Gerald S. "Guru Indian Cuisine on Sycamore Street in the heart of beautiful downtown Newtown may have just changed hands, but the kitchen is still headed in the right direction. Unchanged menu and primarily vegetarian oriented with a reasonable concession to the meat eaters in the community, it continues to ably create delicious and colorful dishes to soothe the savage beast. We dropped in for a Labor Day repast and found the house moderately full, but with the perfect table in the large window facing Sycamore. Service was provided by a young man who knew his curries and efficiently provided all the assistance needed. We opened with draft Rupee Lager which arrived in glasses accentuating its rich amber color. Definitely a mid-market mild beer for the madding crowd. From there we ordered Avocado Chaat and Veggie Samosas as appetizers. The chaat looked like tiny armadillos that had to be handled delicately as they were in a round thin shell that cracked easily upon first bite, allowing their delicate semisweet inner secret to spill out onto hands and plate. A first for me, and I really liked it. The Samosas were freshly deep fried and full of mashed tatoes and green peas. The tamarind dipping sauce was excellent. Our mains were Chicken Korma (spicy), Kashmiri Chicken (moderate heat) and Vegetable Manchurian from the Indo-Chinese menu. Loved all the sauces and fresh chicken, while the Manchu was not as crisp as advertised, but still enjoyable. We ordered enough to bring home a bit of everything for the working members of our fam, and they really devoured the "leftovers" when they got home last night. Word on the street is that a second Indian house is opening soon up the block. Wonder what the extra competition will do for quality and prices? Gotta think only good things can happen."

Cherie C. "Ordered delivery after a rough, late day at work. Wanted comfort food. Karma delivered beyond my expectations. Got a "bread basket," which arrived warm, fresh from the oven. There were a few types of bread and more than we could eat with one meal. We ate it for days. We shared dal tadka, a hearty lentil dish that was spicy and rich in flavor, and grilled vegetables from the tandoor. The vegetables were also roasted perfectly and were full of flavor. Leftovers made for some delicious lunches. My husband talked about that meal for days to anyone who would listen. I'm sure we'll be ordering again soon."

I noticed On some nights for dinner buffet they don't have samosas but everything else is available. I don't know what they did to the chickpea recipe, but it's so much better than I remembered. I also love that they have drink specials everyday ranging from $4 glasses of wine to $7 mixed drinks. I love me some dry wine with the spicy food that's for sure..I'm getting old these days and I can only handle about two plates at the buffet LOL My summer goal is to definitely do an unofficial Yelp. We were a group of 18 people and I think we overwhelmed them slightly, but the food was delicious and they went out of their way to make sure that we were happy. We were celebrating the lives of two departed friends who had enjoyed this restaurant. Our group brought wine and everyone ordered something different. I couldn't keep up with it all, but I had a delicious lamb korma. It was creamy and flavorful. Other people at the table ordered various dishes, including some tandoori items, a couple of vegetarian dishes and lots of different chicken dishes. They brought us samosas as a complimentary appetizer and we passed everything around. Everything was on point , we all enjoyed the various dishes. The place isn't huge and they were doing takeout as well as serving people who were in house. I think that they have a loyal following.I would definitely return there again if I were in Philadelphia."

Will 100% be ordering again and can't wait. This place is the real deal for quick and flavorful Indian food. Will say that many reviews have issues with calling in and ordering. We had to ask several times how to order on the phone because it's tricky. We were annoyed with this & said to ourselves "Omg, take our order!" Aye. But! once the food started coming out, nothing else mattered! It's BYOB, which is great. Drinking wine while we tried to figure out how order probably helped. Lol. Not a bad bite was had, the food covered northern & southern India & had an Indo-Chinese menu. We had appam with goat curry, the eggplant & dal entrees, chicken tikka, a weekend special appetizer- fried dal balls, garlic naan & an onion bread. Everything was absolutely delicious, food was well-priced. Beautiful decor, yet casual enough for kids. Will be my go-to Indian restaurant."

Dave D. "Superb excellence from start to finish! We arrived on a night when apparently dining in was not the choice of those who enjoy this unique restaurant's food. It was clear people enjoy the food based on the steady stream of take out orders. But, who is to complain when you get to have a restaurant's dining room all to yourselves? And, we were treated with just the right amount of attentiveness that one would expect from a restaurant where you have the help to yourselves. The choice of Indian or Thai I have to admit is unique and I wasn't sure which nation's cuisine would be chosen for the evening but it was a journey only to India so the Thai Bistro food options will be left for another evening. This restaurant is a BYOB, which is always a bonus when you head out for dinner. The appetizer choices of Samosa's and Chicken Pakora were absolutely the perfect starters. The lightness of the Samosa and its blend of flavors may have given me the best Samosa of my life! The Pakora also had the lightness and taste that caused them to vanish from the plate in the perfect mint and tamarind chutney's.Chicken Korma done to perfection and hooking my friend who was hesitant about Indian cuisine. My Lamb Vindaloo was so so good with its spices encouraging me to eat more. The plentiful basmati rice balanced out the meal! The bonus (Not sure if it is always available.) just by checking in on YELP we saved 15% ... of course with service like we received that money just increased the tip!Wish I lived a little closer because I'd be a regular!!"

I was pretty annoyed, but at least I knew they were making my food fresh. I ordered the saag paneer and a plain naan. I am not sure why they call this saag paneer since it's not even saag (mustard leaves) but it was palak (spinach). Anyways, it came with rice. The rice was a little bit clumped together but it had a nice flavor with the cumin seeds in it. The naan was good but I wish it were a bit more fluffy. Steve S. "I had been a long time regular here under the previous ownership. Admittedly I hadn't been back in years. Mostly the pandemic took me away from here and I just hadn't returned. Plus hearing some people say the food had become inconsistent made me hesitate. But reading up on it today and learning about the new owner, it was time to see if they could win me back. They have. Compared to what I used to get here on the buffet, the tandoori chicken now seems to have more flavor. More of it is definitely hotter spice, but I did notice a fruity tang as well. I'm not complaining. I used to eat the tandoori chicken here regularly and I consider this upgraded. The vegetable pakora stood out. That dish definitely improved. It had a great crispiness and robust seasoning without being too overpowering. That got a second helping. I used to eat the pakora here all the time and I'd pick this over what I used to get. The paneer makhani tasted more like a korma sauce to me. It was more cream-based than tomato. I'm good with that because I love korma. You may judge accordingly. The chicken tikka masala was a little more basic to me. But it's a basic dish in general. Nothing really wrong with it, but it wouldn't be memorable to experienced Indian food lovers. The mango lassi used to be a little thin and more sweet than fruity. Now it's thicker and more of a mango taste. Upgrade. I also used to love the kheer here. Somehow I think I love it more now. Another upgrade. My taste for Indian has evolved over the years. I've just eaten it a lot and I've tried a lot more local places. There are places that are serving more authentic food out there. This is still slightly tailored to more novice eaters I believe. It always was in my mind. But that's not a bad thing. They're back in my Indian rotation."

Gwynedd D. "Another friend wanted to try Curry & Cocktails. We had more appetizers this time; an Indo-Chinese fried cauliflower in a spicy red sweet sauce (recommended!) and samosas. I thought the chatnis that go with the samosa could be more flavorful (they do lose punch over time) but that cauliflower, I'd go back for just that. It's kind of chewy, a bit like "General Tso's Chicken" but with cauliflower. Lots of flavor. We ordered extra mild because one of us can't eat ANY spicy food any more and had a yellow lentil soup (dal), butter chicken and saag paneer. Extra mild WAS extra mild, too mild for me in fact. I like some warmth even though my own doctor says "no to spicy foods". If you are customizing your heat, somewhere between medium (which is spicy but tolerable) and mild would give you some flavor. As it was, the saag paneer was not flavorful enough (it's bland due to being essentially creamed or buttered puree of spinach with homemade fresh cheese cubes) and the butter chicken could have used some spice for me. My dining buddy was very pleased with the soup and the chicken as he could not have spice. The moral of the story is; if you have people with you who can't tolerate spices, the kitchen can easily accommodate them. I found out I really do need a level of some spiciness even though I can't eat "hot!" anymore. The bar is in a semi-enclosed area with nice lighting so if you are going just for exotic cocktails, you can sip some kind of fruity boozy something in a pleasant space. We didn't get the drink menu but they have a separate list of beverages. The restaurant can accommodate larger parties at tables; we were"

However, the kitchen was plenty busy with the amount of takeout they needed to make.Service was prompt and one of the co-owners even stopped by a few times to check on us, which we appreciated. We ordered lamb rogan josh, chicken curry, garlic & plain naan, and shrimp tandoori. I was really happy to have a glass of mango lassi nearby, especially when the capsaicin started kicking in. Everything came out steaming hot! And the spicy level was well balanced. We love spicy foods, but can't consume super spicy levels anymore for health reasons. I'm glad the server asked what spice level we wanted, and that we went with the mid-level spice. The only thing I'd do differently next time is to request less salt be used in our dishes. There was plenty of food left over to take home with us. They were made of cauliflower, onion, potato, and spinach. They were perfectly crispy with tasty seasoning over them. For our main dishes, we ordered the butter chicken and the chicken dhaniwal korma. All we could say was WOW. The full bodied flavor, freshness, and quality was unmatched! It was my first time trying chicken dhaniwal korma and it was fantastic! The cilantro really gives the dish a beautiful savory flavor.
