Pizzeria Toro

Daniel B. "Pizzeria Toro served some of the best pizza we've had in the Triangle. This restaurant has been in business since October 2012 for a reason. That's all you need to know. If you want details, read on.This place is popular and doesn't take reservations. We showed up right around 6pm on a Saturday and it was packed. We were given an estimated wait time of 25 minutes. Our actual wait time was about 30 minutes. I generally don't like waiting at restaurants, but this wait wasn't that bad because we were able to sit at the bar, and the wait was worth it.The restaurant's main entrance faces E Chapel Hill St. There's also a side entrance and separate bar room around the corner on Morris St. That's where we sat and waited. We had the option to eat at the bar, but we decided to wait for a table in the dining room for the experience and ambiance. It appeared online orders were picked up from a counter in the bar room. So, if you're picking up takeout, enter via Morris St.Like many businesses in this part of downtown Durham, Pizzeria Toro doesn't have dedicated parking. There's plenty of street, surface lot, and deck parking nearby. We parked for free in "Lot 32" at 111 W Chapel Hill St. The City enforces metered parking Monday-Friday, 8am-7pm. At the time of writing this review, parking rates are $2.50/hour for street and $2.25/hour for lot/deck.The restaurant isn't very big. Seating is communal. There's no outdoor seating. A showcase oven and pizza prep counter are the focal point of the the dining room (open kitchen). The atmosphere was bustling. The food menu was straightforward with 10 appetizer, soup, and salad options (priced at $11-16 each), 10 red pizzas ($15-21), six white pizzas ($18-21), and four cured ham options ($11-18 per ounce). Some local items were featured such as Chatham County Crispy Pig's Ears ($14) and Orange County Baby Lettuces ($11). The drink menu was extensive and had a decent variety of both alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages. The wine list had a solid assortment of wines from across Italy. Here's what three of us shared:Antipasti* Burrata ($15) - cherry tomato config, everything flatbread* Ricotta Dumplings ($16) - cipollini, NC sweet corn, Italian truffle* Person Co. Roasted Okra ($12) - tomato mayoPizza* Sweet Fennel Sausage, roasted peppers, provolone ($19) - red pizza* Spicy Calabrian Salumi, charred onions, fior di latte ($19) - red pizza* Cultivated and Foraged Mushrooms, garlic, fior di latte ($19) - white pizzaCocktails* Aperol Margarita ($13 each) x2 - Lunazul, Cointreau, aperol, lime, sea salt, rocks* Carousel ($12) - Campari, Barbera d'Alba, honey, lemon soda, rocks* Anguria Fresca ($13) - mezcal, watermelon, jalapeno, rocksWine* Sterparo, Aglianico, Basilicata (2022) ($11 glass) - orange and pink wine from Southern Italy (rosato / rose)Everything was delicious. My favorites were the Burrata and the Mushroom pizza. Everyone in our group liked the Mushroom pizza the best.If it's on the menu, burrata is one of my favorite things to order when dining out. Most restaurant burrata I've had has typically been good. In comparison, Pizzeria Toro's Burrata was above average. Not only was it really fresh, but it had an added layer of richness and complexity. The accompanying "everything flatbread," a la everything bagels, was excellent. It was full of flavor and incredibly tasty on its own.And that's something I noticed they do really well here: bread (dough / crust). The crust on all three of our pizzas was absolutely fantastic. This was the kind of crust that had ideal flavor and consistency (the right amount of springiness) where every single bite was scrumptious and you wanted to finish everything.I'm a fan of mushroom pizzas in general and Pizzeria Toro's Mushroom pizza was probably the best I've had in recent memory. It was packed with umami. I also love garlic and fior di latte, so no surprise this turned out to be my favorite pizza. Second-best to me was the Sweet Fennel Sausage pizza. Again, outstanding crust and just terrific all-around flavor. High-quality ingredients, well-balanced. I recommend it if you like sausage pizza. The Spicy Calabrian Salumi pizza was salty and savory. While yummy, I probably wouldn't order it again simply because there were so many other better-looking options on the menu. The other apps, the Ricotta Dumplings and the Roasted Okra, were very good. The Ricotta Dumplings were recommended to us by our server and it was a great recommendation, fairly unique and very satisfying. The Okra was local and a tasty side. The cocktails were well-made, strong, and refreshing. Also eye-appealing.We interacted with lots of staff, from the hostess to the bartenders to the food runners, and everyone / service was great. Francesca was our server and she was wonderful. I could tell this is a well-run operation."Toro" is Italian for bull. I think the business name is a nod to the City of Durham, nicknamed the "Bull City.""

The food was delivered quickly and we enjoyed our masala chai, kofta curry and chicken curry utapan. Portions were relatively generous and we boxed up the rest of our meals to take home. My one minor complaint was that our garlic naan did not taste very garlicky to me. Otherwise, another fine meal served quickly from a friendly staff."

The patio area has a really cute vibe with various types of tables and a bar. I'm one of those that looks up menus before I go to restaurants and I will say the menu had some slight differences in brunch offerings. I do wish that they offered more of a brunch selection but everything we had was good but simple, no frills but reasonably priced. A huge pile of thin sliced meat on to of a spinach salad tossed in a light vinaigrette dressing and mixed with roasted walnuts a bits of goat cheese. It was absolutely delicious and completely keto. Zay M. "I dined here on 2/18/24 for a date. We arrived here around 7:50pm for an 8pm reservation. They have complimentary valet and it was very busy. By the time we got inside, it was 8pm exactly. After checking in, we were told it would be a couple minutes. There were about 3-4 people behind the host stand. There were MANY people waiting to be seated, which I assume they were walk ins. There is only one bench for waiting which IS NOT enough for the amount of people waiting. From what I saw and other reviews, I think this business should invest in a proper waiting area. In the summer, waiting outside would be nice. However on a cold and windy night (like the night I visited), that would be miserable. We were sat less than a minute later. (Note: After reading reviews with poor experiences regarding reservations, I was nervous. Thankfully everything went smoothly). The ambiance was composed of low lighting, light music, and a candle on the table. The waiter, Dylan, came over shortly after we sat. He provided waters for us. Dylan returned shortly after. He graciously went over the menu for us. As he did that, someone brought over complimentary bread. The bread was soft and warm! We ordered spinach and artichoke dip as a start around 8:12pm. The dip came at 8:27pm and it was very hot (in temperature). The chips that accompanied it were crispy and tasty. We enjoyed it. We ordered our dinner at 8:29pm. We both got prime ribeye cooked medium and shared a loaded whipped potatoes side. (Note: All the sides are shareable). I also ordered a Thyme Lemon Drop that came 15 mins after ordering. Our food was brought over at 8:58pm. The prime ribeye was one of the best steaks I've ever tasted, no joke. I love the crisp edges. It was very juicy, tender, and flavorful! My mouth is watering right now as I reminisce on it! We enjoyed the loaded potatoes but we got full. We barely ate 1/3 of it. I forced myself to finish the steak because it was so delicious and didn't want to take it home and reheat it improperly. We were asked if we wanted dessert but we were honestly STUFFED! I definitely want to return. When/if I do, I will plan to save room for dessert. 2 steaks, 2 drinks, 1 appetizer, and 1 side was over $200. Keep that in mind when dining. I can say that we had a pleasant dining experience with no complaints. If I had to complain, I would say it took a while to receive our drinks. However, it was busy, so it was understandable. After dinner, I did go to the restroom. It was clean but busy. No complaints there. I was glad valet has slowed down by the time we finished dinner. The wait for my car was fairly short. However... I watched valet hop the curb in my car... ; So I would be cautious if you chose to utilize that service."

JJ D. "Atmosphere: Bull and Bean is a brunch spot in Durham with a laid-back and relaxed feel. A nice spot to meet up with friends for a casual meal! It wasn't too busy when we arrived, but it may get difficult to find seating during peak brunch hours. Service: We ordered to-go and our food came out relatively quickly. If you're dining in, you order at the counter, and food is brought to your table. Food: We ordered the Grits Bowl with Shrimp and the Cuban Sandwich. We were big fans of the Grits Bowl! It was just cheesy enough and had a great balance of vegetables in addition to the juicy shrimp. The Cuban Sandwich was filling, and the pickles and dijon mustard gave a nice tangy flavor. While the sandwich was a bit salty, it was a solid pick overall. Overall: With great meals both for dine-in and takeout, Bull and Bean is a solid spot for brunch in Durham. We're looking forward to coming back and trying their specials!"

Hi-Wire Brewing and Cugino Forno are literally next door to each other inside one of buildings formerly used by the Golden Belt Manufacturing Company. These building have a lot of history in the area. In the late 1800's, the Golden Belt Manufacturing Co. originated in a portion of the Bull Durham Tobacco Factory as an operation to produce the cloth bags in which the tobacco was sold. Now this area is a fully renovated Golden Belt Campus. We have been multiple times to their locations in Winston and Clemmons but did not realize there was a location in Durham. They serve a Neapolitan-style pizza which is very similar to what I have had Italy. Their dough is delicious with an array of high quality toppings. We decided to share a Supremo Italiano pizza because we know just how big they are. We told the young man working at the counter that we would be next door and he provided us with a number for our table at Hi-Wire. We should also mention that their prices are reasonable. The fried chicken, turkey and gravy, and salmon cakes were all delicious and definitely homemade. The sides were decidedly a mixed bag. Mash potatoes, sweet potato mash, and fried squash were delicious and homemade. The greenbean casserole and mac n cheese were straight from Stauffers and disappointing. The corn bread muffin was stellar. I didn't taste the hamburger, but enough left the kitchen to assemble a small cow so I can assume deliciousness. Lots of families and a few screaming babies, of course....The dining room tables reminded me a bit of NY style seating, where your neighbor is close and will want to watch the backup camera when pushing your chair away from the table. The dining room is all hard surfaces, so the sound just bounces around and fells like sitting in a cafeteria or food hall. When does a salad turn into soup? When you don't drain the lettuce long enough and the dressing loses its consistency, becoming a soupy mess. Even worse the croutons turn to mush, and I lose interest in finishing my Caesar salad. I am still on fence as to whether the Caesar dressing is house made, either way I think it could use less salt. The plan to skip the salad in the future to avoid further disappointment, seems like a good direction. The menu is impressive, good variety of Italian entrees. The pizza is definitely a contender for the pizza scene in Clayton, I enjoyed the slight sweet and tangy flavor within what I would consider a full-bodied sauce. Slap that sauce onto a light and fluffy dough, seared a bit at the bottom, topped with fresh mozzarella and were good.Unfortunately, the deserts are not house made, which is disappointing since I love my dessert, as a result I decided not to gamble on the Cannoli.
