BEST EGG CUSTARD TARTS IN HOUSTON.(Honestly might be the best ever because I haven't had better elsewhere.)I've been holding off on reviewing this place for a long time. But I wanted to visit enough times to see if I still love it - and I do. Eck Bakery is a Houston staple. The egg tarts are always fresh. The base is flakey and buttery. The egg custard itself is absolutely divine. It never disappoints!I got to try the mango mochi for the first time today and OMG. They are amazing. The mochi is elastic and soft. There's actual mango inside. It makes the perfect treat! The downside is that it's more expensive now. I believe it's $1.75 per egg tart. It's definitely worth trying though!

DON'T FORGET TO BRING CASH (although I think they accept venmo too)I came here on a Saturday at noon with my friends and we were very happy to see that there were plenty of egg tarts still to be sold. (My friend literally bought 30 and they still had trays in the back ready to go.) The egg tarts were so yummy. It was perfectly crispy and the inside was so silky and eggy, no complaints here! I think the mango mochi is also a must get. It looked like they had run out, but it's just because they keep them in the fridge on the side, so make sure to ask if you want one! I wasn't expecting that mochi itself to have such a strong mango flavor. And the mango inside was so sweet and ripe. I was expecting the chicken pastry to have just chicken paste inside, but it actually had chunks of real chicken. But my favorite was the curry pastry!

Came in on a Saturday at 9:30 am and I basically got the last egg tarts! This place is very unassuming at first, but once you go inside, the sweetest woman is there to help you. The prices of the baked goods are reasonably priced and it smells delicious in here. I ended up getting only a few egg tarts to bring back to Virginia but decided to try one fresh. The tart was flaky and smelled delicious, and the egg custard was creamy but still had a firm hold. I think this is one of the best egg custard tarts I've ever had!!!!

While it's sad there aren't more Cantonese bakeries in Houston, there is no doubt in my mind that ECK is the best of them all. Short for "egg custard king" (蛋撻王), they live up to their name and would be considered a must-visit for any pastry lover. They are one of my favorite businesses in the city and worthy of my milestone review. (#1)They are a family-owned bakery and are strictly cash only. They sell what they can each day, which means things are sold out often. Their egg tarts are delectable, incredibly flakey, and hold extremely well even in room temperature. I tend to buy them by the dozen, even if the price has risen to $1.75 each. Scoring any of these egg tarts straight out of the oven is ideal, even if there is a wait.Of course like all good bakeries, egg tarts aren't their only bread and butter (#2), their $2.50 chicken puff pastries or chicken pie (雞批) is probably the best I've had compared to any bakery in the city. Their other puff pastries such as the bbq pork (叉燒酥) is outstanding. Another showstopper is their mango mochis, which are served cold and extremely unique. They have a sprinkle of coconut on top but are the perfect summer dessert with this wonderful mango finish and tasty mochi texture.Their custom cakes are not sweet, but worthy of calling in to order. Durian fans will enjoy their durian filled cakes and/or other combinations. They don't look like much but it's hard to find anything like what they do anywhere else. They deserve all the accolades and are truly one of the major gems of the Houston Chinatown scene.___________(#1) Here's looking at you, #4,500. (#2) It's just the beginning.

Run to your ATM right now! ECK is cash only, but it's definitely worth taking a detour to your nearest seven eleven or bank for their fresh, delicious baked goods. Per many recommendations on Yelp, we got the mango mochi and egg tarts. When I first ordered the mango mochi, I was expecting a white mochi with either (a) pieces of mangoes and white cream, or (b) mango cream. However, we got a super soft, mango-colored (and flavored!) mochi covered in coconut flakes and fresh mango pieces inside. It was absolutely delicious, and even my husband, who isn't the biggest fan of mango, loved it. As for the egg tarts, the custard was very egg-y and custurd-y. In fact, the custard center was so soft that I felt no bite at all, and the extra smooth texture of the custard contrasted well with the flaky texture of the pastry. I do see how it can be a lot people's favorite egg tart, but it wasn't my "best" egg tart. Regardless, it was absolutely delicious and we definitely do see ourselves visiting again!!

Still THE best place for flaky egg tart shells! I have been enjoying the egg tarts from ECK for years now. I love the silky custard, the crumbly shell, and the sweetness of the egg tart as a whole. Warm up the egg tarts in a toaster, and voila! Yummy yummy yummy!! The bakery has other delicious pastries too! The fried sesame red bean ball was so tasty. Filling to skin ratio was perfect. The Japanese cheesecake was light and fluffy. It was so good. Try all their pastries! Try them all!

I finally got the chance to try the pastries at this bakery. Previously, I never stopped by early enough during the day, so their pate choux would already be sold out by the time I got there.I bought 2 of each: charsiu pate choux, chicken pate choux, and an egg tart. The puff pastries were light and fluffy, and they're not buttery/greasy at all. The pate choux had a good filling to dough ratio. The charsiu pate choux had the perfect filling in both flavors and textures. Don't expect it to be typical red/sweet charsiu, these are more like regular pate choux filling but melt in your mouth. The chicken pate choux was not bad, but the chicken filling was more on the salty side compared to the pork one. The egg tart was also pretty nice, creamy, and not very sweet. If you're planning to stop by, make sure to bring cash. This is a cash-only establishment.

Hands down the best Chinese egg tarts (Dan tat) in Houston and maybe one of the best in the states. So flaky and delicious when hot. They also have really delicious mango mochi. One of my favorite bakeries in Chinatown due to those two items. They take Venmo now as well. They have a table that you can sit at but this is more of a place for takeout. Plenty of parking in the plaza.

Stopped by on a Sunday at 9am and they had egg tarts, wife cakes, pineapple buns and other items - mostly in the back. They speak English, Cantonese, and Mandarin. The prices are reasonable. The parking lot is shared with some other restaurants so it can get pretty packed. There's a couple long tables but we didn't stay to eat. We ordered the pineapple bun, wife cake, and egg tarts. The egg tarts are flaky and I the filling is sweet egg custard. The consistency is good and they were standard and what you would find at the restaurant or in Asia. The first one I had was not as sweet or flavorful and the flaky crust had some crunch as if it was slightly overcooked. The second one I ate was perfect. Therefore, consider trying two if you didn't like your first one. I would say, perhaps I had one that was slightly overcooked or the flavoring mix was not quite right.
