- spicy beef noodles (the chili oil was really spicy and delicious)- cumin lamb (yummy!)- taro chicken (braised chicken, flavorful)This place is also a BYOD!Service was above and beyond too. Thank you!"
"This place brings back a lot of good memories, I tried them first when I used to live in Chicago. Decided to come back during a recent trip to the Windy City. Loved the food and ambience!!"
"Chinese doesn't get any more authentic. Da Mao Jia is a place that is what you think of when you go to a restaurant in Chinatown. It's actually in Bridgeport, but that's just about close enough for those around it. How about some of the craziest things you have ever eaten, as in brains and gizzards. There's luckily also things for vegetarians. A lot of Chinese restaurants have Americanized menus so it's less daunting. It's not like this here. They have a ton of authentic stuff. Forget about dumplings. It has way beyond that. Holy cow, literally, as you can eat cow brain. Of course I haven't, so when we went here I got something from the slim but good vegetarian friendly options. It's not cheap. This place is costly but it's so good though. Both of us got the Cheng Du Veggies In Hot Pot. It's $18, so it's pricy. This has glass noodles, mushrooms, seaweed knots, and tofu skin. It actually was a lot of food. The broth was thick, and it was more like a stew. Go for some authentic Chinese. It's the place to go for Chengdu dishes. The food is on the expensive side but this is one of the rare times it's worth all that."
"This small restaurant has quite an expansive menu of Chinese and Japanese dishes. I ordered the Country Dragon roll, a unique blend of crispy and creamy, and my dining companion got the chicken lo mein Our waitress was very friendly, checked with the chef in regard to some dietary restrictions, and made helpful suggestions. The ambiance is very festive, hung with lanterns and faux wisteria of pink, white and purple. Overall, a nice local spot for Asian food favorites!"
"I am finding more amazing small restaurants in strip malls lately. Who knew?! The restaurant was not busy on a Thursday evening which suits me just fine. After being seated, the waitress allowed us to chat and catch up until we were ready to order. I enjoyed every dish we ordered. Here is the breakdown:CHENGDU LIAN MEIN - noodle dish tossed in Szechuan oil sprinkled with sesame seeds served at room temperature. The noodle had a nice bite and it was not too spicy. It was simple but delicious.TOFU HOME STYLE - fried tofu with leeks, bamboo shoot, black mushroom, and pork stir-fried in Szechuan oil. The tofu was a bit tough for my taste from being fried too long. It was good, nevertheless.YU SHUNG EGGPLANT - Chinese eggplant stirred fried with ground pork. The eggplant was cooked to a delicate texture. It was delightful with plain rice or by itself. SZECHUAN STRING BEAN - a very simple green bean dish toss with Szechuan peppercorn. One of my favorite Szechuan dishes. The staff is personable and attentive. There is nothing fancy about this place except good food at a very reasonable price and plenty of parking available since it is in a strip mall. I would recommend it to my family and friends and return when I'm in the neighborhood."
"Stopped here on a whim to get a quick lunch. I picked it because it looked convenient and was neat the hospital on the way to O'Hare. We ended up eating in even through the dining area is pretty small, but the wait wasn't long. What I got was some of the most delicious Chinese food I've ever had, all for a very reasonable price. The staff were extremely nice and got the food out pretty quickly. This might be viewed more as a takeout place but honestly just getting the food straight off the stove was great. It's not glamorous but makes up for it by the care put into the cooking. I'll definitely be back in the future"
"Great Chinese food with big portions. Got takeout and everything was good except for the scallion pancakes! They were SO greasy so beware of that. Otherwise we enjoyed everything else per usual. Will definitely return if we are nearby."
