Dati's Homemade Water Ice & Ice Cream

I used to have a Data entry job. I'd much rather have had a Dati Entry Job.Dirt cheap and delicious water ice, and dati's wussup.South Philadelphia is famous for its water ice. Stupid tourists come here and try awful cheesesteaks from the stupid neon light places. They don't even know a good sandwich when it smacks them in the face (John's Roast Pork, Nick's Roast Beef). Unfortunately they also don't know about the water ice. If they did then little places like this and Pops would be way busier. Come here and try real water ice and gelati. You won't regret it. Just stay away from that banana thing cuz it totally sucks.

I don't know what's in the cookies and cream, but it had a taste that just reminded me of childhood. My Nana made homemade ice cream when it was backbreaking, time-consuming, and you had to pour the salt around the cylinder.. so I know when someone puts love into what they are doing!!They have a variety of items: hand-scooped ice cream, soft served, water ice, and specialty items they create. I normally don't get cones during the summer because they make such a mess, but this night was cool and my sugar cone was delicious.The lil gal ordered a soft-serve vanilla cone with rainbow jimmies, which she enjoyed. I now realize I didn't take a picture of her cone which I always do.. I was so deep into mine, I forgot haha. Great customer service and if you're from out of town, you will also get the opportunity to hear an authentic South Philly accent at the window!! :) I loved seeing families taking pictures with their treats seated on the bench on the side of the store. Looking forward to returning many times throughout the summer !!

The kind of place your kids will grow up remembering visiting on hot summer nights. Or at least mine will as we come here a little too often. Dati's is a South Philly gem. A Mom & Pop shop (with the sweetest owners you can imagine) serving homemade ice cream and "Wooder ice" as well as other delicious goodies!! Personally, I'm a HUGE fan of their banana whips! Just bananas, no guilt and oh, so creamy and delicious!!! You can't achieve this consistency at home. Trust me, I've tried. Several, several times. They offer their insanely delicious ice cream (banana chocolate chip is bananas! Pun so intentional and he just made some coffee Heath Bar!) with every kind of cone you can imagine, with every kind of topping you desire including JIMMIES, because that's what we call it here in Philly! Get it straight. Gelati, Gelati shakes, hot brownie sundaes, milkshakes, Belgium waffles and ice cream, ice cream filled canolis (using the local bakery's canolis) Arctic swirls, ice cream sammys (singles or 6 packs), banana splits and chocolate covered bananas to name a few. Oh, and they also sell Ice cream cakes!! They also offer snacks like warm chocolate chip cookies, soft pretzels, nachos, pizza pretzels, cheese pretzels, even pepperoni pretzels. It's a must stop when in the neighborhood. It's even a must stop if you're not....come by! Grab a seat on the big red bench outside and enjoy!

Yet another lemon water ice that tasted like canned lemonade mix.

Great water ice served in solo jazz cups. Legit. It's the texture that makes it superior imo. Very smooth with clean flavors like cherry, chocolate, mango and more.

We tried this place because we had a craving for gelatti (which is basically just water ice with ice cream on top). I tried the mango water ice with vanilla ice cream as well as the cherry water ice with the vanilla ice cream. The ice cream was okay it just tasted kind of fake and heavy like the icing on top of sheet cakes but the water ice was so good! It was too bad it all kind of melted together in a gross blend but next time I go, I will just get the water ice by itself.

So I went here tonight specifically for the pizza pretzel. I find it difficult to find a good one. Sadly I'm still searching.. They use a good pretzel! My issue was the cheese, it was barely melted. The sauce was good but very very sweet. I wasn't looking for a gourmet pizza pretzel. This one was good though. Just wish the cheese was melted. The water ice was pretty good as well. It wasn't thick and it wasn't overly sweet. I will give it another shot. Overall I was pleased, 3-4 stars

Been going here for years and gets better every time!! I normally get water ice but this time decided to be bold and try the waffle sundae great choice.

On our mini vacation first date Dave and I came to Dati's to satiate my water ice cravings (he got soft serve like a weirdo). There are some things that just embody philly and for me it's water ice, the warm air of a dryer vent on a cold evening, and the parking authority. Water ice is more Philly to me than a cheese steak or a street pretzel, more than Rocky or Ben Franklin. It's also more than just Italian ice or shaved ice. I remember the place clearly as it wasn't my first time at this establishment. It's the picture perfect South philly water ice place. A little hole in the wall where you're served through a window with a smile and a little bit of that philly attitude. My water ice was picture perfect as well. I got red and it was the perfect consistency and flavor all served up in a little paper cup. Just writing this makes me crave a spoonful right now. If you're in philly and are craving water ice please choose Dati's it may not be as polished as Rita's but it's the real deal.
