Had lunch here on a Thursday afternoon. Came for the chocolate chip cookies that were recommended to me, but the breakfast menu items were too tempting to resist, so I ended up having a meal here, then taking some cookies to go.Loved the casual feel inside the restaurant. You order at the front counter and take a number to your table, then they bring it out to you. I stood in line to order for about 3-5 minutes, with just a few customers in front of me, and the wait for my food was about 10 minutes or so, however the cookies were served instantly as they had these ready at the counter. Got the french toast combo (2 slices french toast, with eggs and sausage), 3 of the fresh baked chocolate chip cookies, and a chocolate dipped peanut butter cookie. Everything was yummy, savory perfectly cooked sausage, plain scrambled eggs as requested, fluffy french toast slices that tasted like sourdough and were just uniquely delicious. The two slices were large and filling, and it came with a cup of butter on the side, plus they had sugar free syrup which is a big plus for me. The famous chocolate chip cookies have the sweet taste of raw cookie dough if you like that (though it's not actually raw, it's definitely cooked)... a tad too sweet for me but still good. The chocolate dipped peanut butter cookie was more to my liking, tasty and chocolatey without the feeling of sugar overload. All of the staff here were very friendly and welcoming. And parking wasn't difficult to find in the parking lot out front shared amongst the businesses in the plaza. I'm glad to have discovered this spot, and with such an extensive menu, I'll definitely be back to try more.

Albeit very expensive, the pastrami sandwich had a generous amount of lean meat. The German chocolate cake was very dry and dropped a star off the rating. Service was very good Ambiance was what I expected for a lunch crowd

I love old school joints that have history in San Jose, over the decades most have disappeared. Gunther's has been around forever, but their hours are kinda odd, so, it's been difficult to drop by.I finally was in the neighborhood when they were actually open! Many places have Rueben Sandwiches but few are that NY style, piled high with meat, sauerkraut and thousand island on rye. I was so happy! The staff seem to be the same and the sandwich was decent but. Here is the deal, a sandwich, potato salad and a soda was over $34!!!! This may be the highest price lunch in town! Here is the deal for that kind of money it needs to rank as "the best", that's way, way too much for a decent sandwich OK potato salad and a mediocre Ginger Ale. The only thing epic about this meal was the price.

I have wanted to try this place for years since I live close by. I finally DoorDashed it bc I was sick and love split pea soup. I also got the potato knish, 4 bean salad and the chocolate chip cookie. The cookie was delicious. The beans were okay just for a side and it's healthy. Other than that I probably ordered the wrong thing. No flavor for the soup or the knish. Not sure what I was expecting but I spent too much for a meal I didn't really eat.

Had to make a stop at Gunther's today. The food taste home made and fresh. The waiters and waitres were great. Very helpful and knowledgeable on the food and menus. I had to try the beef stew in a cup and a tri tip sandwich on a fresh sour dough bread. It was delish. Took me to NOM NOM city. The place is not too big. Kind of medium size inside and cozy, on a busy location in mid San Jose. Meridian and Hamilton. The deserts OMG is a whole different splendid experience. Look at the menu's they have and I took one picture of the cakes and cookies they show in a glass cabinet when you enter the facility. I totally love the German theme this place has of the food and decorations in the restaurant. If you want to try something different in your food restaurant. Stop by Gunther's you will be satisfied. I guarantee it.

I ordered Gunther's for lunch via DoorDash two days in a row and it was excellent both days. The first day I had a Reuben on marble rye with thousand island. Delicious. I also had matzo ball soup, which was quite tasty, and two chocolate chip cookies. I had read that the cookies were not to be missed , and it was true. They're like incredibly soft biscuits, very sweet and thick and buttery. Yum. On the second day I ordered a bagel and lox. It was the best I've had in a long time. The bagel was toasted and wrapped in foil, so it was still hot. The cream cheese, lox, tomatoes, and lettuce came in a clamshell container, so you put it all together yourself. I was happy they included lots of onions because other places usually don't provide enough. It was also nice to be able to choose no capers from the menu-- I'm always picking them off my bagel. The lettuce wasn't what I was expecting, so I didn't eat it. I have plenty of lox and cream cheese left over for another bagel. The menu offers options for what to include and what not to include, which I really appreciate. I wish more restaurants on DoorDash would do that.

The atmosphere is amazing!! The employees knew a lot of the customers by name. They are beyond welcoming. Everyone was in conversation or reading. Not a single person on their phone. This was a Thursday at noon. Limited tables to sit at. The menu is beyond overwhelming. I sat down and was told twice how to order. You can sit down, but go to the counter to order. All of the food at the counter looks amazing! There was a nice gentleman with glasses that did a the a table of newbies. Matzo Ball soup - this is why I came here in the first place. A bit underwhelmed by this. Not a lot of flavor, but great size of the ball. I only ate half after the sandwich was delivered. Pastrami Philly - A very hard time to choose what I wanted to have as a sandwich. I don't know the difference between all of the meat. I choose this for the veggies and cheese. I like lean meat and this was great. This is a TURN OVER sandwich. When you get it, turn it over so the bottom doesn't get soggy. I also had to eat it upside down so I could get it in my mouth. It was very good, but I wish I could get a half size. Chocolate chip cookies - I had two bites and WOW! I ordered 2 to go. I haven't finished one, but amazing! Special of soup and sandwich would be amazing! I will return, but make sure to bring someone to share a meal with.

Being someone who loves baked goods, I had to try the famous chocolate chip cookies. I also got a slice of carrot cake because that's my favorite type of cake. Both desserts were okay. The cookies were good, but something was missing from them. They tasted like the cookie dough pieces you find in ice cream - very grainy, still yummy, but not a lot of flavor to them. They didn't leave me dying to come back, not like Choc Cookies in Santa Clara. Those still reign supreme in terms of chocolate chip cookies, in my opinion. The carrot cake was alright. I was shocked at the price - almost $10. They ship it from New York and you can taste that it's been shipped (ie. not baked fresh). It was a little dry and could do with less raisins. It certainly wasn't a bad cake but I won't be coming back for it.Service: If you're here for dessert then you get helped pretty quickly. Workers behind the counter are really friendly. Came here Friday after lunch and could see how it could get cramped on a weekend though.

I love this place! My husband brought home chocolate chip cookies that were brought to a work event, and I HAD to know where they came from - best cookies in San Jose. I also love the classic food here: mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, roast beef sandwiches. They do not skimp on the portions.
