We tried the pork siopao ($4), corned beef and beef asado($4), hopya monggo (yellow bean), hopya ube (purple yam, 4 for $5.25), pandan tart (3 for $6), ube coffee cake (8 slices for $9), ube Oreo tiramisu slice ($5). There is so much selection! I was able to try so much because we went twice! The pork siopao had a flavorful, tender filling. The bun is more wheat colored and less sweet than your typical chinese sweet bread. The Monggo were fun to eat! Similar to desserts we eat on Chinese new year, where there are thin flaky crusts surrounding a bean paste filling. The pandan tart did not have that much pandan flavor, would not get it again. The ube coffee cake was so delicious! One of my favorite. You could taste the ube. It was very moist. The butter crumb was a nice touch. The ube oreo tiramisu was fun to try! On the sweeter side. It seems like a family owned business. It is in a plaza with other Filipino restaurants and supermarkets. Very clean inside!

Thanks to my Yelper friend Clynton M's review that drew my attention to The Baker's Son by Valerio's. I absolutely love everything about this bakery. It's located at the newly-built storefront of Pinoy Corner in the Medical Center area. I came here one day after my doctor's appointment. There weren't many people at the restaurant. So, I took my time to browse everything. I could smell the ube baking aroma from the moment I opened the door. I spent about $45 on all kinds of goodies. I love the sampling trays. I got to taste a variety of Kakanin (sticky rice snacks) without buying several boxes. Another thing I love about how it operates is there are 2 different sizes of packaging, big and small. So, I don't waste anything. I only want few pieces of pastries. The small box would do just fine.p.s. I uploaded 40 photos to go with my review. You need to use a computer see them all https://www.yelp.com/biz_photos/the-bakers-son-by-valerios-houston?userid=jwPVqdHpVHCBfAe4pZBbgA

I was in town for the holidays and convinced my sister to make the drive to The Baker's Son with me to stock up on Filipino goodies that I can't find in Austin. This place did not disappoint! They have a wide selection of pastries, desserts, and drinks as well as helpful staff and plenty of parking. We originally came here for the kakanin platter, which included puto, sapin sapin, palitaw, kutsinta, and puto bumbong - a little bit of everything! Everything tasted exactly as it should. My only two complaints were the puto with flan as those should definitely be separate dishes, and the puto bumbong that was drowning in coconut flakes and didn't include enough butter. We ended up walking out with a lot more pastries from the sheer nostalgia of it all. The plain bibinka was missing the cheese chunk on top, but it was still sweet, airy, and fluffy even after refrigerating and microwaving. The siopao was a pleasantly hefty portion with nicely seasoned pork inside. The ensaymadas were sweet and filling. The hopia tasted like hopia. I'll definitely be back to satisfy my Filipino pastry and sweet tooth craving!

The bakery itself is nice and clean and small but not cramped! The staff is kind and I love that you can see them baking goods! Almost everything we got was a hit, I think the ones we didn't enjoy were more traditional Filipino treats that we weren't used to. All three tres leches we had were amazing (mango, biscoff, and ube Oreo). My favorite items were the ube piaya and ube hopia, both had a flaky pastry element. The bread itself is like a pillowy dinner roll and the milky cheese bread is the perfect salty sweet combo. I also ordered the buke pandan drink and I've never had anything close to that flavor (in a good way). I will definitely return to this place for more goodies!

I've been to a couple of Asian bakeries but never a Filipino bakery. Not familiar with Fillipino cuisine either but I'm adventurous enough to try.Beef empanada - 5/5It's more sweet than savory but juicy and decently sweet. The way they made the pastry is different than other empanadas. I enjoyed it and would get it again.Chicken empanada - 2/5It was too sweet for me. It looked baked. I wouldn't get it again.Ube brownies - 5/5Love the flavor, moistness, and that it isn't too sweet! It has an earthy flavor that reminded of 7 leaves Taro milk tea.

Ube everything!! I wish the Ube milk bread had some filling but otherwise a great place to get Filipino bakery items for a good price. Love the emphasis on Ube!

The first Filipino bakery we've ever been to, we were excited to try everything! We picked up various bread and of course, their famous calamansi juice and halo halo. Most of the bread we chose had ube in it, which we love. The ube cheese bread was very good. Powdered ube on top with a creamy cheese filling. Loved their halo halo. Ube ice cream with red bean, jelly, little ice bits, coconut milk, cereal flakes, etc. It was sp refreshing on a super hot and humid day. The calamansi juice was also very refreshing. It was a bit too sweet at first but once the ice melted a bit, it was just perfect!Overall, great bakery with lots of options to choose from. This is a must if you are in Houston!

Listen even if purple isn't your favorite color lol, you should still give this place a try! I love Ube, so I knew going in what to expect, but even so I was genuinely pleased with my Ube Shake! I also got the Ube cheese bread which was like eating an even better Hawaiian roll if you can believe it!!! So light and fluffy and while I didn't have room for it I still ate it because it was just that delicious!! I bought a couple of other things that I am yet to try, but I'll update once I do I just can't eat another thing today!! The ladies were genuinely lovely and friendly, and quick to answer any questions we had! The store is cute and clean and well stocked! They brought out a few warm food options you could grab on the go for lunch or a light snack! I will definitely be back on a day when I have more of an appetite!

I ended up here looking for another bakery. Went to both and this one was way better. I should have gone to this one first. It's bright and very clean and everyone was super helpful. The empanadas were really good. They were just under 3.50. The buns were super soft and tasty. I would definitely go back and get more items. I wouldn't mind trying the cheese garlic bread.

Since their neighbor, Jollibee, stopped carrying halo halo, I had to find another spot to buy it. Luckily, the closest place to find it was only steps away! TBS' halo halo is truly delicious, but has a pretty steep cost to it coming in around $7/$8 for one. I haven't tried much of their other items here, but they all look very tasty. I did recently try their Carioca balls which tasted like coconut - those were really good! They serve them on a skewer and wrap them in foil. This establishment requires that you spend $10 or more if you plan on using a credit card, which is why I ended up trying the Carioca.I will add that this bakery is SUPER clean inside. Like amazingly clean. I am always impressed when I come in since it's always so spotless! It's nice to see that establishments actually care what their customers see!
