Joah K. "I pass by Gumrai Thai from work to home all the time and finally decided to check it out. The interior is spacious and cozy, providing a comfortable dining atmosphere. I sampled a variety of dishes: crab rangoon, red curry, panang curry, pad thai, pepper steak, and a sip of their pho soup. The food gives off a very homey vibe and the portions are generous. I loved how big the crab rangoons were, though you taste more cream cheese than crab. Still delicious! The panang curry with tofu and the pad thai were standout dishes--flavorful and satisfying. The pepper steak, however, tasted like an ordinary stir fry I've made at home and didn't impress me as much. The pho soup had a unique twist which was new but enjoyable. For the spice level, we opted for a 2 and added chili oil on the side. The service was good, adding to the overall pleasant experience. While it wasn't the best Thai food I've ever had, it was still delicious and worth returning for. I'll be back to try more items on their menu!"

Madeleine A. "What I appreciated most was the service provided. The food was amazing & when ordering on the phone, the woman helped me choose my order with her favorites from the menu (papaya salad & spicy basil noodle). She also informed me that call in orders & using their specified website to order, give more money back to them then using grubhub or other food delivery services. They also provide free coupons to meals over $30 & they apply it themselves without you asking. The papaya salad could have been spicier but I didnt want to make it too spicy without knowing their scale (I got a medium) but overall refreshing. The pad thai is a classic & I enjoyed how the sweetness evened out the heat in the meal. The spicy basil noodle (medium) had the same noodles as the pad thai & I enjoyed the complimenting fresh vegetables (green peppers, basil, & onions). The green curry was a bit overshadowed by the rest of the meal but I always appreciate Thai curry & its sweet/spicy flavors."

Steve A. "Here is another pretty small restaurant for Thai and Asian food. It offers delivery and takeout. Dena Kitchen is a place to get some classics. Lots of Thai favorites with noodles. The prices have increased quite a bit, which is the worst thing about it you can say. Came at lunch after hearing about it and wanting some hot spicy Asian food. It was not doing any dine in, so we took some to go. The prices have gone up from before, more so than at other places. It's about $10 for an entree. We chose to get one, and split the Pad Kee Mao. Entrees have a protein choice. We got tofu. It was hot and spicy as we like it. There was basil, bean sprouts, bell peppers, cabbage, jalapeños, mushrooms, and tomatoes. Good amount of heat from the jalapeños. The noodles were kind of soggy but okay. Get some spicy ass Thai food here. It has quite a few classics with big portions. There's also lots of choices for vegans and vegetarians."

Steve A. "Guess sixth time is the charm. In what had become an increasingly quixotic quest to dine here, we were frequently met by surprise closings and hours. Nine Thai may have gotten its name for how many times a potential customer has to come by before it's open. Lunch is the best time, as they have combos at a discount. The food is mostly basic Thai but there's some good surprises. After coming here a few times it was always closed, and we had to go to the other many Asian places around here. In Old Town there's plenty if these to choose from, but the good lunch specials here always were intriguing. They only have these on weekdays. It's about $10, and there's quite a few to choose from. These are a big time money saver over the regular lunch and dinner menus. I had the Pad Kee Mao. She had the Pad See Ew, and we got the same combination of sides. Each also has a protein choice. We got tofu. I liked mine a lot. This was flat rice noodles with basil, onions, and peppers. Good side items. There's a soup choice, and we got the Tom Yung. It had a kick. The other side item was vegetable pot stickers. Only a few, which was the only complaint about food. The good thing about that the rest of the food had a lot more. Biggest issue is the place being unorganized and the frequently incorrect hours. It's understandable. They are a family owned business, but it seems like they close up every few weeks."

Monic L. "It's more like a 4.5 but I'll round up. This little sushi Thai spot holds a lot of flavor. Their menu is quite large with so much to choose from. The staff is super friendly and answered the many questions my table had and even flipped through their TV menu because my nephew saw a picture of something he liked but didn't know the name. That extra step they took added to our amazing experience. The service is quick and the food is freshly made. For appetizers started with chicken. Egg rolls and pot stickers. Loved them both. The crispness of the pot stickers was sheer perfection. The crab Rangoons were a bit bigger than I was expecting. It was my first time having them. I'm still on the fence with taste. Their sushi lists has a lot of options we finally decided on three of them and they were all pretty tasty. Sushi is a hit or a miss for me, but this place does it well. The main entrees I always love a good pad thai and this place is up there on my list of pad thai places. The sesame chicken was also seasoned really well. Every one in my group seemed to enjoy their meals. My mom had the salmon thai she was hoping the salmon would have been grilled or something extra it was bland for her. They do a special thing for birthdays which is nice. Overall a great visit and if I'm not trying to go into the city for sushi this place does the job."

Sarah S. "Good Thai option in the area! I've been trying to find a reliable Thai option in the 'hood and I think I may have found it in Rice Cafe. My advice is skip the sush, stick with the Thai.Their crab rangoon is a bit different than what you may be used to as it's more Thai style. It's little deep fried dumplings with a thinner crisp on them and you get 5 little guys for $5. The filling is delicious and it's a great starter. The lime chicken is a dish I'd skip from Rice Cafe. This may just be my personal preference so take it with a grain of salt. I didn't think it had much flavor and it was just way overloaded with cilantro - too much so for my liking. Pad See Ew from Rice Cafe is one of the best I've had in awhile. Chicken was perfect, noodles were perfect and the dish was packed full of tasty flavor.I also ordered a few veggie maki rolls which were not half bad but weren't anything too amazing. Delivery was right on time, you can order through GrubHub, food is good and prices are very reasonable. I'll be back, Rice Cafe, oh yesh, I'll be back."

Opted for a to-go order of Chicken Pad Thai and Fish Cakes (tod mun).Five fishcakes to the order - larger than most I've seen - maybe a little pricier than what I've experienced on average. Nicely cooked - the cucumber sauce that came with them was pretty good too.I asked for a medium spicy chicken pad thai order and it was about right. I've come to learn thatwhen I order "medium spicy" at most Thai places, it comes out with heat that pushes the envelope for me. Just barely tolerable, but not so hot that I couldn't enjoy the dish and everything else within it.Was told 15 minute wait - I'd say it was less than 10 minutes, so they scored on that front! Has pretty good prices for the quality. There's lunch specials and many things for any preferences of tastes. At lunch is the best time to come. It had pretty affordable lunch specials going on. This is only for weekdays. Has a lot to choose from. It's about $9 for the cheapest specials. Pick a noodle or rice. Then choose a protein. It's a few bucks or more for each. This then comes with a side. Add a few more bucks if wanting a soup. The one I got was the woonsen noodles, and I got it with tofu. Appetizer was the vegetable tempura. The noodles were those glassy ones and came with a good variety of vegetables. Carrots, long beans, and more. This was a good amount for the cheap price. Has only dinner on Sundays, but the rest of the week also has lunch. It only does takeout earlier so plan ahead about when to go make an order. There's plenty of options for meat eaters and vegetarians."

The parking is paid metered parking, but there was plenty of it despite being in a busier area. The restaurant was decked out with colors, lights, palm trees and was truly an escape from Chicago. To start we had the Crying Tiger, and the Spicy Crab Rangoon. The Crying Tiger was full of flavor, and cooked to the perfect temp. The steak was delish with and without the dipping sauce, but to amplify the flavors... highly recommend dipping! The spicy crab Rangoon was a fun party of its own. The crunch from the wrap to the warm creamy crab filling, the spice wasn't too crazy with all the cream filling but with the sweet chili sauce it made for the perfect bites. We shared the lava roll, it reminded me of the viva Las Vegas roll from ra sushi, but this was filled with so much more. The crab meat on top had a nice kick to it. As if we weren't already full, we also ordered the general tso chicken sandwich, and the burger to try. Both of which were delish! The general tso was my pick between the two. The pineapple had a nice sweet and tangy flavor to each bite. For dessert, I wanted to try the Vietnamese tiramisu but they were sold out. All the more reason to come back again soon! The service was great, despite how busy they got the team really made each table feel special in their own way and were extremely attentive."

I ordered the Tekka and crunch spicy tuna and they were perfect. The fish was fresh and the rice was a nice portion. Some places are very skimpy with the rice and this place wasn't. These were the biggest rolls I have ever had. I also ordered the Tonkotsu ramen and it was great as well. They pickled eggs which was a great touch. Most places just drop a soft boiled egg in and call it a day. They have a lunch special that $13 for 2 rolls and it was another $14 for the ramen. WORTH EVERY PENNY!The service here was great. The place is small so there is only 1 superstar here. She was amazing and payed attention to everyone in the restaurant. She was patient and very fast. Somewhere I read that they brought it back as it was a well known physical restaurant before. We initially thought about the Restaurant Week menus, but found their Dinner for Two which seemed like a more reasonable amount of food for our level of hunger. I thought it odd that the price for the meal on their Chownow pickup site was $50 and on Preorder through Tock was $60. We called in the order and it was ready for pickup when we requested. Everything was packaged nicely and still warm when we got it home.I would say the food is just okay. Everything was very fresh and the ingredients seemed high quality. I loved that the shrimp was not over cooked and they gave fish sauce instead of soy for the pot stickers. However, it didn't taste particularly Thai and flavors were a bit muted to Midwestern tastes. My dining partner said, "it tastes like Lettuce Entertain You Thai" which is exactly right. We probably won't order again, but the value was good and a solid choice for people wanting beginner Thai."

We ate family style mostly (it was not my red meat day) and had potstickers, fried rice, and various other dishes (see below). They are very smart to have a menu with numbers next to the food so they don't have to hear people butcher the language. I enjoyed everything and took some stuff home. The tofu with greens and gravy was especially good, and it's hard to mess up egg rolls. The service was friendly and efficient, and even the owner/manager stopped by! I like when that happens, but my acquaintance is a long time customer so maybe that was why? It is not a big place but we had a decent crowd for a Tues/Wed. You sounded good on paper but when I picked you up, you looked a bit different than your description. I try not to judge a book by the cover because it's all about the insides and not the outside, right? I was sad when I discovered your substance was just as ugly as your appearance. I'm sorry, but I don't think we will be having another rendezvous. I paid $30 on Grub Hub for 4 rolls, 3 of them quite basic. I love sweet potato rolls - so much so that I ordered 2 right off the bat from Hello Sush for $6 eachi. It's hard for me to talk smack about a local business with lovely employees (the girl was very sweet when I picked up my food), but being completely honest it was the worst sweet potato roll I've ever had. It didn't have much flavor and I just wasn't into it. The description said spicy mayo and cream cheese and I think both were lacking or they put in a tiny tab - not enough to add anything to the roll. I didn't even finish the second sweet potato roll, which for me is like food disrespect...how dare a soul not finish all put in front of them!? Waste not, want not - starving children in Africa - don't be rude & finish everything - etc. etc. etc. The shiitake mushroom roll was actually quite tasty. I'm not sure what they soaked the mushrooms in but it added to the flavor. This roll was just $4 so not badly priced either. Unfortunately it had an issue of being very poorly constructed. It was so loosely rolled that when I picked it up, it nearly fell completely apart.I also got a roll which I don't see on their website menu but was on their GrubHub menu which may explain why it wasn't made according to what they listed. I ordered a Philly roll which was again supposed to have a spicy mayo but no spice nor mayo was on it.
