Gino W. "During the pandemic, a friend sent me a list of restaurants to try. Simply Shae was on the list. Because I lived north of downtown Chicago, I rarely got to Hyde Park, let alone to the South Suburbs. Now that I live in the South Suburbs, I had no excuse. Simply Shae is a small walkup, so having a sit-down meal is not an option. Food is cooked to order, not reheated, which means there will be a wait. And if there is a long line before you get there, the wait is that longer. My experience with the cashier was one of quality service. She kept repeating my order -- I ordered three meals -- to make sure she had exactly what I ordered. The stuffed catfish with dressing and yams were outstanding. The shrimp alfredo for the stuffing was just right, not overboard. The yams were Grandma perfect. And the dressing had a hint of sage, not an abundance of it. The fried catfish with spaghetti and greens took me back to Mississippi. The spaghetti was more savory than sweet, which scores high points. The greens were flavored nicely without being too much. The stuffed salmon with garlic mashed potatoes and greens were what I had for lunch later in the week. Talk about some good eating. The portions are large. Some restaurants skimp on side dishes. Not at Simply Shae. Another thing I liked was that the side cornbread is more savory than sweet. They will get my dollars, for true. But they'll get my business before the crowd starts coming."

Sarah G. "This is probably one of the best cafes on campus, so thanks to UChicago for adding a much needed coffee and food venue! And, in case you need it, this place also serves wine and beer, so what could be better than a little wine while doing a little work? Yup, not much can make work better! This cafe has pre-made and made to order sandwiches and soups and some salads, and everything always looks pretty fresh too. So definitely a good option for the food desert that is UChicago if you don't have a meal plan like the students do. This place recycles also which I know sounds lame to write in a review, but I've actually noticed how hard it can be to recycle on campus, so hooray for saving the planet too. They make all of the usual coffee drinks and have some other fun bottled drinks as well, so lots of options here. Then the ambiance is also just so nice and fresh feeling. There are high top tables, couches, regular tables, and the space is so big here, so lots of room to choose from and the free UChicago wireless is there also, so you should be good to go! Definitely a good addition to the area, so very glad it is there! It is not the cheapest cafe in the world, but with not much else around, they can sort of charge whatever they want. I think the food looks better than the latte I had, but still very happy it is around!"

The food was good, no complaints. They have a coffee bar inside this location, I don't believe the Hyde park spot has one."

I got the chai and carrot halwa tart to snack on. The chai was great and perfectly spiced and the carrot tart was awesome. With a super fresh carrot filling and topped with light cream, it was perfect for a hot summer day and not too heavy to eat before lunch. I wish I had the stomach room to try the savory croissants as well but I'll definitely be back for those!"

Located on the corner of 31st South and 49th Ave, this cozy restaurant exudes unique and chill vibes that set the perfect tone for a relaxed weekend brunch. As soon as we walked in, we were greeted by the inviting aromas of delicious food and freshly brewed coffee, instantly making us feel at home. The ambiance of Dulce Mami Cafe is both charming and comfortable. The decor has a warm and welcoming feel, with thoughtful touches that make it stand out from the usual breakfast spots. The staff were friendly and attentive, adding to the overall pleasant atmosphere. Being my first time here, I decided to try the Hawaiian Panini. This sandwich was nothing short of spectacular, packed with an incredible array of flavors. The panini was made with ham, pineapple, lettuce, tomato, onion, and avocado, all brought together perfectly by the chipotle sauce. Each bite was a perfect combination of sweet and spicy, creating a mouthwatering experience that made my taste buds dance with joy. The ham and pineapple provided a classic sweet and savory duo, while the fresh lettuce, tomato, and onion added a delightful crunch and freshness. The creamy avocado complemented the other ingredients beautifully, and the chipotle sauce tied everything together with its smoky, spicy kick. It was a flavor explosion in every bite, truly taking my taste buds to flavor town. Dulce Mami Cafe exceeded my expectations. The unique vibes, delicious food, and friendly service make it a standout spot for breakfast or brunch. I can't wait to come back and explore more of their menu. The woman who made my matcha was friendly and nice. I ordered the hot matcha horchata. While it wasn't the best matcha I've had or made, I liked it. It was a bit gritty (from the rice I assume?), but a good whisking will alleviate that. I recommend watching some of Veggiekin's IG videos on how to make matcha for some help.Anyway, it was still a good vibe. I worked on my planner while sipping on my matcha. From the bread which is soft yet sturdy to the meats (capicollo, salami, mortadella) and the Italian spices with the EVOO, it all comes together for a nice lunch.Check out the chai tea latte. It's a good balance between sweet and spices, and my go to whenever I'm around! Their lattes also hold their own. I made the mistake of going for a small when I should have chosen a 16 or 20 oz. Must be good because it was one of the original tenants. The food has pretty good flavor for something in a food hall, and isn't like canned or bargain like stuff. A place to hang around is at the bar. It has some overpriced cocktails. The food is the main thing. Okay prices on the food especially for around here. The Chickpea Salad is one of the best sides. It's about $6 for a big portion and it's filling. The Veg is the vegan sandwich option. It's about $10 and comes with a side, with salads among the choices. This has arugula, braised mushrooms, eggplant, cauliflower purée, sun dried tomatoes, and zucchini. Big sandwich and is a lot for the cost This seems like a good deal to be honest. Convenient to get to if downtown. It's mainly for people who work around here. They're closed weekends."

I went with the iced knafeh latte off the seasonal menu. The drink is a double shot of espresso and milk topped with housemade knafeh cream, toasted kataifi, and pistachios. The drink was creamy, toasted, and just sweet enough without it being overpowering. I was able to find metered street parking right out front which was really convenient. Fairly okay prices considering the location and how they would be able to take advantage of office workers looking for something convenient in the morning. The inside has some comfortable couches and a few outlets. It has a good choice of drinks. Many things to get any time of the year, chilled and hot. There's often a seasonal menu along with their regular stuff. Coffee here seems like it's epic. This gives a pretty big jolt so maybe think again if you're ordering a large. Last time here it was pretty warm so I got a cold brew. They had some seasonal specials. I had a Babe On Rocks. It's $5 for the regular size. This is a cold brew with oat milk and spice. Among the food here are bagels and donuts. There's not a whole lot to choose from. I usually get a bagel. It's $3.25 for most. They have a pretty limited selection of toppings. Butter, cream cheese, and jelly. The bagel selection is pretty small too. Clearly they're more focused on brewing coffee. It has some things to eat but nothing that makes a meal. The good thing is the coffee is the best around so they know what works."

We elected not to, and they comped us dessert, very nice of them. The menu has a lot of choices, from salads, chicken ribs, steaks and so on. You can bring a crowd here and everyone can find something. One of my favorites is their turkey dinner, it's good, You know when you're craving Thanksgiving and it June, this is your go to. Basically there's only this one small room for a few customers if that, and the menu is small also. That doesn't mean it's bad of course, as the coffee is the most important part. Came here recently one morning and got some coffee and one of the few things they had as food. It has about the same menu at all locations. There's not a whole lot to choose from, but it's good no matter what kind of coffee you get though. It has several choices of cold and hot brews. The best one so far is the Agave Latte. It's about $4 for a regular cup. That's kind of overpriced but it's still not as bad as other places. It's made with agave, almond syrup, dark chocolate, and the Matter Cinnamon Blend. Mostly the food options are only the Taos Bakes bars, which are good to munch on between sips. It's about $3 each. These come in a few vegan flavors and these are also fairly healthy. Good stuff as far as coffee. It's kind of expensive for the amount you get which is the worst thing about it. There needs to be some more food options but the Taos Bakes bars are good for morning snacking."

Regardless what your situation will be, let's have some pocket money ready for "Coffee Slasticarna Drina," inside the strip mall on the corner of Lawrence and Campbell. Hubby and I had two (2) orders of Bosnian coffee, one (1) order of cheese pie (burek), and one (1) order of beef sausages (cevapi) for $20! We ate like royals. The gentleman in charge had a very soothing voice, and he was kind to provide some recommendations and introduce the most popular items. Everything was made to order, so wait was to be expected. Unless you would like to call ahead, I saw a few patrons coming in and out pretty quickly because they had already done so.Don't think about the "burek" as an average cheese pie you see in a coffeeshop or a pie shop specializing all-American style bakeries. They used the semi-sweet type of cheese and appeared a bit "crumbly" like egg white. The portion was quite generous; hubby and I shared the plate. On the other hand, "cevapi" was presented as a Balkan sausage sandwich, with freshly diced onion and sour cream on the side. Pieces of skinless beef sausages were embedded inside the warmed pits bread. It wasn't the easiest thing to eat, yet we managed to devour the entire hamburger just fine. Once again, this entree was also shareable. Everything that was sent to our stomaches was fantastic! They apparently had their regulars and were making themselves at home. They had a washroom all the way in the back of the kitchen. Parking should be effortless. A large strip-mall lot is available. "I recently stumbled upon a hidden gem that combines my favorite things - a cute cafe in an apothecary store. From the moment you step inside, you are welcomed with an apothecary with the modern appeal of a trendy café.I went there for a late brunch with a friend. And we ordered Avocado toast, Bangkok bowl, Cappuccino and Chaider tea. The tea has apple cider (which is quite healthy) but a bit too sweet for our taste and it was a part of a special menu. The star of the show, of course, is the Bangkok bowl. Even though on the menu it says SPICY. It wasn't spicy. Everything blended togther so well and nothing was overpowering. The chunky peanuts were adding it to the flavor. It was served with lime wedge which we didn't need to use as it was perfectly flavorful already. I can't help but sing praises for their avocado toast. The toast is perfectly toasted, with just the right amount of crunch, and the avocado spread is generously creamy, and they used the most perfectly ripen avocados. It was a bit on the expensive side as the cost was $20.95.But what truly sets this place apart is the apothecary element. The store boasts a wide range of herbs, teas, candles, skincare, stationary, and wellness products. Might add some therapeutic dimension to your visit. The service was overall satisfactory, with an attentive staff. Overall I will recommend The Lunchroom.
