I was hoping to get something from the daily lunch menu, however they were closed for lunch, so I ending up in the build your own sandwich section. I got Whole wheat bread toasted with mayo, smoked turkey, Cheddar cheese, tomatoes, pickles, red onions, and lettuce. The serving size of turkey was a large, way bigger than you would ever get at Subway. Two slices of cheese. And for under $5 bucks, I enjoyed a great sandwich. Definitely coming back for more.

OK so here's a little history about this Cafe. During, the storm (Ike), They had security guards out front only letting in employees, patients, and family member of St. Luke's. I understand there is a storm going on but there are other people wanting hot food. Seriously? Guards out front? Employees of Texas Children's were not allowed to get food. What's sad is that cafe is supposed to be a joint one so it's not like we had another option. Anyways, ever since the storm basically the majority of the people at TCH have boycotted this cafe. However, I was in a hurry today and this was convenient. One thing I have learned in life convenience usually gets you in trouble, women, food, gas, etc... Like life, take your time and get what you want. Settling will get you nothing but trouble and a tummy-ache in this case.

Just purchased a ice cream bar for my family member. It is very hard to get a person not feeling well to eat and on top of that you have to deal with the checkout persons attitude. If you dont like your job leave. Not take it out on everyone else.

I saw the reviews of other Texas Medical Center hospitals' cafeterias, so I thought I'd give St. Luke's Bertner Avenue Cafe a shout out. Call me crazy, but I actually think it may be my favorite (even topping Methodist...?). It still only gets three stars because 1) it is, after all, a crowded, overpriced hospital cafeteria, and 2) the ambiance is terrible (it's in the basement, meaning no windows, no cell reception, and no escape from that ubiquitous scorched food/cleaning liquid scent). Also, the prices have continued to climb over my time at medical school, and lunch now runs at $6-8, which is not exactly cheap.However, the food is decent, in my experience. I would say the cafeteria has a soul food/southern food bent (although it certainly has the standard salad bar, pizza stand, and sushi cabinet that most places do). Even the Chinese food makes me think of the rodeo. I have to specifically mention the sweet potato pon (don't think about the butter in it) and the fish (which has always been good when I've had it, whether fried, blackened, or baked). I also am a fan of the soft serve machine. But, then again, I've never met ice cream I didn't like...

OK Bertner Ave. Cafe - I've been putting this review off for a long time. Unfortunately, my wife and I have been customers of St. Lukes for years. Here's the deal: two stars is all any hospital institutional cafeteria can hope for, right? So just expect that your food arrived at the hospital frozen in a box, and was heated hours ago and has been sitting on the steam table for some time. That's just the way it is. It is a hospital cafeteria.What amazes me most is the complete lack of healthy options (except of course for the over-priced salad bar). Occationally they'll have something that won't cause you to check yourself in to the heart institute immediately upon completion of the meal, but unfortunately, you can't count on it.However, the staff working at the grill can cook up a really good egg white omlet in the morning - something that is definately worthy of more than two stars, and at a very reasonable price.Since (especially at dinner) it's likely that everything within walking distance is closed, or you've already eaten it too many days in a row, just keep your expectations in check and make the best of it.

Not the best, but not terrible. I do like that it has a variety of things available. Unfortunately if you are at the hospital, then whatever food is available there will do. There are different stations available like a sandwich station and a grilled/fried station, a salad station, etc. On the weekend, not all stations are open. I tried the chicken sandwich at the grilled stations which wasn't bad, and I did enjoy the chicken tenders.There was another day that was Mardi Gras theme and they had special entrees/sides that day. I had shrimp and grits with rice, corn on the cob, and rolls on the side. They had stickers with bar codes for each side/entree for these special Mardi Gras ones. On another day, they were serving some Indian food entrees, but I did not try it. They had a lot of drinks available, including bottled water, juice and fountain drinks, and coffee. I did enjoy the coffee. When you first walk in, there is a cold fridge area with a lot of cold sandwiches, wraps, salads, snacks that are available and quick to grab. I never got these but they seem like a good choice for those in a hurry or not looking for a warm meal. They also had a variety of snacks available from bananas to muffins to chips, crackers, nuts. The plastic utensils are in the seating area section, and there were lots of sauce packets like mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, tartar sauce that are complimentary. Lots of seating available.

Hospital cafeterias have a difficult task and are usually under appreciated. In my own experience, they sometimes have mediocre food and sometimes serve very good food. I must say that they feature friendly and dedicated staff about 95% of the time.Today I had lunch here in the St Lukes cafeteria- which has gone by the name Bertner Street Cafe for many years. My $9 chicken piccata plate came with two sides, a roll, and a drink. They also offered two other specials today: grilled salmon and Salisbury steak.Staff members were all very nice.If you are having a loved one here in the hospital, this café is perfectly acceptable. (Of course there are several other choices nearby if you wish to leave the building.)

The staff is very unprofessional. From the cleaning staff, the cashiers, the manager T. J. , The MESSY African American women over the kitchen. I have met a few ladies that work behind the counter SERVING THE FOOD, I can and will pick them out if given the chance to. I also met a Caucasian Woman , she was very helpful. The other management staff is aloud to do things and aren't reprimanded because help is hard to find. Especially Good help.. I watched T.J. and the tall thin African American women do some undermined stuff today that just made me smile to myself. If I'm not telling the truth, so let me be. The credit machines were down. They think that everyone is stupid but them. T.J Don't let them get you into that mess. GOD SITS HIGH AND LOOKS LOW. Remember that. FYI , THE MANAGER FROM THE KITCHEN HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH WHAT WENT ON LAST NIGHT OR TODAY. She is probably trying to make sure you aren't on to her. Been in and out for 2 months now. The food is mediocre at best. Mostly stale and the attitude of the ones serving is by far the worst in the industry. They survive only by a captive audience lol.

The staff is rude, unprofessional, argumentative and discourteous. They seem completely ignorant to the fact that they are serving human beings, who more than likely are there for some dismal nature; instead they carry on as if they were slopping hogs on a farm. The food is tasteless and unappealing. By far, the worst hospital cafeteria I've ever experienced in every aspect. Do yourself a favor and walk to Methodist, Chipotle or ANY other restaurant in favor of this dump.
