"One of the finest culinary experiences in South Philadelphia and possibily all of Philadelphia but is it worth it?I changed my mind approximately four times on choosing a restaurant to go to for a big birthday number for myself however I decided upon Laurel as this birthday was a milestone and I had never had a wine pairing dinner before this occasion which Laurel offered.First of six courses started with a magical presentation of two large oysters over gorgeous rock pebbles that had water poured into them by our server to elicit a smoke rise from the small bowl. Presentation A++. Oysters were bathed in Honey and Camomile on the left side of the oyster. This was a great way to start the experience but I feel obligated to mention when you break down the cost you just ate a $30.00 oyster LOL. Ahhh...Talk about splurging for a birthday.I enjoyed all the wine pairings except the last pairing for dessert. Only criticism I have concerning the wine pairing is I hear most venue's refill pretty quickly once you finish the glass. One of the servers refilled my glass once. Now to be fair the food is coming out very fast at this restaurant, entree after entree very quickly, so it is hard to really time to refill a patron's glass before the next entree/wine pairing, but for $115 for premium wine pairing I think that is worth a mention. You can choose the $85 wine pairing or the $115 premium wine pairing, in my opinion if you are electing to go to a restaurant of this stature opt for the premium and trust the wine sommelier that they task with this service. To summarize, romantic atmosphere creating an intimate dining experience with delicious high end food accompanied with elegant service. Only you can decide if you prefer a more traditional dining experience that is more laid back or a six course set menu prepared by some of the finest culinary masters. As always people SYOY!!!"
"First review of the month and we're starting off with a neighborhood favorite that I'm trying for the first time after all these years! I've been here for happy hour with friends but I've never actually had dinner here. My wife and I had a child free night and decided to stay local and finally try Louie Louie. We immediately started off with the brioche bread which I assumed would be good but not spectacular as it was. Brad was very soft and the marinated heirloom tomatoes with the truffle butter paired so well. I literally could have filled up on that bread. Our server who was amazing, suggested a nice house wine to pair with the bread and our food and he was on point with his selection. I ordered braised short rib which was tender as it could possibly get in so flavorful. The only thing I wished there was less of was roasted carrots and potatoes but I am not complaining at all. I can't even remember the name of a dessert, but it was basically like a cheesecake with a chard orange slice nestled in between it. That was simply amazing. It was super loud there but it was a busy Saturday night and the ambiance was alive and electric. I can't wait to come here for happy hour again and try some happy hour bites. My only tip is to come early because parking is crazy!! Really crazy! lol"

"We've always heard good things about the Good King Tavern, but never thought to come by. I'm really glad we finally checked it out last month because all the good things we heard are true.I have to admit what really brought us here was the fact that they're DOG FRIENDLY! Since we came with our dog, we had to sit outside, but there are plenty of tables inside for indoor dining as well. Even though the outdoor seating area is on the sidewalk, this street is pretty quiet with not a lot of foot or car traffic, which makes this set up so ideal. There is also an awning attached to the restaurant, keeping guests protected from the sun or light rain. As for the food, everything we had from the beginning to end was delicious and on point. During dinner, my husband knocked over his glass of wine. Even though this was completely his fault, our server felt bad and comped our dessert, which was incredibly nice of her. Overall, we all had a great time. Service was great, and the food was very delicious. A lot of times, when we bring our dog out to eat with us, we have to sacrifice eating well. But NOT at the Good King Tavern. Here, we can have our cake and eat it too. I foresee us having a lot of doggie dinner dates here!"
"The Caribou Café has always been a favorite place to stop for a bite in the city. The restaurant is cozy and pretty, the food is always exquisitely delicious, and the service is routinely as pleasant as one could possibly hope. Last night, I was pleased to find that, although there are new owners, everything was just as wonderful as I have always found it to be. Our experience was completely delightful. 3/7/24"
"I've only been here twice, but I will definitely be back a ton more. This spot is the perfect location for a hearty breakfast or a sweet or savory treat. Not only is the food filling and delicious, the prices are really affordable as well. Both times I've come here, my kiddo has gotten the green juice and granola with yogurt and berries. He's not too great with his numbers yet, but based on his reaction to the food and the fact that he eats it all up, I'd say he'd agree with a 10 out of 10. He also really loves that we go inside for a special bakery treat before heading home. Ok fine, I'm not going to lie. It's really me that refuses to leave this place without a delicious treat. For me, I get the eggs with bacon and potatoes. The food is plentiful, fresh and cooked perfectly. Sometimes the kid and I trade a few bites too so we get to try 2 dishes instead of 1. That's a win in my book. So if your looking for something savory, something sweet, something hot or cold, this is your new place to check out."

I think the uniqueness to Laurel is that, there aren't many places in the city that truly give you a Michelin Star type of experience...but Laurel is there. From service, to creativity in the dishes, to the innovative plating...they capitalize on the experience. It comes at a Michelin price, but I would say if you value good food, quality service, and a fine-dining atmosphere, then it is worth the visit. They have a wine pairing to compliment their 6 course pre-fixe menu. I also want to call out that they are great at accommodating vegetarians. They provided my wife with her own meal that matched the main menu. Below is what we had to eat, with some pictures to go along with it. I can say upfront, I thought the quail was the most interesting dish. It was a tender piece of meat, with some oily factors similar to duck, and just totally elevated with the truffle and caramelized onion. Really nice combination of sweet and savory. Surprisingly, I thought the dessert stole the show, which was a Pomelo-Yuzu Curd with Olive Oil, Rose, and Coconut. While it was a fantastic way to cap the evening on such a refreshing disk...it does leave me wondering this question of how good was the food really...if the dessert is what ultimately stood out as the "WOW" dish? Course 1: Bowfin Caviar, Egg L'Arpege, Brown Butter Maple Egg Mousse, BriocheCourse 2: Bay Scallops, Roasted Parsnip Dashi, Kumquat, Pickled Spruce Tip, Coconut Course 3: Brown Butter ROasted Striped Bass, Sunchoke Shiitake Mushroom, Trout Roem Fig LeafCourse 4: Black Tea-Brined Quail, Caramelized Onion, Black & Tan Rice, Date, Truffle Course 5: Dry Aged Beef, Preserved Berries, Parsley Root, Salsify Course 6: Pomelo-Yuzu Curd, Olive Oil, Rose, Coconut Now I have to share the mistake we made, to hopefully save others from doubling down, but we started with drinks and small plates at In The Valley (ITV), which is their sister restaurant & bar right next door. I have a separate review for this location, but the small plates at ITV mimicked what was offered at Laurel. So that was a bit of a let down...since we didn't know what was being served at Laurel. Especially considering the cost as is, it would have been nice to know to just get drinks at ITV and save the food for Laurel.

While floating on this Pale Blue Dot in the middle of an ever expanding universe just trying to figure out where my happiness and purpose lies, I have begun a side quest to find the best Steak Frites. It would be my death row meal. I love steak, and I love fries. So why not?We walked into JUMPIN' Good King Tavern on a Saturday night in the dead heat of dry January... but honestly it hadn't been too bad, no real tests from God yet.We were seated in the dimly lit interior, and I LOVED how small their menu was. Simple and to the point, no fluff. When a menu is too big like DAMN you're just doin too much.We went with Escargots ($12), Mussels ($21), Radish special from the handwritten chalkboard ($I forget), Tavern Burger ($19), and the Steak Frites ($28).I popped both my Escargots and pot style Mussels cherries, and both were great choices. I love trying new things. I'll try anything once, hehe :)When the Steak arrived, I had my first real test from the dry January gods. I wanted a glass of red wine SO bad, let me tell ya. It was the perfect storm to fail dry January: Nothing in that moment could have paired with a steak better than a glass of red, and it was my birthday dinner with my girlfriend, I really don't even drink that much I'm just tryna look rockstar skinny for my upcoming Mexico trip, and.... and then that Kobe Bryant Quote popped in my head. "I'm not negotiating with myself. I signed that contract with myself, I'm doing it." Thanks Kobe. Even from the grave holding me accountable. The Steak Frites was doused in sauce au poivre and I'm normally not the biggest sauce guy with my steak, but this complemented well. Also if you thought about asking how I got my steak cooked the only logical answer is medium rare. Or rare I guess, but you're lowkey a psycho if you get your steak rare ahahaha it's like having cauliflower ear. Don't mess with that guy.Anyways, the steak was very good, but these fries................ I don't even have the words. I am normally a slut for shoestring fries, but these thicker cut fries walked the ever so thin line of being crisped but not too crisped while having an optimal amount of salt.... man. These are a top 3 fry I've ever had, no hyperbole. The only comparison I can make is Islands Fine Burger & Drink's fries........... you probably have no idea what that is but trust me, those are my magnum opus of fries. I was blown away. They made me feel alive, even while knowing I'm just floating on this Pale Blue Dot in the middle of an ever expanding universe.........THANK YOU GOOD KING TAVERN! KEEP SLANGIN THEM FRIES!IG @jnov_Tiktok @jnov__

My friend and I just happened to stumble upon this place when walking around the city hungry. I wasn't expecting to enjoy it as much as I did. The interior had a nice feel, the lighting and the art on the wall with a piano player upstairs. Our waiter was helpful. It was my first time trying escargot and I ended up loving it! The garlic sauce and pastry was sooo good. It made trying something new super easy and not intimidating. The Beef Bourguignon was so rich and hearty I got full so fast but continued to eat it anyway! The beef was so tender and the noodles were good, but the carrots surprisingly ended up being my favorite of the dish! I still think about the bread they brought to the table, to this day. I'm not sure what they did to it to make me love it so much, but it's fresh, and salty and I kept going back for more. Would definitely recommend stopping here for some French food.

We stopped by Crème Brûlée on a weekday morning to enjoy the outside dining before it became too hot. The iced lattes were incredible - I had a pumpkin spice latte...I'm not used to finding these in June, but I was glad it was available because it was just the right amount of sweetness without tasting artificial like some other pumpkin spice drinks. Husband had the vanilla latte and really enjoyed it, as well. The quiche Lorraine was hot, fresh and paired perfectly with a Mediterranean style side salad with pickled onions, tomatoes, cumcumbers, olives, and cheese. Overall, a great dining experience and highly recommend stopping by for a coffee and food!

Me and the missus visited Amuse for brunch on a Sunday. I purchased a voucher for $49 dollars from Travelzoo. The voucher allowed us to order the following: two entree's up to $20 each, two drinks from the bar up to $14 each and two soft drinks up to $6 each.We arrived early and began looking for on street parking but didn't have any luck. We had to pay $30 to park in a nearby lot. So plan for that if you're driving down. The restaurant was very nice located inside a swanky hotel in center city.We were seated immediately and we looked over the menu. I ordered orange juice and the missus had coffee to start. We started with the Potted Trout $12 Smoked Trout / Lemon / Olive Oil / House Made Cracker. The smoked trout was delicious and paired well with the cracker. For our entree's I picked the Croque Madame $17Thick Cut Brioche / Gruyère / Smoked Ham / Mornay / Sunny Side Up Egg / Herb Roasted Potatoes and the missus ordered the Bourguignon Hash $ 17 Shredded Braised Short Ribs / Kale / Jus / Pommes Anna / Sunny Side Up Egg. Both dishes were underwhelming. The croque madame was a big sandwich with an egg on top. The best part was the gruyere cheese and smoked ham. I felt the thick cut brioche was to large for the amount of meat and cheese that was inside. The potatoes were over cooked. The braised short rib in the Bourguignon Hash was salty and not as tender as expected. The potatoes and egg were fine.We finished the meal with two Stormy Maria's their take on a spicy Bloody Mary. The drink was not good. It tasted like cocktail sauce mixed with vodka. I'm pretty sure it had horseradish sauce sitting at the bottom. The brunch got even worse when we got the check and it had a $14 dollar service charge on it! We're in the process of working with Travelzoo too find out why the establishment charged this fee.

Bring cash otherwise you will have to pay 3.5% credit card fee. I completely understand why small establishments don't want to pay the fee however it's the responsibility of these establishments to make their customers aware they will be having to pay a credit card fee. Nowhere on Sontuosa's website is there any mention of having to pay the credit card fee. The 2 times I spoke with them they never told me. They didn't even mention it when they presented us with the check. Had I known I would have been sure to have enough cash with me.Now onto the food. My husband and I shared a caesar salad and while it was very good I thought the price at $14.00 is too high for what you get. In the past 3 weeks I've eaten at 2 Italian restaurants in the area and the most we paid was $10.00.For my entree I had the brisket. It was good but I've had better. My husband has lasagna and it was excellent. Our friends had the grouper special and the spaghetti with clam sauce. The grouper was a huge success. The spaghetti with clam sauce was good but it was another instance having had better. Bread is not complimentary. It costs $5.00. Dessert was very good. Obviously I have mixed feeling about this dining establishment so I'm not sure if I will return.

Small, cozy, sometimes with live acoustic music. Recommend getting a reservation if you're bringing people. One of the few BYOBs in center city! Forgot to bring one? There is a foodery right down the block. Parking is not free and generally pretty hard to find, if you happen to go down further towards south Philly it becomes 2 hr neighborhood parking so it should cover your dinner.Highly recommend the chicken and waffles, portions are huge! We shared a steak and that, with leftovers to take home.Service is okay, they don't really come by to check on you. I had to ask for ice and glasses when I brought a wine... weren't very knowledgeable with that, otherwise everything else was okay!

"Amuse usually means to entertain or charm; however, this Amuse is the sorely-understaffed-but-with-totally-charming-staff Le Meridien Hotel lobby bar and restaurant in downtown Philadelphia. My advice is to not consider it a destination for food and drinks ... unless that objective includes a guest room in the hotel.Because I was staying here for several nights, I definitely found Amuse convenient for a late-night cocktail (or 6) as well as some nibbles to help pass the time. Nothing was horrible ... and nothing was delightful either. I could easily order the Classic French Onion Soup ($8) with 3-cheese Gratin or the board with French Brie and Prosciutto ($14) plus Dried Fruit, Candied Nuts, and Stoneground Mustard again ... or not ... either way, really.Because the service was sooooo slow, I quickly learned to double-up on orders with Makers Mark Old Fashioneds, Bombay Sapphire Gin Mules, and bottles of Dogfish Head 60-minute IPAs satisfying me while my mates opted for Cranberry and Vodka cocktails or classic Tanquery Gin and Tonics.I don't hate Amuse and you really shouldn't either ... as long as your already at the Le Meridien Hotel. Otherwise, Amuse really wasn't charming or entertaining, or staffed enough to be a destination restaurant or bar."
"Food is authentic! Service is great! Indoor and outdoor dining spaces are very pleasant! One thing to consider: Food portion is not large for the price."
"Mabu Kitchen is a favorite of friends who live in Society Hill. No denying our meals were delicious. The experience however, was somewhat below five stars.Though not a fan of kale, my friend insisted I'd love the chicory kale salad. She was right! (I regretted getting one portion to share with T.) Frisee, radicchio, honeycrisp apple, pepitas, poppyseed vinaigrette ..... it worked beautifully. Apparently, one can order the salad as an entree, topped with shrimp. The fish of the night was hake. Our server described it as milder than cod, moist and flavorful. Looooved it! (See my photo.) It was a toss-up between hake or the roasted brick chicken. Based on a taste my friend offered, that too is an excellent choice. The brick keeps the skin crisp and the flesh of the bird moist. Prepared with broccolini and smashed potatoes in pan jus, it's on my list for next time. While certainly good, my husband's confit fried chicken wasn't as "exciting" as the other entrees.Several desserts are listed on the menu, all sounding delish. My friends shared something apple-y. They loved it. T and I went with banana pudding, which may be the best banana pudding I've ever had.So where did the restaurant fall short? It's BYOB without a corkage fee. That's great! But the restaurant is small with some tables one-on-top of the other. During peak hour, it was hard to carry on conversation. Plus the dining room was hot! Did the air conditioner work? Our fish was brought out way before the chicken. (Do we eat, or politely let our meals go cold as we wait?!) There are a few tables outside. Al fresco would be my preference, but my friend said the chairs are uncomfortable, which hurt their backs. When all is said and done, would I return? Yes, in a heartbeat!"
"So, my friend and I were walking back the car from Love park and decided to take a quick detour into the Hotel Sofitel in Philly. For starters, the lobby was very inviting with a welcoming aroma - not food but a lovely scent - so we wandered into the lounge to find happy hour specials. Well, thank goodness we did! We hit the jackpot! Happy hour was in full effect as cocktails were 1/2 off! Yeah!!Our bartender, Kellen, was superb! I mean, STUPENDOUS!! His recommendations were even more tasty than they sounded! He served me up the famous Libertè with a twist of - his special ingredient - that was delectable! It was the perfect mix of sweet and ummm sweet! Just how I like it! My friend ordered the cheesesteak rolls and loved them! Perfect appetizer to the real thing! #wheninPhillyDefinitely hit the Libertè Lounge and get served up a tasty cocktail from the friendly bartender Kellen!"
"My friend and I had brunch at Matines Cafe a few weeks ago when we were in Philadelphia. It's tiny but so charming. We sat outside, which was gorgeous and very comfortable. My friend and I ordered the same thing - their smoked salmon tartine (with cucumber, tzatziki cream, lemon pepper, olive oil, and augula), which was really good - fresh, bright, light, and delicious. We had a couple of coffees as well. There's a small shop at the entrance to the cafe, and the interior of the cafe is as cute as the outside seating area. The service was great. Overall, it's a great place for a quick brunch or for a pastry and coffee to go!"
