City Barbeque

Great Carolina BBQ chain. Got my flu and Covid shot next door at CVS, and couldn't resist a plate of outstanding BBQ.The aroma of the meat being smoke low and slow would bring anyone in that loved barbecue. The City BBQ I was most familiar with until I moved to Raleigh is across US-29 from UNC CHARLOTTE--that being said, City BBQ is more Carolina Western than Eastern style that is more dominant in Raleigh and points East. Lots of red sauces, not sure if I can find vinegar in this restaurant. Nonetheless, the meats and sides are outstanding. Now that we live in a world of "chicken only" and "mostly chicken" chains, I focus on pulled pork and beef brisket. Both outstanding. And the sides! One Eastern tradition that is at least in Raleigh (have to see if available in Charlotte) are hush puppies--Sheriff Justice made of had no time--but I always have time for hush puppies. And, I have only had fried okra as good as here at the South 29 restaurant (no longer there) in Charlotte. All Southern Seafood and/or BBQ restaurants have to have great Cole slaw, City BBQ is no exception. There Sweet Tea is just as Legendary as a certain chain that has the first two letters of my surname. I tend to do a hybrid Sweet/UnSweet mix nowadays--that combo here is delicious. They also have top notch lemonade. This is State chain, that I highly recommend.

Had the two meat sampler with two sides. For the meats, ordered the brisket and the chicken. For sides, got potato salad and Cole slaw. I found the brisket to be dry and chewy. The chicken was an odd pile of what looked like chicken salad. I don't think there was mayonnaise mixed in with the chicken, but the chicken glistened as if coated with some mayonnaise-type substance. It was off-putting. My dinner partner independently had the same impression: brisket was dry and the chicken had some mayonnaise-y appearance/texture that resembled a chicken salad. The potato salad was meh. The Cole slaw was good, not too much mayonnaise and a nice crunch. I liked the slice of toast that came with the platter. I will say the restaurant does have a nice variety of bbq sauces, from spicy/tangy to vinegary to sweeter side. The highlight of the meal was dipping the bread into the different sauces. Bottom line for me: I judge a bbq meal in part by how much I have to depend on the bbq sauces. In some joints, the brisket is moist and seasoned so no sauce is required. In this case, the brisket to me was dry and chewy and pretty tasteless - required lots of bbq sauce to provide both flavor and a moist feel. The chicken was better, but still needed sauce to provide flavor.

It was a rainy day, but needing to run a couple of errands in the area, I stopped in. I'm a big fan of their chicken and turkey, but I decided to go a little different direction. The Not Sloppy Joe stood out since it has 3 meats: pulled pork, pulled ribs, and brisket. They chop the meats up, so they have the consistency of a sloppy joe. Then they mix that in a unique BBQ sauce, that was called chipotle peach, but I got a lot more of the heat than the sweet. Then crispy onions and pickle slices finish it off. The toasted bun was just strong enough to not completely fall apart, but the battle was serious for a while.The baked beans are pretty good, maybe a bit saucy for my taste, but I like that they add brisket! I also liked that the mac has several cheeses. I added a little firecracker sauce to it and it works if you like some heat!The restaurant was kept pretty clean during a busy lunch rush, and that's not always easy to do. I also like the large vats of unsweet tea, sweet tea, and lemonade and the variety of BBQ sauces to choose from.

This new sandwich was absolutely delicious. Had everything you want in a chicken sandwich. I have fallen in love with their potato salad. Haven't bought the Mac n cheese since then and it's good. Their potato salad doesn't add the sweet fixings I use like relish and boiled eggs, but it's still savory enough with good flavor. I need to bring a pint home next time.

I had pulled pork and brisket with collards and fried okra. Everything but the pulled pork was very tasty. If they have an eastern Carolina sauce, I didn't see it. I think that would have made the bbq a bit better. Overall I liked it and would definitely recommend it if you're in the area.

Recently I tried ordering from City BBQ for dinner and really enjoyed the quality of the food and prices. I ordered the sampler, with mac & cheese and a banana pudding as my 2 sides. I enjoyed everything. The serving size was enough to have lunch the next day. The brisket, turkey and pulled pork were all tender and moist. My favorite being the brisket. The Texas toast was fresh, toasted and soft. I enjoyed the Mac & Cheese made with cavatappi noodles instead of elbow. It gave it texture and the dish was not overly salty. The banana pudding was also very good, just too sweet with added sugars. There were so many side dishes on the menu to choose from. I would definitely order and dine in again. Delicious barbecue.

Came here during a visit to rex hospital where there is no food. Located within walking distance to the west end of the hospital.Got a beef brisket sandwich with no bun, green beans and coleslaw. All of it came quickly and was hot. The drinks are self serve so I mixed sweet tea and lemonade. Excellent !!! The meat was cooked well and there were two big thick slices and a smaller slice. They have several different sauces to choose from and I liked the sweet and the original flavors. You order at the counter and they call your name and you pick up your tray. It was ready by the time I got my drink. The tables were all clean and the place was well lit and decor was uncluttered.I would return here. Wish I had found this place Friday. I would have been here every day since.

The cafe was closed at the museum so I ended up at City Barbeque as I hadn't been to the other location in a while. After the visit here, I remembered why. City Barbeque does not fulfill orders correctly. Had I remembered that, I would have checked my order before leaving. It wasn't busy at all and I didn't order much so I thought they could get the order right. I was wrong.Now the phone call to the restaurant was also disappointing. The phone number takes you to a call center somewhere not the actual restaurant. I was told I would need to get the City BBQ Rewards App to get the credit for the missing item. It seems they should be able to pull up the receipt and issue a credit to my credit card.After I insisted on my credit card getting refunded this was done but they needed the card number so I will closely be watching that as I don't trust this company. If you do carry out here, make sure to check your order before you leave.

the staff was fri and helpful. Even though we came when it was busy we still got good service and the food came out pretty fast, we good some bris and ribs and they were very good.

The service was amazing and the workers are so friendly, the food overall was amazing with the all sorts of drinks and food options. It is an amazing place to eat on your free time, with family and got party. This place has earned my 5 stars!!
