You gotta know what to expect when you're ordering from China House... It's a bare bones, simple, basic, American Chinese food restaurant. You can find the standard sesame chicken, fried rice, lo mein type dishes and they also have pizza rolls, chicken wings, and other American style foods. I'm a sucker for basic Chinese takeout so I do actually like it a lot.Not everything here is great, though. For example, while the wontons in the wonton soup are good, the broth doesn't have much flavor. But most of the other dishes are very good and definitely a bargain, given the low prices.I've gone to pick up my food several times and they are always very nice in there. You can even get a view of them cooking the food so you know it isn't just sitting around or being microwaved.

The "Why is everyone ordering Chinese?" entry in my Dining in the Age of Corona diary. Seriously. Perfectly understandable why some restaurants were not open for takeout/delivery in the 'early days'. What this left, though, were some very overwhelmed places, especially right after stimulus checks were received. Soooo, off to our Handy Dandy Yelp App, where we found we could easily order, and since this is not terribly far, could zip down and pick up. Online ordering was really a breeze, and the selection was good. We could easily park on Manoa (yay!) right by the place. Entering we found it was super clean, everyone was masked and they had a large plexiglas sheet at the counter - all measures that say they take health & welfare seriously. Good! Our order was ready, well packaged, and the staff were super nice. Food was quite good, the General Tso's Chicken was the star, nicely sweet and spicy - so many places lose that kick of heat. Mmmmm. We'd definitely order from them again, even after more restaurants that are closer are available (they are, since this visit) because of the ease of ordering, their caring about health and welfare and the very good food.

We ordered because it had gotten such good reviews. Unfortunately, the food was less than good. The egg rolls were so salty , they were un-eatable. And the two main dishes , kung Pao chicken and orange chicken were mushy and fatty. We wound up just throwing them away.

First of all - I don't know where that picture of the tables comes from, the place is a take out. Second, the guy at his cell phone tells it all. When I went in there he was behind the counter. He didn't even stand up. A young woman took my order. Behind them a lone man in a dead kitchen was fumbling around with nothing. The stoves were cold. I ordered the "NEW" house special crispy chicken. Well, it was about as crispy as your soggy Cheerios and about as tasteless. This stuff clearly comes from the generic Chinese take-out warehouse.Stick to the real stuff in Ardmore and Wynnewood proper.

Love this place. We call all the time. Their food is delicious and not crazy expensive. Delivery is quick and I get a kick out of the owner recognizing my voice every time I call. We have tried other local places but always come back to China House. Try the General Tao Flounder, you won't be sorry.

First, some comments about Tony M's review from 7/15/2018: "I don't know where that picture of the tables comes from, the place is a take out." Yes, it's primarily take-out, but I've eaten there numerous times -- it's bare bones, but there are at least a half-dozen tables. "Second, the guy at his cell phone tells it all. When I went in there he was behind the counter. He didn't even stand up. A young woman took my order." I have never seen anyone behind the counter but the owner, a woman probably in her 30s, and she's been attentive and friendly. "Behind them a lone man in a dead kitchen was fumbling around with nothing. The stoves were cold." Been there at least a dozen times, and there was always someone cooking, and all of the stoves and other cooking devices (fryers, etc.) were cranked up and ready to go.Everything I've ordered has been excellent, and unlike most Chinese restaurants they actually read and follow special instructions: I always ask for my Gen Tso's Chicken to be sauce on the side, and it always is. In fact, I ordered Sweet & Sour Pork once with the Gen Tso, and they put the sauce on the side for the pork as well; i.e., they generalized from my request not to have my Gen Tso sitting in sauce getting soggy, and applied the same instructions to another fried dish with sauce.Ignore Tony M. -- he's clearly talking about a different restaurant, because none of what he says about the Manoa Road China House is accurate.
