Mediocre at best. I had high hopes for this sandwich shop which is situated directly off the freeway and attracts a far than less attractive crowd of bus hoppers and transients. Other than the ambiance being dirty and the staff unwelcoming, the food is very mediocre. I expected to find myself taking bites out an overstuffed flavorful sandwich and what I got was a Subway dupe. Do not let the internet fool you. This place is not a "deal" for a sandwich. Older pictures are being featured. The 8" sub runs you $9 where the giant is $18 not including drink or chips. Drove 45 min for a "great sandwich" and sadly was disappointed in every aspect. I do not recommend this shop.

Ate at American Hero last week while I was in Durham. Wanted something local and not chain. The outside could use a little TLC. Like a mower and some paint. Walked in and stepped back about 40 years. Solid sanitation score so I decide to give it a shot. I told the gentleman taking the order thatI had never been there and asked what I should get. He immediately said the #1; yup the Italian. My favorite. Got the veggies on the sub. Plenty of meat and delicious bread. Great portion. Delicious sandwich and very pleasant employees. Well done American Hero. Imagine what you could do if a little money was put into the building/property. I imagine a lot of people won't give it a try because of the appearance. I'll be back when I'm in Durham next!

Best subs in town! Not only is the bread and meat is always fresh, the staff great! Each time I've come here, owners were pleasant, areas were clean and food is consistent. The desserts are delicious as well.

I've been driving past American Hero for 2 years now (well, it will be 2 years in 10 days...but who's counting?) and have intended to try it. Well, today was that day.The appearance of the place is certainly lacking. It looks like the before picture of a Food Network fix-em-up episode. Not dirty; just unappealing. But, then the smell hits you. Or, at least, it hit me. The smell of a really good sandwich place. Kind of like the chain named after Mike from Jersey. My nose overruled my eyes, so I ordered.I had the #1 sandwich (ham, salami, capocolla, pepperoni & provolone cheese) on wheat, with Doritos and a diet soda. Hold the mayo, but I'll have some mustard please...and all the veggies. The sandwich could not have been better. It hit on every point. Fresh toppings, a good portion of meats, not too much mustard, and really good bread. And it was huge. Huge isn't a plus if the food isn't good, but in this case, it was so it was.I'll be back. And in less than 2 years.

Who picks up the phone and says we can order from inside the store? Do your job, take the order, you just lost $30 and a possible returning customer.

Great food at an even better price. Staff is very friendly and sandwiches hit the spot. Big fan of the Roast Beef. Cakes are delicious as well, have been coming back for the Beyond Chocolate cake.

I am so disappointed. Live their breakfast. I got a steak philly.meat and provolone extra cheese mayo. I hated the mayo ask for a redo, wich they do. This time no cheese. Go back asked for the cheese, the woman up front told the cashier she was not listening and not wanting to make the same sandwich over an over. I said that's fine I'll take my money back. They put white american cheese(I ordered provolone) and put hardley any on. I will never go back!!!

While traveling home from summer camp with 80 of my most favorite people in the world, our bus had a blow out on the interstate. Our drivers acted fast and professionally to move us to safety. We made our way off the interstate and into the parking lot of American Hero Restaurant. We were tired from a long week at camp, and this was the last thing we wanted. However, God had another idea. One of our leaders went in and explained our situation and we needed somewhere we felt our students would be safe and could wait for our replacement bus. Not only did they welcome us in, our students were able to be in doors out of the heat, they had a bathroom, a place for them to hang out AND the most amazing subs and desserts. This could have been a miserable experience for our students, but this business welcomed us in and made a crazy situation actually enjoyable. Our students respected the place, cleaned up after themselves and any other person that came in was given front of the line privileges. THANK YOU, American Hero Restuarant for being welcoming and showing our students kindness. We will tell everyone we know if they are ever in the Durham area, this place is a must stop. Your forever grateful friends from LibertyLive Church SFD, VA

This place is legit. Best sub I've had in a good, long while, and they're HUGE! The restaurant looks a little sketch from the outside, but it's clear the money goes into the quality and not the decor.

This is my new go-to sandwich shop. Honest to God, this is the best Italian sub I've had outside of New York, and even then, it gives NY a run for the money. You can tell the business has been there for years; it's no-frills because it doesn't need to be. They're putting their money where your mouth is. Don't let the exterior or the neighborhood detract you-- seriously, this place was probably there well before N. Roxboro became a dive. If you're the kind of person who cares more about what a place looks like on the outside than the quality of the food inside, you're probably a shallow out-of-towner, and there are plenty of trendier places for you around town. If you're looking for a good sub with the perfect balance of ingredients and not the result of a heavy-handed minimum wage employee, this is your place. It literally is a family-owned business. While another reviewer said "the staff can be a little scary," I find the absolute opposite to be true. Yes, the older staff are a little quiet, but the young guy is nothing but friendly, with a smile on his face (before he pops his mask on). I literally have gotten their subs 3 times in the past two weeks, which should probably tell you something (about the shop, not me-- well, ok, maybe a little about me too).
