I came to support a black business in a small town I ordered the oxtail plate, which cost about 30.00 the lady who was serving started picking though the oxtail as if they were going to run out no one was in the place. Needless to say I will not be going back I got like 5 small oxtail a scoop of black eyed peas and yams

I hate to be the first four-star review but I have to be honest about my assessments and concerns. Getting to the point, the food is delicious. It was nice to get a home-away-from-home cooked meal. Evelyn was so kind to let us sample many of the options. They were all displayed like a buffet but you can only choose one main entree and two sides. You also get a side of cornbread with your meal. I was able to taste the smoked turkey, chicken and dumplings, corn and a bit more. My friends and I were hooked in. All of the menu offerings were written on the chalkboard but what compelled me to reduce the rating to four stars was due to the lack of signage for the pricing. I wish I had taken a photo so you could see what I mean. I made some assumptions, unfortunately. I assumed that every entree was priced the same. If it weren't, why wouldn't the pricing be posted? How would I know that the oxtails would be much more than the chicken and dumplings or the steak?? I didn't ask because I assumed no matter what I got, would be under $20. I only had so much cash on me. I was far from home and had left my debit card in my other purse and had no idea my bank wasn't anywhere close to this town. After she fixed our plate with generous portions, I had my $20 bill in hand ready to pay. She told us to go ahead and eat first. That may have been smart because after we had dug in and was nice and full, it was too late to change our minds after learning the cost of the bill.A nice lady on staff asked us what we wanted to drink, I said water. It's my usual. I prefer to eat my calories than drink them. Again, I assumed she was going to bring us a cup with water in it but instead she brought us each a bottled water. I was so immersed in my meal that I didn't speak up and say, "Oh no thank you. I thought you were going to bring cups of water." I just let it go. When it was time to pay, I was shocked when she said that my bill was $27.01. To my horror, I only had $26 and a penny in my purse. If my friend hadn't been there to give me a dollar, I would have been jacked! It was so embarrassing. I usually pay with a card so that never happens. My friends' steak and chicken and dumplings also with the bottled waters didn't cost as much as mine. Had I known the oxtails were going to end up being $27, I would have made a lessor choice. I've only ordered oxtails from Jamaican/Caribbean restaurants and never paid that much. I just paused to look up the menu of a Caribbean restaurant in California and even post pandemic the price is $16.95 for an ox tails plate.Why did she ask us what hotel we were staying at before she rung us up? It made me wonder if the locals paid a different price. Why didn't i remember to ask for a receipt?? I usually do but forgot this time. I must have still been shook.I was sad that all my cash on hand was gone that I couldn't even leave a tip for their wonderful service. Now that I live in Texas, I need to work on my Texan accent. Maybe that would have helped. Not making assumptions definitely would have helped me out too. Oh well. You live and learn.I bless them and this business and pray they continue to prosper.

Traveling in the South, cafes only consider one vegetable: mac 'n cheese. I wasn't thrilled when hubby suggested we go to Evelyn's. I was blown away from the time we walked in to the friendly greetings, atmosphere and attentive service! Veggies galore!!!! I was in heaven!!! I had 4 options... took me several minutes to whittle it down to 4! Their green beans, okra stew (hubby usually doesn't like it this way... but Evelyn hit the spot!), cabbage (like no other!), sweet potatoes (emphasis on sweet!), and the corn tased liked they had just picked it! Hubby's fried fish was exactly what I like... crisp coating and HOT tender fish inside. We're sorry we didn't get the greens, oxtail, beef tips... come on...you can only eat so much! This experience was definitely a soulful one! Did I mention the melt-in-the-mouth cornbread? I inhaled it! Love these people AND the food! Are they open for breakfast? I could go back!

I have been meaning to try this place for a long time after hearing from trusted sources that it is good. I have been craving some good oxtails so, on my way to work tonight, I stopped in to get a to-go plate. I was greeted warmly the second I stepped inside. Everyone was friendly and I felt welcome. I ordered oxtails over rice, mustard greens, black-eyed peas, and corn bread. They loaded up that to-go plate nice and heavy! All the way to work, I could smell that good food and my tummy was growling! I was not disappointed. It was delicious! Very well seasoned and tender. I hurt myself. I sure wish I could take a nap! I will return, I can't wait to try the pork chops and beef tips. They have definitely got it going on at Evelyn's!

I know that's right! My family and I stopped by for a quick Saturday lunch and the experience at Evelyn's was nothing short of amazing! We were greeted and felt very welcome. They have a lovely atmosphere and enough room to view your choices. We tried so many different meals, the beef tenders were juicy and seasoned perfectly. The oxtails were a 15/10, the smothered pork chops were a 10/10. They also serve a variety of desserts that will leave you wanting more! We will most definitely be back.

I live in channelview tx and I'm working in Wharton next door to this place so I decided to try it out . By the way I love soul food . Well my brother and I went for lunch on Sunday and I ordered the catfish dinner with Mac and cheese and a cornbread. Everything was made fresh and I loved everything about my dinner and the cornbread was AMAZING as well . Everything was AMAZING and delicious. The employees are so nice and the restaurant is very clean. I can't wait to go again for some smothered pork chops. Evelyn's soul food is definitely a place to go too if you've never been and you won't be disappointed. Hallelujah food for the soul . I'm telling you you'll have a revival with her cooking.

Oh my god, The Smothered Pork Chops plate was the bomb. Thin meat but packing some flavor that makes you wanna try it again. Left me wondering what else I want to try. The establishment and service were great, and the food was hot. If you want to try something fried, please call ahead. Alright, Evelyn, I'll declare it's recommendable and I'll stop by again.

This places gives you a nice momma's home-cooked meal vibes. I don't know if it's like this everyday, but when I went Ms. Evelyn and her family were all there. It was quite funny to hear them talk and make jokes and laugh, as if you were invited over for dinner. They knew their regulars well too, being able to state their orders before the patrons did. When we entered, we were greeted and asked for our orders at the food line. They had a few different entree options with sides and desserts available. I got the veggie plate with an extra side. Greens, corn, mac & cheese, green beans, yams, & cornbread. I enjoyed all of the veggies. The sweet corn was delicious and definitely my favorite. Hopefully I'll get to try them again on the days they're open.

Give Evelyn's Soul Food a try. If you are craving home style cooking, you won't be disappointed. You get huge portions. Family friendly

Fabulous. Anything here is good. I have too much integrity to bribe or kidnap Evelyn for recipes but believe me, I've been tempted.
