Came here for my birthday and had a fantastic dinner! Saw lots of online reviews about how Matsuri is one of the best places in Miami for real, fresh sushi without the frills or overpricing of the downtown restaurants and it didn't disappoint. It's not the biggest restaurant, located in an unassuming stirp mall, but the inside is clean and a bit bigger than it looks from the outside. The menu is quite extensive with not just a full assortment of sushi but hot foods, appetizers, grilled items, noodle or soup dishes, and a bunch of other unique and as well as authentic items you don't see at a lot of the other sushi restaurants around Miami. Most tables I saw had some version of their dinner special sets (the Tomo Ren, Go-to Ren, etc) which are an assortment of high quality nigiri, sashimi, and rolls you can get in quantities for 2 or more people. We started with an order of cold soba noodles which were nice and chewy with a nice, not overly salty soup base and a dollop of wasabi to give it a nice kick. For dinner, we got the Go-To Ren for 2 which came with a beautiful assortment of nigiri, what I think was a negi-toro roll, a few types of generously cut sashimi, and a little portion of grilled chicken which was a nice surprise. The fish was all fresh and delicious, with rice that had the perfect consistency without breaking up. The toro was especially delicious, as well as the lightly seared salmon and the creamy scallop. With each piece the fish really shined through, and while $80 isn't exactly "cheap", it's a great price for this much delicious fish of this quality while avoiding all the frills and flashiness of downtown.Whether it's for a special event or just a relaxing dinner out, I highly recommend giving Matsuri a try!

Spit the food out. IDK what is wrong with Miami and their "sushi," but as a Minnesota native from the middle of the upper midwest with no ocean coast in sight and surrounded by lakes, I had expected sooo much more from Miami.Re: Matsuri. Due to the high reviews, I thought hey! Maybe this spot will actually deliver? I was especially encouraged by the menu's items of Ōtoro and Chūtoro. Welp. The Japanese vernacular may be accurately authentic but nothing else is.I ordered the "mixed" sunomono and the "sushi mori awase" and upgraded the $2 for the maki. The upgrade to the maki was the one solid decision I made. Everything else was legit spit out worthy. I choked and dry heaved up the food throughout the meal just because I knew I was paying for the food and did not want it to go to waste. Overview:1.) Salad with the entree - Overcooked spaghetti is more crunchy and firm than the iceberg lettuce I was given with the singularly overly acidic and purely vinegar dressing. I took 2 - 3 bites, told the lettuce I was sorry that I could not finish it and it was to go to waste, and set it aside. 2.) "Sunomono." Better to call it "soggy seaweed, cucumber, kani (fake/imitation crab), and a few pieces of surf clam and octopus with a rubbery flayed shrimp drowning in a brown vinegar that tasted spoiled rancid. For $11...what a disgusting waste. 3.) The Sushi Mori Awase...Three of the pieces of "nigiri" were the thinnest pieces I had ever seen of any sushi establishment nation-wide (and I've had sushi in NYC, New Jersey, Philadelphia, Boston, Orlando, Minneapolis/St. Paul, Chicago, Seattle, Portland, LA, DC, Baltimore, and the desert of Scottsdale/ Phoenix Arizona for F**s sake) and tasted like someone went garbage surfing to then slap the thin non existent "protein" onto a bed of poorly treated rice. That is the major gripe...SUSHI is technically referring to the treatment and flavor singularity of the RICE and NOT THE RAW FISH/seafood aspect, which is a major misconception of most diners. SUSHI is rice that is treated with the correct balance of seasoning, temperature and proportion to give the diner the balance of umami, sweatness, texture and unctuousness. This rice? I barely dipped it into the soy sauce (which was badly needed to dampen the disgusting taste of the fish) and the rice fell apart. I could not eat half of the nigiri (sushi) without the rice falling apart as I tried to lift the piece to my mouth. When I successfully was able to eat some of the "sushi rice," it tasted like stale and dried rice like it was cooked inproperly and sat out at room temperature for many hours. Gross.Miami...WHAT THE HELL!?!??!?! WHY IS YOUR SUSHI SO TERRIBLE?!?!?! Overpriced, improperly cooked rice, spoiled/thin/skimping on portions fish and just making a customer feel bad for wasting food and angry for wasting so much money on trash.Go to a Frattanga, Cuban restaurant, Peruana (Peruvian) restaurant, Colombian/Salvadorian/Nicaraguan/Mexican/Venezuelan/ Chapino (Guatemalan)/ Italian/ McDonalds/ foodtruck/ back of the alley left over trash from any of these above mentioned establishments and you will be MUCH happier.

This easily-missed restaurant, located in a strip mall has some of the best, high quality fish you can find in Miami, and although it's not cheap, it's very fairly priced.Focus on the fish! The Tomo Tomo is an incredible order. You get an eclectic array of the very best nigiri, sashimi, etc. It comes with 2 items but you can double it if you have a larger party. The agedashi tofu and chicken yakitori are other great additions to the meal. You can't make a reservation and the restaurant gets packed so for a mid-week lunch, I'd recommend arriving by 11:45 to ensure you get a table. Only complaint is that the restaurant should get a better sign. But the fact that the restaurant is packed despite the lack of signage is a true testament to the food

If you're looking for fresh sushi at a fraction of the cost of a typical miami restaurant, you must check out Matsuri. @matsurimiami is truly a miami staple that has been around for over 30 years! That's a great sign especially when there's always a line outside. Matsuri is a neighborhood restaurant located in a shopping center off bird road and 57th Ave. Nothing fancy but it looks pretty clean and always super PACKED! During the week, they have incredible lunch specials which are probably cheaper than fast food. I'm talking $12 for an entire meal that includes a miso soup or salad, California roll & a bento box with options such as chicken teriyaki, sashimi, etc. What a STEAL!! My go to options are either the Tomo Tomo special for 2 which is a massive platter of sushi and sashimi ($100) or the Go To Ren Special which is similar to the tomo tomo but served in a smaller quantity with top quality fish (starting at $80 for 2 people). These platters also come with a soup or salad to start. The sushi and sashimi are so fresh, never fishy and absolutely divine! They also sell beer and sake. If you haven't been to matsuri, be sure to check them out! They also offer online ordering for pickup :) Follow me on instagram for more on this and other foodie adventures @lagordademiami

This review is long overdue. This is my go-to spot in Miami for sushi for two reasons: price and consistency.I'm huge into sashimi so fish quality is extremely important to me and Matsuri has never let me down. I order their Chirachi which is thick, fresh cuts of sashimi over warm sushi rice. You can upgrade for a couple extra dollars for top cut which is slightly better fish. Their selection of raw fish rolls are also really good and are filled with a generous amount of fish. One thing I'm not a fan of is the service. It's very hard to make a reservation and when I dine-in, I feel slightly rushed by staff to be in and out because they always have so many people waiting for a table. For that reason, I prefer to carry-out instead of dining-in. The restaurant is also slightly narrow in width and all of the tables are placed in a straight line and very close together. However, for some of the freshest sushi in Miami at an amazing price, Matsuri's the spot. Trust me.

The food here is incredibly delicious and fresh and although sometimes it takes a while to be seared because it's such a popular place, the food comes out quickly once you order. My only hesitation about eating here is that you will frequently end up with only like 2 feet between you and the next table so sometimes it feels like you are sharing a table with strangers. It's a small space you hear everyone's conversations and it can get very loud in there but the food is so good I keep going back

Miami locals seem to love this spot. I revisited here recently on a weekday for lunch. My initial time many years ago did not seem to leave too memorable an impression on me.This place was absolutely packed for lunch and quite loud inside. It's better to come right when they open or order takeout. We waited almost 30 minutes for a table, during which time many people came to pick up their takeout/delivery orders. Our server was incredibly busy and made the mistake of giving us another table's sushi. She quickly corrected this once we brought it to her attention. We got the eel rice, which is off the menu but they can make it for you. Honestly the eel tastes like the frozen ones you can get at the Asian supermarket and heat it up yourself. I thought their rice was really delicious. The sushi was solid and the fish tasted fresh.

I can safely say as an avid sushi enthusiast, this is the best sushi in Miami! We made reservations 2 weeks in advance since they were full already one week out. This is a small restaurant but they are very efficient. We got 2 bottles of sake, the Kano salad, the Tomo-Tomo special for 2 and we finished off dinner with the Banana tempura. The total was $200 before tip! We thought that was an amazing deal for everything we ate. The sushi was incredibly fresh! I just came back from Japan and I would say it is comparable to the freshness! With this dish you leave super full and the salmon just melts in your mouth. The cuts of tuna were incredible and the rice to fish ratio was on point. I wanted to come back here again this weekend but they are fully reserved so I will just dream about this meal until we can go again!

came here on a wednesday at 8pm and was able to get a table for two! service was good, not great. typical of a restaurant of this caliber i suppose. waitress helped us out with any questions, was great at clearing plates to make space, but i will say our waters were never filled.despite it being a wednesday and there being a tropical storm, it was quite busy and bustling which was nice to see. i like how you can watch the sushi being prepared, and the overall aesthetic of the place made me feel like comfy and cozy.now for food. everything was outstanding! we got hotate fry (fried scallops), the unagi tofu, 2 sushi mori awases, and 2 each of unagi, uni, and ohtoro. the scallops were interesting! i liked how they used the entire scallop including the mantle. i really enjoyed the texture and taste of it.unagi tofu was something i've never had but it was delicious! fried tofu and eel in a flavorful sauce.the sushi itself was all amazing. the fish was nice and thick and fresh. i wasn't expecting to get so full but by the end i was struggling to finish the plate. i'm glad i didn't order any extra rolls. but i would love to go back and try other things off their menu! it's so extensive and creative that i'd like to explore it!

Often go to Matsuri. Occassionaly have been critical, but generally this place is at the top certainly insofar their sushi. Everything we had last night was mouthwatering. Their hamachi is consistently terrific. Thing is Matsuri has been in Miami a very long time and thankfully located for just us locals. And maintaining a high level this long is not easy but Masa always has terrific seafood. Today in Miami there seems to be a sushi restaurant everywhere, and oh yes everybody now says they're great "omakase", and ridiculously overcharge as well. The more they advertise this omakase well these newer places are not all that much, definitely not a close second.
