Harris County Smokehouse

Ok so this might be my not so favourite thing to do. I haven't put on a review since I didn't like my experience the first time around a month ago. Thinking we give it another try about 2 weeks ago and the same experience greeted us when we visited.It just might be due to people having a bad day or simply loss of interest in the things they like to do, cooking, prepping, guest host, servers, we all tend to have our low days. I shall try again for the third time later and update my review.

I normally get breakfast tacos which are good but a little bit pricey. My recent visit was to get chopped barbecue sandwiches. By the time I got home the buns were soaked in grease. Had to eat the meat with forks, buns fell apart and you could squeeze the grease out . Onion rings were great, French fries not.

Three stars isn't bad, but it's not great either. For starters, the brisket quesadilla should have been great. It was just 'okay', mainly suffering from relatively bland brisket. I will say, the protein was tender and juicy and came with all the fixings, just not the punch of flavor you'd expect from a smokehouse. (It did come with a generous portion of store bought salsa, but whatever ... I didn't come here for BBQ sauce, salsa, and pico). The seasoned rice from the steam-table lime wasn't good or bad. Un memorable is a better description.I am pretty sure that in a few days I won't remember it as something I even ate. The steamed vegetables were similar--a bit bland, but again, I didn't come here for veggies per se, so take my review of the sides with a grain of salt. Line service and table delivery were pretty standard and relatively fast. I will ding them for not accepting ApplePay (and presumably Google Pay) even though the register had the little insignia for it. C'mon, this is 2023. Get with the program!Bummer. The decor is pretty standard, old school Wild West (cow statues, boots and such, and LOTS of wood, etc.) ... it's a nice theme. However, if you have a stronger constitution than I do, and you can better-resist your stomach's food commands, I'd recommend passing on this spot. There are way too many great BBQ/Southern-style restaurants in the greater-Houston area, at similar price points, to settle for middle-of-the-road.

Begin with a cheerful note for the staff - a smile from employees can make a significant difference! Moving on to the cuisine, unfortunately, the ribs lacked the desired texture, and the BBQ sauce didn't meet expectations. The mac 'n' cheese was overly mushy, and the brisket turned out dry. The food is good.The attitude of the butchers / carvers is consistent and terribly so. I don't know why these folks are so unhappy.

Save your money. The meat I tasted was probably better off still alive. The brisket was chewy and the sausage was hard with no flavor. Maybe they should have drenched it with bbq sauce. The Mac and cheese was watery and Brussel sprouts were just there. Not enough salt and pepper could help those things. The best thing was the free corn bread. I won't be going back!!

Be warned this isn't a family friendly place as it shuffles you quickly through a line with no explanation how to order. There is no prices anywhere and the prices are extremely expensive for the size portions and sides. My wife says places like this shouldn't be allowed to be open because we both felt like we were robbed.The food was dry and lack luster on top of the tiny portions. Everyone was still hungry when we left so we got Dairy Queen next door on the way home. I have never been this unsatisfied with any restaurant before. There's a reason your restaurant is empty.

There are NO prices listed inside the restaurant when ordering. For two adults, three children, the total was $120. The brisket was dry and flavorless. The sides were bland and very limited options. Would never recommend this place or eat here again. If there actually was pricing posted, we must have missed them based on how fast your employees ushered us through the line. One star is generous.

Food was better than expected from a quick cafeteria seat yourself style! The brisket was moist and tender, the baked beans delish and the variety of food impressive! They had breakfast selections the served all day and cooked food to order off the food line. Staff were friendly and the hot free bread and muffins were delish! I will be back again! Well worth the price.

Two people for lunch with 10% tip and no wait staff. $48. Very high price. Ribs were dry. Potatoes were dry. Green beans were fair. Way overpriced. Cashier was not friendly at all.
