"KATY, TX 77449 / GUANGXI, SOUTH CHINA CUISINE / 08-24-23 / TAKEOUT DINNER+The rice noodle portions are great; very filling.+It's awesome that a South China regional cuisine has established itself in the Katy Asian Town & Marketplace shopping district. I know there is another location in the Bellaire area, and I hope they continue to grow/expand their businesses.+The staff was very friendly and the restaurant was clean, with a nice layout.+The takeout packaging was well-prepared.-The bone broth was a little too salty for our liking. Other than the high sodium content, the soups were very flavorful and full of umami.-The chicken wings appetizer left a lot to be desired. The quality of the wings used was terrible, and there was too much fat and breading. Skip this appetizer. Maybe get the Taiwanese popcorn chicken instead?-Some random menu items; i.e., tater tots. Would love to see some more traditional Southern Chinese dishes on the menu, even in the appetizers section.-The website could use some improvement, including some better descriptions of the menu offerings, if they would like to expand their customer demographics. What we ordered:'1 A6. Khadijah L. "The place was clean so it was nice and refreshing to see the minute I entered. I went in at 3pm, weird time between lunch and dinner so the place was empty except for a Vietnamese couple. When dining at a specialty restaurant, it is always reassuring to see patrons who are from the same culture because it's an indication that the food is good - at least for me that's one of the signs I look out for when trying out a new place. I was greeted immediately and invited to sit wherever I liked. The place was quiet but they turned on some pop music after awhile. My server was delightful, had a nice smile on her face. She quickly took my order and even after advising me that the egg rolls might take time and asking me if it was fine if it came after the pho, the egg rolls still arrived first. I was able to enjoy both and took home my left over egg rolls and the remaining hot Jasmine tea that I ordered with my meal. Unlike other places I've tried, the pho broth was more delicate in flavor and had a clean finish on the tongue. I will come back again and looking forward to try other dishes on the menu."

So this is just simply my opinion because obviously others did like it. I ordered the Hot & Sour Soup I did not like it at all I tried eating it but the smell was overwhelming. It's an acquired taste for sure and I would never order it again. We also had an appetizer which was an egg roll, wonton and fried shrimp this was the best of everything I had I actually ate all of it. My entree was the sweet and sour pork with fried rice, I've had better at other places I didn't like the rice the pork was ok I think I was just over it because the soup was just horrible for my tastebuds. The service was really good they came to clear the table often and refilled our drinks. The ambiance is nothing to brag on I myself wouldn't try it again but I would suggest others do because they did have a lot of people picking up orders."

Lou C. "You know why I have not written a review after so many years? I really want to collect enough dining experience here. Yesterday, I was craving for noodle soup but don't feel like fighting the traffic to my usual restaurants 2 miles away.My coworkers always ask me about Shanghai Inn restaurant. To be honest. I don't find the food here delicious. But since it's far away from Chinatown, I have to say just okay.I'd rather go to Panda Express for Americanized Chinese food or Mambo Seafood for shrimp fried rice. I don't have a strong stomach to experiment lunch at Shanghai Inn. I've been here a couple of times when I stayed at Studio 8 next door over a decade ago. I didn't like it then. But I'm willing to try again for my coworkers. Last time I was here 4 years ago I ordered noodle dish called ja chan mien 炸酱面. I ordered a noodle soup yesterday. They had similar runny gravy. Sorry, not my style. Then, the meats had absurd taste. The only thing saved this review from being a 1 star was the eggroll. I considered it authentic to Mandarin cuisine standard that I'm accustomed to. It's a popular lunch spot for some in Northwest side of town and Highway 290. But you just come here to eat food and don't use the bathroom. That was the tiniest men's restroom I've ever seen. Urinal was right in front of a door of one toilet. Another toilet was in front of tiny sink from last century. The sink was wet. I figured there must be running water. But I can't turn on the faucet to save my life.**63rd review of 2018**"

Charlene H. "The service was attentive and quick. I had beef vermicelli and the hubs had shrimp pho. We shared spring rolls. With my vermicelli I also received an egg roll and a shrimp sugarcane roll (maybe not called a roll but anyhow...). The beef was super flavorful and tender. Really good flavor. I did need to use some of my husbands broth because the noodles have zero sauce on them at all. I guess I was expecting something on them so they weren't just a clump of noodles. That being said, with a little broth they were really nice. I definitely prefer the spring rolls to the egg roll. The spring rolls are crunchy and flavorful but the egg roll lacked a crunchiness and felt a little mushy inside. The shrimp sugarcane thing was ok. Probably an acquired taste. The vegetables in my vermicelli bowl were super fresh and crunchy. Overall I really liked the beef vermicelli bowl...with a bit of broth. It was light and satisfying. The shrimp pho was good. The shrimp were nice and big and nicely cooked. I had hot tea, as well. It was fresh and hit the spot. Overall, I really enjoyed the meal. If you're in Rosenberg, give them a try. You won't regret it."

Justin A. "Killer Noodle Tsujita is a ramen restaurant in the Heights neighborhood of Houston, Texas. The concept was started by Takehiro Tsujita who had success in Tokyo, Japan with his restaurant, Seito Masamune Tantanmen Tsujita, in 2003 and has since expanded to 18 restaurants across Japan. Tsujita wanted to bring forth a new ramen into the American community that would not be as heavy in comparison with their popular tsukemen soup (something even children could enjoy). He came up with "Killer Noodle Tsujita" in Los Angeles, California in 2017. Killer Noodle Tsujita features a style of ramen called tan tan men, which is Chinese in origin. The restaurant's signature dishes incorporate dan dan noodles with peanut butter, sesame, and Sichuan spice in the broth. It's definitely a unique style of ramen, but they also have the classics like Tonkatsu, Miso, and Chicken ramen. The restaurant itself has a private parking lot and multiple tables inside with a bar. They even have a section dedicated to toy claw machines where you can spend a dollar per chance to win![RAMEN]+Tokyo (signature dan dan - chicken/pork broth, chili oil, Sichuan peppercorn, sesame sauce, peanut butter, vinegar, white sesame, beansprout, nikumiso, cashew, green onion, and soft boiled egg) for $15.50 - From first sip of the broth, I tasted spice, peanut butter, and sesame. This was a new experience for me. Although I enjoyed it, I would prefer a classic ramen. - 4/5Overall, Killer Noodle Tsujita was a new type of ramen experience for me. Personally, I have never tried peanut butter in my ramen broth, but it was surprisingly pretty good. I do prefer classic ramen, but I would still recommend the experience to others if they wanted to mix things up!"

Their banh bot chien was crispy and instead of cooking with scrambled eggs, they use fried eggs. It was so good! The crisp texture with the runny eggs was to die for. You must remind them you don't want the overdone fried eggs. We ordered the seafood banh khot which had a variety of shrimp, beef and squid. I'm used to eating it with shrimp only but I like that there is variety for those who are allergic to shellfish. The banh khot is bigger than what I know as normal size but I like it. The shrimp are big and the beef was a nice change. My companions thought the squid would be better if it were sliced thinner but it didn't bother me at all. It was tender and not chewy. Some say it is too doughy but ours was crispy. The snails in coconut milk was so yummy and the blood clams were very good, not too chewy. The hu tieu was very clean and full of flavor. The only thing missing for me is the dried crispy shrimp and the chicharon. We also ordered the bun rieu which is a disappointment in many restaurants but not this place. It was beyond good. I've brought other friends here in the last two weeks and they love the food. It is definitely one of my fave Vietnamese restaurants here in Houston."

I find that Houston really doesn't serve fresh Vietnamese herbs with their vermicelli bowls and I feel it adds so much flavor. But most places here just do shredded lettuce, cucumbers and pickled veggies. The noodles were cooked perfectly, the eggrolls crispy and flavorful and the lemongrass tofu was good. I find myself craving vermicelli bowls from this place often but unfortunately they aren't open on Sundays, which is when I want it most. This place has been my favorite Sichuan style restaurant for years. Exactly how you would imagine a classic no BS mom and pop Chinese restaurant would be, traditional Chinese style interior, friendly but basic level service, complementary Chinese hot tea, and owners kids hanging out in the back. Now the food... somehow this place always hit the spot and reminds me of China. Unlike a lot of the Sichuan restaurants in Houston with fancy plates and fusion twist, this place taste like someone from Sichuan is in the back doing all the cooking for you. Couple of my "must order" each time: Hot and Sour rice noodle -- this is my favorite and my reason to be back at least once a month, no other restaurants in Houston can match the taste Lamb with cumin - the lamb is tender, great flavor with just right level of spicy if you like the cumin taste Stewed Chicken Shank - this is a cold dish, boiled chicken in spicy sauce and chili oil I would recommend this place to anyone that wants to try authentic Sichuan food!"

There are limited seats inside the restaurant, and only two tables for seating outside the restaurant. A small family of four or small groups of two would be fine.I had the Teochew Fried Rice Cake, Teochew Satay Rice Noodle with Beef Tenderloin, and Chicken Gravy over Rice. Food took a while to come because they were made to order. Ingredients used in my three dishes were fresh and generous. The Fried Rice Cake was pan fried to perfection. It was soft, and the addition of egg completed the dish. The Satay Rice Noodle had mild taste of satay, soupy, and there were many slices of beef. It was a flavorful dish. As for the Chicken Gravy over Rice, various vegetables and slices of chicken meat with gravy piled on top of rice. The gravy was delicious, and the chicken meat was tender. Jando S. "A lot has changed since my initial review and not in a good way. In short, Bao Shi Yi is definitely becoming more like Bao Shi San. (#1) I have been finding that all of them have taken a step back, but this Med Center one especially. Let me count the ways:* They're close to empty each time I come there. I'm not sure if the takeout and delivery is supplementing the patronage but there is no one here besides the workers often.* Speaking of takeout, the containers are no longer the bougie branded ones they once had but now the standard toss'em after a single use. The others were sturdy and made for really quality takeout ware, but this clearly a cost saving measure. * Dumpling fail left and right. Steamed (水餃) ones are overly doughy and aren't exactly plump. The potstickers / fried dumplings are literally falling apart. It's a bad look and even more unappetizing when they're already so dry. * The congee is very thick. Less like porridge and more like a really hearty chili. The latter usually has meat and beans, but this congee is really more rice than anything else. Even for the century egg + pork (皮蛋瘦肉粥), the portions were skimpy but the rice was clumpy.* Customer service has strangely improved. Phone manners are better than ever, online orders are quick and effficient, and I've been pleasant surprised when I'm greeted up on entering.Things aren't getting cheaper and Bao Shi Yi is no exception. Their prices are a reflection of the Med Center/ West U area, so it can all add up quick. Currently they have their work cut out for them and I hope to see improvement soon. ___________(#1) Going from first (yi) to third place (san)"
