A group of friends and I went to JW's Place Soul Food & Barbeque Restaurant one day after work for dinner. I hesitated in writing this because I only saw one review for their Conroe location but felt that the following would be helpful for the employees and staff there to note. The place is very inviting, open, spacious, and clean. The pleasant and relaxed ambience is there. We were very pleased with the environment. Everyone was kind and welcoming. We felt comfortable. The waitress was very patient and supportive. The beverages, entrees, and dessert had good and fair points. I'm not certain if the waitress heard me correctly but I asked for baby back ribs. The ribs were not baby back. They were more so St. Louis style ribs. The meat was tender, fell off the bones, and was very good, but I was looking for baby back ribs. The cabbage was excellent, but I was wanting for collard greens. The first time I went there was for a takeout (this was my 2nd visit) and the "greens of the day" at that time was collards. They were seasoned well. I am originally from Detroit and had never heard of a soul food restaurant that didn't have any collard greens on their menu daily. That was somewhat disappointing. The mashed potatoes didn't have much of a flavor at all. The sweet tea was good, not overly sweet. Two ladies in my group had the smothered pork chops. They were more on the thick side and thinner pork chops are preferable in a smothered pork chop recipe. Their mac & cheese was not to any of their liking. It had a grainy taste and was not creamy with melted cheese throughout nor did it seem to have different types of cheeses like many of the other soul food restaurants prepare. Not certain if eggs had been beaten in the preparation; didn't look like it because the consistency was somewhat runny and liquid-like. The beans were tasty and seasoned well. Another lady had catfish and said it was fried to her liking but not much taste in the potatoes. Another lady had a vegetable platter which they don't have on their menu, so it was nice that they prepared that for her. She was satisfied.None of us cared for the dessert we selected which was a pound cake that had a type of lemon icing. The cake itself was lacking flavor, but the lemon icing was good. The waitress took us on a tour and the upstairs is magnificent. There are separate women and men's rooms that you can reserve. Very nice for small gatherings, meetings, etc. Outside in the back is very nice as well with the patios. There is a stage inside where they plan to increase their live entertainment (unfortunately no entertainment that evening) along with karaoke night. There was also mentioned of brunch days.JW's place seems to be on its way. Looks like it has a good future with room for minor improvements and adjustments. For that reason, I am giving it a 4.2/5.0 stars. We are happy that there is a soul food restaurant nearby (we are educators in The Woodlands) instead of going all the way downtown almost to Sugarland (40 minutes one-way), but hopefully JW's will catch up and even surpass the H-town soul flavors. We're curious to see how their Thanksgiving meals will turn out.We will definitely visit JW's again in the future. It was a fun outing and we wish them well. We had such a good time that we gave our waitress a small ceramic pumpkin as a gift. We appreciated the experience.

Saturday 9/2/23 - 2pm and the place looks abandoned. Not a single car in the parking lot. 2 other ppl pulled up looking to eat as well. No signs on the door, nothing indicating they are permanently closed. I'm not sure what they have going on but don't waste your gas and time coming here!

We just had the best lunch at JW's Place Soul Food & Barbeque. I was so excited when I opened their menu and there it was "Liver & Onions". I seldom get this favorite dish as my husband doesn't care for it or as he puts it "I wouldn't put it to my lips!" The Liver & Onions were Yum! Yum! Yum! I believe it served with gravy but I'm a gravy snob (actually I don't care for most gravy) so I ordered it without. I chose mashed potatoes & cabbage as my sides; both were also good. Husband ordered Brisket with smoked pinto beans and coleslaw. The brisket was so tender he could cut it with his fork. He also gave a bug thumbs up to the sides; especially the coleslaw. Our server was excellent & attentive. Everyone was very friendly, asking if everything was good and if we enjoyed our meals. You'll find a pleasant atmosphere with soft jazz playing in the background. We'll go back , especially when I'm craving Liver & Onions.

I'm hesitant to write this review because finding this hidden gem and now writing about it may make them extremely busy. But here we are so settle in and let me tell you about a great cool place that I wish I had known about sooner. JW's Place is defintely worth finding! We walked in and you seat yourself, the owners daughter told us she'd be over with a couple menus except the owner beat her to it by a couple minutes. She then took our drink order and said our waitress Kayla would be over shortly to take our order.Kayla brought our drinks and took our order. My wife was between ribs and oxtail so she asked what she recommended (Which I kinda figured I would know the answer to). Kayla replied hands down the oxtail, she mentioned that it comes with either rice or mashed potatoes and two sides. My wife decided on the mashed potatoes which was definitely the right choice! Her other two sides were mac n cheese and cabbage. I ordered the smothered pork chop which came with rice (I think next time I'm going to see if I can substitute mashed potatoes because those were perfect, more on that later). Mine also came with two sides so I went with the okra & tomatoes and greens. As we waited they have tvs with various things playing all around the restaurant and some great music playing (Might have been a bit loud for the amount of people in the restaurant but not too loud). I saw that they are set up with a nice bar under what looks like some balcony seating, possibly a private party room or just additional seating for when they get busy. They also had a stage off to one side for live music. Our food arrives and talk about mouth watering. Everything looked great and smelled even better! We started by trying all the sides which was easy to do since they came in separate bowls. The okra and tomatoes were awesome, a bit salty but awesome! I ended up drinking the juice when I finished them. The greens... if they would have brought me more at the end of the meal I would have devoured them even though I was stuffed! That's how good they were and I actually told my wife I would do that exact thing when we were there. Her mac n cheese was creamy and cheesy like you want not overly done or chewy like you get at times. Her cabbage was tasty as well, done just right crisp and not cooked to death. Now for the entrees... I tried a bite of my smothered pork chop, the knife went thru it like butter. OMG the flavor... amazing, the cook on the chop... perfect. It had the perfect chew. Then I tried my wife's oxtail. It was melt in your mouth perfect! the sauce and mashed potatoes were the perfect accompaniment. Creamy mashed potatoes and oxtail you don't even have to chew all covered in an amazing sauce. I will say she won this round but not by much.We would have tried the peach cobbler if we had enough from to try it. Maybe next time, which there will definitely be a next time which could be this week as a matter of fact.I do hope I helped you decide if you'd like to give them a try cause they definitely deserve the patronage. I've attached photos to help you decide.

Very disappointed. I drove there and they were closed although their site says they're open. I sent a message and they messaged back and said they closed in April and are only doing catering.

The fish taste more like tilapia which I don't care for, and was bland. The broccoli rice dish was tasty. The chicken on a bun was almost tasteless and had minimal smoke and seasoning. The greens lacked flavor, and could use another hour of cook time. They forgot part of our meal so we all had to share. It was very average.
