Before we came to Philadelphia, I did my research for the best cheesesteaks and which places were highly recommended. I had heard several locals who stated to stay away from the popular 2, such as Genos, and I can't recall the other. I also had read that any place in Philly has great cheesesteaks. I wanted to try one that is supposed to be at a pizza place, but it appeared to be closed, not sure for the holiday or for good. I found Campos during our second day in Philly while walking down Market. Tried to ask the police officers that were across the street, and although they hadn't been to Campos, they informed me that it's constantly busy. We figured we would give it a try, and I also had read good reviews that convinced me. I am extremely pleased with our decision. This has been a Philly staple since 1947. It is right in Old City, and the building is a bit old and small, back when the crowds coming in for a cheesesteak could be better balanced. The tiny restaurant now has an elbow to elbow dining and some tables out front. We tried to sit inside, but either their A/C broke or they didn't have one. During a 91-degree hot dog day, my husband felt that an outside table would be best because at least there was fresh air circulating. The only problem was that the table we were fortunate enough to get was right near the outside menu, displayed right above my head near the entry. As a note to all, please be aware if there's a menu near an outdoor table where someone is eating and practice consideration. This restaurant has menus inside as well. This wasn't our first choice for a Fourth of July feast, but for lunch, after visiting the hall where our Independence was declared, I would say that this hit our bellies quite well. It was delicious and, in fact, the best cheesesteak we've ever had. I normally add horseradish sauce to my cheesesteak, but this was good as it was served with mushrooms, onions, peppers, and aged provolone. The cheery on top was the side of potato salad that I ordered for my husband and I to share. He had to hold down the only table that was available in the restaurant while I waited in a long line. The lady at the counter told me that her mother-in-law made the potato salad fresh daily and did it ever taste O' so fresh. Exquisite potato salad for the 4th. The best I've had on the 4th in a long time. That mother-in-law has a good daughter-in-law who really delivers assurance that the potato salad is fresh and tasty. I took pictures of our sandwich and potato salad, and I can't tell you what was inside the potato salad because we ate it quickly. If this tells you anything. Campos cheesesteaks may be a good enough reason to drive to Philly, to be honest.

So this place is recommended by the locals. They tell us to stay away from the famous two cheesesteak places (one in the Rocky movie). This is a local family owned and operated small business that has been around in "Old Town" Philadelphia. The service is personal and the cashier asked if we wanted to add a side of macaroni salad or coleslaw made fresh by "my mom". Sold us as we live supporting family owned and operated small businesses. Cashier asked," Will you be paying with cash or card? Cash is cheaper." So bring your cash and save a little money! There was a decent amount of meat in our sandwich and the meat was moist so presumably freshly cooked! Surprisingly, the cheese whiz was delicious on the cheesesteak!

I've been trying to hit up Campo's since my later days in Philly. Finally got around to trying one of the city's oldest cheesesteaks. And it was bomb. Really enjoyed this one and was not disappointed. The bread was better than most, and despite it being a bit too cheesy, it was sliced to perfection. Super friendly staff, they'll push you to buy momma's homemade coleslaw and mashed potatoes, but thats Philly for you. I also appreciated how they had a bathroom. Can be a rarity with these cheesesteak spots!Just how I wanted to spend a cold Philly day back in the city.

A tour guide recommended Campos because he likes the family that runs it, and they were apparently all behind the counter when we went. We also noticed that of the cheesesteak places in the area, this was by far the busiest. I had a cheesesteak wiz wit'. I can't say I cared for it. The bread was great, the steak didn't seem to have any fat or gristle, but it didn't have much flavor to me. My wife had a cheeseburger she also didn't care for. I really think it was just us, every one else seemed to be really chowing down.

07.10.24 my wife took our friends from Germany to Philadelphia to see the sights. And the talk of 'cheesesteaks' being a Philly staple came up and they wanted to try one. So my wife took them to Campos. And it was a big hit. They loved them. AND my wife brought me one home too. And though it had cooled off during the two hour car ride, it still taste and smelled delicious. So thank you for exciting our guests and fantastic food.

They're good. They're not great. For $14, I want great. And I can get great a block away. It was the beef flavor for me. It's decent but it's not anything that will make me drive into the city just for them. A cheesesteak either has that it factor or it doesn't. I'm a cheesesteak snob so your opinion may differ. In fact I keep a personal top 10 list of my city favorites. 1. Angelo's2. John's 3. Cafe Carmela4. Woodrow's 5. Oh Brother6. Dalessandro's 7. Philip's8. Max's9. Gooey Louie's10. Joe'sCall Campo's an honorable mention.

So I took a little shit from locals for not expanding my cheesesteak journey...here we go!Definitely was a different vibe than Pat's but one that was very very cool. Sandwich was delicious and homemade sides (shout out to mom!) were amazing. Large patio, quick service and hospitable staff. Bread was super tasty, meat was flavorful and tender, peppers and onions could use some work but still way yummy. Highly recommend.

Great restaurant! This place is just a few blocks away from the historic center in Philadelphia and we found it as we were walking by and decided to try it out. The staff was friendly, helpful, and patient with us as we decided on what to order. Once we finished ordering we took a seat and it was then that I was able to see how beautifully decorated and clean the restaurant was. When the food arrived we all took a bite of our sandwiches and WOW! The meat was fresh and hot and absolutely tasty! We devoured our cheesesteaks in silence for the next few minutes. Lol! Highly recommend coming here for your Philly Cheesesteak experience.
