I felt like I'd stepped back in time when I walked into this place today. The owners were so friendly, and their service and hospitality was absolutely delightful, Their food isn't exactly soul food as I expected it to be, but it's served hot and with a smile. I had their fried chicken, mashed potatoes and gravy, fried okra and black eyed peas and my daughter got the chicken and dumplings, macaroni and cheese and green beans. I did expect the food to taste more "soul-ish", but it filled us up and it wasn't as outrageously expensive as the "other soul food place" just a few blocks around the corner is!. No it wasn't the best place to get soul food, nor the most updated, as alot of that areas is, but we enjoyed ourselves overall and felt we'd had a memorable and quintessential experience that was more important than just the food. So I'm rating Walt's Grill with a 4 rating! Thank you so to the owners for keeping this old timey place open in a fast changing world where restaurants like this almost cease to exist anymore.

It feels like you're in someone's filthy house but the food is incredible. True southern comfort food done right. The ribs portion was maybe a little small. But they were perfect and fell off the bone.

Great Food. Homemade real food. I say again. Real food. I had Beef tips and rice, with pinto beans and mashed potatoes and a sweet tea.Nothing about free range , or grass fed , or fair trade. Again, real food like Grandma's.

I normally do not review places where I get delivery but since they did not have much feedback, thought I would. Walt's has a very appealing menu of southern comfort food. I had the turkey wings with sides of fried okra, collards and green beans. The wing was good, fall of the bone with nice flavor. Although just one wing, it was enough for lunch. The true standout for me was the fried okra, which I thought was prepared perfectly. I also liked the green beans and collards, but it was the okra that was special. I plan to order from them again.

Stopped in and ate after passing by, had to pull a u turn, just by the look of it could tell it was going to fire. Order the beef ribs with collards and mashed potatoes and gravy. A+++ all around. Places like this don't open any more, excellent food and service.

Walt's broke my heart. Exactly the type of place I like to try: a small local establishment serving food with a local flavor; Walt's promised a lot.Small and off the beaten path: check. Floor tiles worn, torn in parts, and uneven: check. Scuffed walls with a hodgepodge of local memorabilia and announcements: check. Television in the corner with an over the air network focusing on local sports: check. A whiteboard with a hand written menu of the day's offerings: check. Locals discussing their various interests, news of the day, who cheated at cards the day before, and general joking around: check. Food served on unadorned plates and with plastic utensils: check. The occasional chipped coffee mug: check. Simple, basic, no-frills food at a price that's a steal: check. Employees that make you feel like a member of the family: double check. Five stars for those delivered promises.Walt's nearly has it all, and teases you with it, the cad. But alas, my heart is broken owing to Walt's recent sanitation scores. Despite my disappointment, I'm still giving two stars because of the promises which Walt's does deliver well. And also because of my hope Walt's will unceremoniously dump those rude, heartless, selfish scores into the fires of perdition for daring to interfere with my affection for everything that Walt's promises but hasn't quite achieved.

Best comfort food spot on Franklin and relatively unknown. The crowd was a group of friendly regulars playing cards and the owner, Walt's son, was a great host. The fried chicken, ribs, and potato salad were to die for and the service was great. Everyone at the restaurant, customers and employees, was welcoming, and the food was only $7.50 a plate. We will definitely be back!

Unbelievable that this has one review. 100 yards from Franklin Street but worlds away. A historic meat and three type of spot. We got the fried chicken, a side of culture, friendliness unmatched, ice tea, Carolina blue surroundings and unbelievable hush puppies. All for 7 bucks, incl tax! Id say 95% of Chapel Hill doesn't know this place exists.. But they should. Go here instead of Mama Dips if you really want the southern experience. Go go go. Cash only, decent parking, friendly service and awesome food!

Great food. It was hot and fresh and seasoned just right. Prompt friendly service. Atmosphere you'd expect for any meat and three worth visiting. Plastic plates and utensils. Fresh brewed iced tea. A regular came in, greeted by name and ordered breakfast during lunch service. My kind of place. They're open Sunday's until 6pm. Yelp said it was closed.

The food was wonderful for that genre and for food in general. Ordered delivery and it arrived still hot. Good seasonings, loved the breading on the fried chicken. Plan on ordering again soon. Recommend this to all.
