You know you are in a rough part of town when you walk into a convenience store and there is a bulletproof glass-encased Western Union check cashing booth, a large array of malt liquor selections but only one kind of White Claw, and an employee and customer are having an open conversation about crystal meth and how it alters your appearance. But tucked away inside this dilapidated part of east Burlington is a true diamond in the rough: Old Fogies. OF is very cute, is run by a very cheerful and helpful staff, and serves up a fine lunch. I ordered a Reuben with potato salad and a sweet tea. The Reuben was beautiful, with a flat and crispy exterior and a warm and tasty interior. Either they have a sandwich maker appliance or the sandwich maker person is a sandwich grilling master. It was delicious. Note: they put dijon mustard on it instead of the traditional thousand island. The potato salad was very good. A bit mild (nothing Texas Pete couldn't fix), though, but it had a delightful texture. The potatoes (red skin) were perfect--not too hard and not too soft--and very tasty. The sweet tea was excellent--a perfect amount of both tea and sugar. Just a fine sweet tea. I asked for a sample of the chicken salad, and it was EXCELLENT. A chicken salad melt from OF would surely be award winning. Maybe next time...OF is a really neat place. And from my experience, it lives up to its name. I am 50 and was easily the youngest customer in the place. I think that the pace, atmosphere, items on their somewhat limited menu appeal to members of the Silent Generation, the Baby Boomers, and perhaps some of Generation X. I do NOT see this place having a huge appeal to hipsters or millennials, or, thankfully, to hipster millennials, the most obnoxiously pretentious humans ever described in the annals of anthropology. Worth noting: I actually found this place by typing "hot dogs" in the Yelp search. They don't have hot dogs. They have mostly sandwiches. And no fries. Fortunately I knew this ahead of time because I looked at the menu. This is one of those places that charmed me so much that I can't stop thinking about it. Definitely worth a visit...if you're old enough.

Interesting little place with a very limited menu - Soup (only during cold months, so no soup for you today - no bread either, I would guess, come back 6 months); Salads, and Hot & Cold Sandwiches - but NO Burger or Hot Dog.; and a variety of side dishes.Salads run the usual gamuet: House, Chef, Chicken, Grilled, Egg, Tuna, etc , runing $4.25 to $6. The sandwiches run hot and cold: BLT, Grilled Cheese, Turkey, Ham, Egg Salad, Tuna Salad, Subs, Chicken Club, and others - pricing in the $6 - $7 range, with a side.I tried the Chicken Salad becauce Chuch S. at Old Sharkey's recommended it, and it was a very nice sandwich. Got mine on white, untoasted, with pasta salad, also nice. The Chicken Salad is almost a curried Chicken Salad, in tatste and color. The taste is nice, if just a tad on the sweet side, due to the kind of pickle used. Cost was $5.50.This place is quick, efficient, and friendly. This is the essence of a low tech operation - pepsi comes in a can with a cup of ice.

Total hole in the wall kind of place. Great food, good prices, friendly service. It can get busy around lunch time and there isn't much room for waiting on a table. There chicken salad is especially delicious!

We ate breakfast at the Mason Jar again. We loved the Valentine tree and decor. Food was good and hot. Husband got the sampler again but instead of gravy, he got grits. I order the 1egg breakfast with 2 pieces of sausage, tater tots and a biscuit. A lot of food and reasonably priced. Service was very friendly and quick to refill coffees and water. We plan to order a bit differently next time. So glad they are near our house in Alamance County.

Old Fogies is the answer to all my woes, or at least my lunch woes. I am in the Burlington area on business working near downtown and have found myself in this weird alternate restaurant universe. A chili dog doesn't include the weiner, come on, how does that make any sense? Plus it is almost impossible to find the quintessential turkey sandwich. We can all rest assured, Old Fogies is the answer to this weird alternate restaurant universe and they have a really good turkey sandwich too.It is the perfect little lunch place with friendly and very quick service. I felt a need to bask in this respite of lunch normalcy and ordered a little bit of everything. I had you can probably guess, a turkey sandwich, with a side of pasta salad. I had heard their chicken salad was really good, so I ordered a scoop of that too, it is really good and I strongly recommend it. I am also a sucker for a good sweet/quick bread and with banana nut available I had to get that also. Then if that wasn't enough I went for a piece of their cake, a nice piece of moist strawberry with a vanilla icing. It is definitely home made and like everything else very good.I will be back at least once a week when in town. It is one of those restaurants that doesn't do anything fancy or complicated, but what it does it does very well. Oh Old Fogies, thank you for being exactly what you should be.
