I did my bottled water test at Passyunk Market which consists of me purchasing a 16 oz bottle of Poland Spring or a similar product to see how much it costs. From this I can gauge the relative thriftiness of the convenience store. Passyunk Market passed with flying colors. It was $1.00. I've paid up to $2.50 at other places, so I was pleased. It is obvious that this store caters to the old-school neighborhood folks, i.e. the Italian-Americans who have lived in this area for decades. There are fifty three million varieties of pasta, canned tomatoes, inexpensive olive oil, etc. They also have a large variety of fresh cheese, olives and pre-made salads (pasta, potato, etc). What I really liked was that they had 'gourmet' sodas, my kick these days, with no high-fructose corn syrup. Also, they have fresh and dried fruit and some vegetables. It is not an upscale market, but it's not entirely filled with junk food either.

I love this place. The $10 deli special is great for those on a budget and the cold salads, especially potato, are really good.

A shoddy little market that has been there forever; but they are worth a walk through just to gauge their inventory and prices, which are surprisingly good. Produce looks good and is reasonable, many times cheaper than Acme, and they have a deli in the back where you can score sandwiches and hot prepared foods like meatballs. My favorites are the obscure hard to find candies and chocolates, and the chintzy jewelry section where I can get my nosering bonestuds for 50 cents a piece. You heard right.

I was here today, waiting behind just one other person, but the cashier was making a priority of her telephone conversation at the time. Then, I noticed that both the dark and milk chocolate peanut chews, below and in front of the counter, had been significantly plundered by rodents. I tried to bring this to the attention of the still otherwise occupied cashier. Finally I set the boxes up on the counter, so she could see how there were numerous chewed up packages in each. Then, I went and put my things back and left. Later, I was passing by again when I said to myself "I bet you those cheap, dirty, so and sos just threw out the eaten packs, and put those boxes, that the mice had sat in eating, pissing and shitting, and put them right back on the shelves." You guessed it! I was right.

I was hungover and decided to try a cheap hoagie from here. It was less than $3 and I guess I got what I paid for. Bread was average, some standard turkey, tomatoes and shredded lettuce. It's a bit dodgy inside, but maybe that's just my impression as my hungover was rendered worse by the one guy yelling at some kid that he was stealing things. If you want to spend less than 3 bucks on a sup-par sandwich, go for it. (Sometimes we just have days like that!) If you want a quality sandwich and are okay with spending more, go elsewhere.

The Passyunk Market is a simple convenience store/deli, and it's a place I'll never patronize again. I've never bought food there because the place has a grimy unkempt feel to it, but I've popped in to grab a pack of smokes now and then. Today, when I stopped in for cigarettes, the young lady behind the counter went out of her way to grab my pack from the back of the row of cigarettes. I asked her why she did so and if she was trying to sell me an old stale pack. She seemed annoyed and offered to swap the pack for one from the front. Then, she pretended to exchange the pack and handed me the original pack from the back. I got home to have my first cigarette and it was the most stale cigarette I've ever smoked. I'm annoyed at this dishonesty and I'll never return to Passyunk Market.

I have lived in this area for my entire life, and this place has ALWAYS been a staple of the neighborhood. SOOO MANY THINGS are fantastic about Passyunk Market (formerly "Colonial Village"): Cold cuts, butcher meats, homemade salads (chicken salad, mac salad, potato salad, antipasto, etc etc etc), frozen pastas, roast pork and roast beef (comes with the frozen juice that is amazing), and so much more. Rob S.'s review of Passyunk Market is A JOKE. He's basing his entire review on his HUNGOVER 3 dollar hoagie escapade. They are NOT a hoagie joint. If you want a hoagie, go to Chickies or Primos...EVERYONE IN SOUTH PHILLY KNOWS THAT. Every place has their specialty, so if you order a CHEAP HOAGIE then that's what you're going to get...A CHEAP HOAGIE. It's as if I were to order surf-n-turf at a diner and then come online and rate them 2 stars because the meat was dry and overcooked. Passyunk Market is not just a market...it's an essential part of the area, and it's been there for MANY YEARS. It still looks the same as it did years ago, even though it changed owners (and names) about 10 years ago. When it changed from Colonial Village to Passyunk Market, we were worried that it wouldn't remain the same, but it has, and WE LOVE IT JUST AS MUCH for this reason, and EVEN MORE because they're still around.

It's so cold in Passyunk Market! primarily, I think, because half of the large frozen meat section. I was impressed that in a market no bigger than a 7-11, you could find decent cuts of beef and load up on real lunch meats---not the prepackaged Oscar Meyer stuff they sell at most convenience markets.
