Debra R. "The menu was very large for a bar pub. I walked in and was immediately drawn to the lack of sports on one TV. They had Fox "News" on. I really wanted to walk out but figured I would sit where ai couldn't see it. I had checked out the menu and was looking forward to supporting a local restaurant for lunch as I often try to. I can not for the life of me know why people watch propaganda and for a restaurant to be contributing to lack of truth is beyond me. I'd like to go to a restaurant and not have bad politics hitting me in the face. With that said, my hamburger was not good. It was so wet the bun was all soggy. The sweet potato fries were awesome. My husband had Chili with grilled cheese. He wasn't fond of either. There was too much corn in the Chili and Grilled Cheese was just average.I told management about my uncomfortablenesses with the TV. I did expect it to be changed. When we left, it was still on. This shows me that they are not responsive to customers and the reason for 2 stars. I would have given them 3 or 4 if not for the TV. I also would have sent back my burger or at least told them about it. I didn't bother figuring they didn't care anyway."

Rebecca M. "The Mac House is a hidden gem tucked away in a shopping center in North Raleigh. It is family owned with great customer service and they remember me and what I typically order. I tend to order the same things but do change it up once in a while. As every month, there are special mac n cheese; grilled cheese; salad; soup and cheesecake. The restaurant is casual so you can relax. They have indoor and outdoor seating or you can do carry out. You order at the counter and your meal will be brought to your table. The Mac House isn't your typical grilled cheese or mac n cheese as many variations are offered from pizza to cheeseburger to bacon & truffle to jerk chicken to spinach and artichoke mac n cheese. For grilled cheeses you can get buffalo chicken to pimento with bacon and fried green tomatoes to bbq to caprese pesto. I tend to get the Mac House grilled cheese with garlic seasoned bread or the mac n cheese grilled cheese and it is just like it sounds with mac n cheese inside the grilled cheese. Both are so good. With the mac n cheese I like the seafood one with shrimp. As much as I love the grilled cheese sandwiches and mac n cheese. The salads are my favorite as they are so fresh. So I like that the grilled cheese sandwiches come with a side so I can get the salad with it. Then the mac n cheese grilled cheese gives me the mac n cheese too so I can have it all in one meal.Don't forget to try the cookies when you stop by for some yummy food."

They have a nice spacious patio area for dining so we decided to try eating outdoors. Service was prompt upon arrival. Our waiter suggested the birria tacos. He shared that the pub prides itself on " authentic flavorful tacos". My friend had grilled wings, pimento cheese balls and a salad. I had the fried green tomatoes, birria tacos by recommendation and a whiskey sour. Service was very slow outside. Our waiter had our food served to us but never came back to check on us until it was time to check out. I understand it's late night and staffing is limited. The food was very good with the exception of the fried green tomatoes. The tomatoes were under ripe and too hard to serve for this recipe. The pimento cheese balls were excellent. Two of my favorite North Carolina southern classics. The convenience of late night hours until 2am, and location is unmatched for this area and the food was good. I would definitely return."

The diner has two floors but we asked to stay on the first level as I wasn't sure if there was all the nostalgic decor upstairs.I love that the building was restored to how it would have looked in the 40s with the mahogany wood; tin ceiling; marble counter; bar stools and tile floor. The details are stunning. The place is busy and has a large food menu as well as ice cream menu. The menu has a lot of sandwiches to select from. I went with the tuna melt on sunflower bread with provolone cheese. The sandwich came with chips but I went with steak fries instead. The sandwich was good but I think I'd go with something else next time after looking at what others were ordering.Service was very friendly and attentive."

We sat ourselves and chose a booth; nothing else to choose from really so if you're a big party, be prepared to be separated. We didn't care though, we were so hungry all five of us shoved ourselves into a booth. Our waitress was super friendly and helped us go over the menu, this was our first time dining here and we are all still a little bit new to authentic Southern cuisine. Our kids were pleased with grilled cheese, chicken tenders and french fries. I chose the special of the day which was chicken and dumplings; it came with two sides and I chose onion rings and macaroni & cheese. The hush puppies were delicious. I really enjoyed my meal, all of us at the table enjoyed picking at the onion rings and I thought the mac & cheese was very tasty. I would absolutely come back to Hops, I would get the chicken & dumplings again for sure and I definitely want to try breakfast. Thank you!"

This place bills itself as having the best wings in the triangle. I have to disagree, after spending an evening on the toilet. It could have been one or two that were underdone, but if you decide to try them, look closely as you eat them. They have a small bar area, so it can be a bit packed in that area depending on the night. It was a small space in my opinion, but it was welcoming. I prefer a smaller eatery, than large. Crab Cake Sandwich: Whenever I see crab cakes on the menu, I play the guessing game. To cut back on the cost, some places will use more bread crumbs and less crab. Ordering crab cakes is like the box of chocolates Forest Gump told us about; you never know what you're going to get. I gave Angela, our waitress, three options and asked what she suggested. Number one, the crab cake! The crab cake was full of crab and was seasoned very well, I was a happy camper. It is something I'd get over and over, but that's after I try some of the other things on their menu. How do you review a side salad? Well, I can say, I LOVED the fact they piled on the purple onions, I can't eat enough of those. For me, the Mojito fell flat and I don't think I'd get it again. After 25 minutes, I went to check on the food and the entrance way was crowded with no employee in sight. After another almost 10 minutes waiting, the counter person finally showed up with my food. I should have known better since I order here pretty regularly when I'm downtown, but I highly recommend not bothering with them delivering it and just going to pick it up.Now on to the food... the baked ziti came with a side salad and a ton of bread. I don't think we waited 5 minutes. We sat at the bar. I enjoyed that. You can get a great view of the restaurant. The place has a good vibe. I like the interior decor and I also like they have outdoor tables. Our waitress who was working behind the bar was busy. She was working! Watching her maneuver around the place was something to watch. She apologized for some of the wait in between her service, but you couldn't be annoyed because she was getting the job done! The freshly squeezed orange juice is delicious. The coffee is fresh. Every time I go out for breakfast I have the notion to try something new, but I always get the go to breakfast platter. The platter comes with a ton of food and it was soooooooo good. Eggs, 3 meats, grits or potatoes and toast or pancakes. The sausage had a great texture and fresh taste. The eggs were cooked just like I like them. The ham wasn't too salty...perfect! The bacon was delish. Ok...drum roll...my favorite thing I've had in a while...the cheesy grits! Perfection! Yum! My only complaint is that it didn't come in super large bowl lol It was apparent that my daughter loved her French toast because before I could finish putting butter on my toast, I looked over at her plate...gone. I had a puzzled look on my face because I thought it dropped or someone took her food. I asked her where is your food? Gone. I don't even think I got a good look at it. They have a very open space, nicely done with a hint of European flavor. There is a spacious bar front and center as well with plenty of TVs to follow sports action/programs. I was seated upon entering and given the menu. Again, the menu gives an Eastern European impression with some American favorites as well. I chose to start with Potato & Cheese Pierogi with menu description "traditional eastern European fried dumplings, stuffed with cheese, boiled potatoes, butter and seasoning, served with caramelized onions." I liked these a lot, a definite crisp along the edges and tasty ingredients inside. They do appear a bit greasy/oily when they come out but taste very good. For my main choice, I went with their Chicken Schnitzel, menu described as "pickled marinated & panko crusted. Served with mushroom Marsala sauce and mashed potatoes." Again, I liked this one, the flavors were great together and the mushroom sauce made a nice addition. Service was good during my visit and I was checked on several times during my meal. Daniel B. "We enjoyed our time at The Blue Note Grill in downtown Durham. I think the food is three stars (okay), but the live music, laid-back atmosphere, and friendliness of both the staff and the patrons bumps this business up to four stars (good) for me. Barbecue, ribs, and music succinctly sums this place up.We ended up here because we were looking for a barbecue restaurant in Durham that was open for dinner on a Wednesday night after 8:00pm. There weren't many options. We didn't know about the live music aspect of The Blue Note Grill until we arrived. This place is popular. We showed up and checked in around 6:45pm. They don't take reservations. We were told the wait would be about 30 minutes and I was given a pager. The estimated wait time was pretty much spot-on as we were seated around 7:15pm.On a Wednesday night, we were told the main indoor dining room and bar - the one with the stage and live music - was full. If we wanted to sit in there, there would be a $5 cover charge per person. Our other options were the fully-enclosed patio and the open-air patio. I asked if I could see all three options before making a decision and one of the staff obliged.I ended up choosing the open-air patio for our small group of three because: (1) We wanted to catch up and the music was too loud inside. Sitting inside is for those who primarily want to enjoy the music. (2) The enclosed patio was actually warmer and stuffier than the open-air patio. We ended up liking the open-air patio, even though we had to deal with flies and mosquito bites, because we could hear each other easily and still enjoy the live music coming from the inside. The patio was decorated with plants and string lights. It had picnic tables, most of which were covered by umbrellas. We got the only table that was under a canopy.By the way, I also noticed another indoor dining room called the "Rib Room." It's to your right upon entering. There was no one in there and it appeared to be closed. Maybe they didn't have enough staff to open that room. The night of our visit, it was "Brett's Open Mic," 7-10pm. "Brett" being Brett Chambers, who's been doing Open Mics since September 1996. Go to https://www.thebluenotegrill.com/events to see all upcoming events. According to The Blue Note Grill's website, they've been around since 2010 and moved to their current location at 709 Washington St in June 2015. They have live music nightly, Tuesday-Saturday. They're closed Sunday and Monday. The business is located on the northern edges of Durham's Central Park and Warehouse District neighborhoods. The building is old. Free parking is located next to and behind the building by an old wooden train trestle bridge and some defunct oil tanks. I'm not sure what was here before. Be careful pulling into and out of the parking lot because the ramp from the street was very steep. Sitting on the patio, we heard many cars hit and scrape the curb/driveway. The ramp needs to be redone/regraded.Along with barbecue, The Blue Note Grill serves burgers, sandwiches, chili, Brunswick stew, wings, barbecue/Southern sides, appetizers like crispy pickle fries and deviled eggs, and desserts like banana pudding and chocolate lava cake. Here's what we got:* Redneck Cheese Fries ($9.99) with Pickled Jalapenos (+$1.00) - French fries smothered with melted housemade pimento cheese, served with ranch dressing* Alaska Wild Wings ($9.99) - eight fried pollock bites with sweet red chili sauce and tartar sauce* Baby Back Ribs Full Rack ($31.99) with hush puppies, fried okra, and housemade coleslaw* Baby Back Ribs Half Rack ($19.99) with hush puppies, substitute salad (+$2.00), and fried okra* Pulled Pork BBQ Plate ($13.99) with hush puppies, collards, and green beans sauteed in bacon and onionsOverall, I thought the food was fine. Nothing stood out as either great or bad. My wife enjoyed the Redneck Cheese Fries more than I did. The ranch dressing was a nice touch. I liked the Alaska Wild Wings. They were crispy and boneless. They also came with celery and carrot sticks. The Baby Back Ribs were a bit too tough and chewy. However, the portion size was generous. The Pulled Pork was OK. In general, I think it and the sides lacked a bit of seasoning and flavor. The salad was fresh and came with onion, cheese, tomatoes, and carrots. The fried okra was yummy. The condiment basket included two kinds of barbecue sauces, Eastern NC (thinner, more vinegary) and Western NC (thicker, sweeter). Our server Kai S was great. He was funny and did a nice job. The other staff was great as well, including the hostess/manager. Despite a busy night, all of our food came out fast. There was a scan-QR-code-to-pay option on the receipt. I usually prefer this over using my physical card, but The Blue Note Grill uses Heartland Payment Systems who makes you download/install their app, sign up, and then pay. I didn't have time for that and paid with card instead. From a guest experience, Toast is better."

The parking is in the rear and you can enter through the backdoor. There's also a little ice cream place attached to the back end of the building so save room for dessert! It's definitely a place the locals frequent and the people behind the counter seemed to know every one of them. It didn't mater that we were newcomers, we felt as welcome as could be too.We had burgers and my, my, were they ever good!! They look like they're hand formed as the patties are irregular. They were already piled up on the grill as they clearly anticipated a crowd, so our order came up faster than we could get to a table (you order at the counter).I was a little skeptical, but it was a great burger - and cheap!! The fries are crinkle cut and were good too. As we ate the line at the counter got longer and longer as people kept piling in through the back door. It's no wonder why!Don't know if the people working behind the counter are the owners, but they're so friendly and he likes to burst into song frequently. What one, we weren't sure of, but it was entertaining. My only negative is that I don't live close to Smithfield, otherwise I'd be a regular customer! I look forward to returning and hopefully soon!"

Valerie V. "Not sure why this place has less than 4 stars. It's not a high end bougie restaurant, but the menu is extensive and has something for everyone. I would call this upscale/craft bar food. We came on National Margarita Day so I opted for the premium margarita. Not the best I have ever had, but it was smooth and not cheap tasting. Very good. We got the zucchini fries to start. Amazing. Light and crispy with the best homemade ranch. I always ask my server what their favorite menu item is if I've never been. I opted for her recommendation which I had been eyeing anyways - the sweet spicy fried chicken sandwich. Had a major kick without too much sweet which I loved. Get yourself some ranch or blue cheese on the side to dip it in to cut the spice a bit. My friend got the cheeseburger flatbread. It was huge. Our server says the size differs based on who is in the kitchen just fyi. Loved our server Sarah. We also came in on a Tuesday which happened to be trivia night so even though we were terrible it was fun!"
