The last 2 weeks in August I feel are a great time to check out eateries that have been on your mind but may be overly crowded the rest of the year.A sunny 84 degree Saturday in Chestnut Hill was the perfect backdrop for walking the cobblestone lined stretch of Germantown Avenue and checking out posh shops and great eateries like Tavern on the Hill.Shawn was behind the bar and greeted us warmly. There were only 2 other patrons in the establishment that were on their way out.The cool dimly lit interior was a welcomed contrast from the sunny summer day. We were escorted to our table by a nice gentleman (I'm sorry, I do not remember his name) who pointed out the specials on the board. One of those specials was the Southwestern Soup (pictured)...absolutely delightful! We also ordered a cheesesteak w/provolone (lol that person isn't from Philly), Buffalo wings and coconut shrimp. Everyone really njoyed their food. I would definitely recommend paying this quaint Tavern a visit.

I can't believe it took me so long to discover this place! My husband and I did some Christmas shopping in Chestnut Hill this past weekend and popped in here for an early, casual dinner. Loved the moody bar area on the way to the cozy dining room. The menu consisted of a few appetizers, a handful of salad options, and a lot of handhelds. I believe there was one entree special. The food was outstanding. The best wings I have ever had! For our entrees, I had the roast beef sandwich and my husband had the burger. Both were high-quality and delicious. Our waitress was very friendly and appropriately attentive. There was quite a crowd forming as we were leaving giving me the impression that this place is a popular staple in Chestnut Hill. Can't wait to go back!

New management? Maybe that is why things are much better. It seems the menu got a good update, and the fish special I had was fantastic. I'm glad this placed turned around from what it was. Still great people and great music, but now the food is much better... It's definitely back on the list.

An institution in Chestnut Hill. Quality fare and a pleasant staff. However, if you're looking for light and airy, this is not going to be your jam. Bar is upbeat, but the entire place is very old school - dark and moody. Hours are little limited. But their French onion soup is a destination dish.

We enjoyed our lunch here today! We did have to wait about 20 minutes after we were seated to have any server come to our table so I took away a star. Out of the 7 people at our table, 4 got the turkey sandwich, two got the roast beef, and one got the BLT. The sweet potato fries were a bit over-done, but otherwise everyone thought the food was great. We loved the atmosphere of the restaurant and would definitely return.

Cozy, dark little restaurant with a small bar area and good comfort food. Good sandwiches but will also have more elaborate entrees.

A wonderful 5-star lunch experience ! Coming back from a mid-day center city concert, decided to stop in @ Tavern On the Hill rather than MacNally's...SO glad we did ! Bartender Mackenzie couldn't have been better : super-efficient AND super-personable ! I've had many excellent meals here before, lunch and dinners, today was no exception. Straying from our regular menu favorites ( tough to pass on the always great burger or turkey'n' brie sandwich),we both had the same "special"...a smoked kielbasa/ kraut sandwich. Not an item I'd usually rave over, it was just perfect...the best I've ever had. Great kielbasa, nicely toasted roll, homemade-tasting kraut...and even a high-quality tasty brown mustard. You just won't go wrong here... where else would somebody rave about a kielbasa sandwich ???Can't wait to return for lunch OR dinner...

This has been our go to place for years. We probably dine there 3-4 times a year. We love their wings. Good wine selection for us!Wonderful tavern vibe - only 20 tables or so. The bar is fun to sit at - friendly crowd. Not overwhelming - just right!Recommend if you are looking for a place to go solo, as well!
