The food is ok and fresh. Seasoned lightly. Gravy on smothered meats is really good. I was stopping by every week. Then, I had several experiences with the very tall, older gentleman with horrible customer service. If you want a smaller portion or no gravy he huffs and snaps at you that it comes that way. If I am paying I want what I want. Why pay for a loaded plate for a child and the food gets wasted? I will pass on this kind of customer service.

One thing I like about being a driver at work when they do send me on the road is being able to look for new BBQ spots while out and about. As big as this city is you can find a spot just about anywhere you go, and today I found a spot right off 9230 Jensen Dr called Colwell's BBQ Soul Food and More. I think it was the soul food that got me because I do love me some good Ox-tails and southern cooking but today I came for the BBQ. The place is nothing fancy more like a hole in the wall but walking in I was greeted right away by the staff. Everything on the hot plates looked so good and so fresh but I asked them if I could get some good BBQ here and the old man replied "You come to the right place," I get asked a lot what is the difference from craft BBQ and normal BBQ and my answer is easy NOTHING!, you see the way I can explain it is you have the big beer companies Budweiser, Miller, Coors they been making beer the same way for many many years nothing changes but then you got a few yuppies that want to start a Micro Brewery and they call it craft beer. they add this and that to give it a different taste but in the long run its all made the same way you still have to smoke the meat in a pit for just the same amount of time you give the Restaraunt and nice new location and charge high dollar for food but you can still get the same from a hole in the wall and pay less. Technic is also a big part everyone has their own ways of doing things Prep, Seasoning and different woods used to smoke to give different flavors to the meat. In this age where every BBQ joint is trying to be better then one another I like to go places that been around for a long time cause that tells me they are doing something right. Well I ordered the 3 meat special that came with Brisket, Ribs, and Sausage and it came with 3 sides I went for the Okra, Beans, and Mac and Cheese and the lady was kind enough to give me some freshly baked corn bread instead of the regular loaf bread most places give. Up first was the Brisket and I can say it was just a bit over cooked but the taste was good smoke and salt and pepper taste was there and it reminded me of backyard BBQ, Up next was the Ribs and they were very good nothing special just smoked to taste and fall off the bone good. The sausage was last and it was pretty damn good not that package sausage you find at the store and the casing was good with the perfect snap... All in all, this was just some home style southern BBQ the kind you make in a big barrel pit on a Sunday afternoon after church and if you ask me it was done pretty damn good and the sides well that was another story these were by far some of the best sides I had and everything was made from scratch and by I'm sure the old ladies they had working in the place. The Okra was really really good and the Mac and Cheese were creamy with the beans having great flavor. I really enjoyed stopping in this place and the next time I go it will be for the Ox-tails.... The price was good my meal costing only $13.50 and they also have Meats by the lb Pricing is as follows Ribs $13.99 lb, Sausage $12.90 lb, Brisket $12.99 lb, and their Menu is a good one with many great Soul foods for the taste buds of yours. Well, this is Smokin Willy T saying before you get sucked into theses places that are calling themselves craft BBQ remember its all the same if you ask me and sometimes I will always go to a hole in the wall before I go into a big flashy place.

Mmm mmm good! I found out about Colwell's after a friend had some of their bbq and catfish at a party. He insisted that we check them out at the source, so we headed up 59 to Colwell's. Located in a strip center, we were greeted warmly when we walked in. I got a one meat platter and my friend got the two meat platter, both of which came with three sides. The brisket was juicy and tender, the catfish flaky and delicious, and the sausage was divine! And the bbq sauce pulled everything together with it's sweet tangy goodness. My friend was even dipping his catfish into it! Talking to the owners, we found out that it was a family business, with sisters making the sides and bakery goods, brother handling the bbq, and sons and daughters lending a hand. Since we'd each gotten a platter, they threw in two chopped beef sandwiches to go! We're coming back soon to check out their soul food, which was sold out by the time we got there.(And photogs will like it's location - right across the street is the cool historic Granada theater.)

The BBQ brisket was delicious! The sides were pretty basic, but tasty. If home cooking is what you're looking for, this is it - you won't find much better. It could've been an off-day, but the service was pretty gruff and leaning towards the unfriendly side. I did not feel welcomed at all and took my food to-go, which is how they packaged it anyway; it really didn't seem like they wanted me to stay and eat there, even with several open tables. The decor was nonexistent and there weren't any high chairs for my baby, anyway. So, I took my food to go and enjoyed it, but I would've preferred to eat there. I just wish they had some high chairs and that I hadn't felt so uncomfortable. First time I've ever felt that way in a restaurant, even a bare bones one like this.

I love this place! Fantastic food and amazing customer service. I've never had a bad meal here and the portions are huge! If you are looking for authentic Soul Food this place is the real deal. Had the BBQ this trip and it was great and reasonably priced. Worth a trip from wherever you are.

I was so excited to go here with my girls ... and sadly it was disappointing. We ordered some ox tails with rice and greens and rice had no flavor and ox tail made me sick it was not clean well you could tell, I sadly wanted to give it a chance :( my daughters had the meatloaf and rice and beans and omg I had them in and out the bathroom I tasted it and it tasted watery as if it was frozen ! That's just not right ! The restaurant needs to rename their restaurant to frozen food reheated ! Sorry not sorry . Watch what you serve people my kids were sick for five days ! Not OK !

We had a great experience here with the ownership and enjoyed everything we ordered. Upon walking in a gentleman greeted us, who, based on his excitement and passion I have to assume was the owner. He was proud of what he was serving and rightfully so. We ordered a two meat plate, ribs and sausage, and a baked chicken plate. Sides ordered were corn, green beans, rice with gravy, and yams. Everything was great and we got two meals/servings from each plate making the price per *serving* appx. $6.75 after tax, a great value.I appreciated the friendly staff, value, and great tasting food. Unfortunately I don't live in the area but this is convenient to Bush Intercontinental Airport and will be a stop on future trips if open while I'm nearby.
