I appreciate South Square Market because it carries name brand items that I can't find at some of the other markets in the area. They often have a good produce selection too! My boyfriend likes the selection of meats at the deli counter. My experience with the staff here has always been positive. Their COVID precautions have been great too. This is a smaller grocery store, so they are often out of items and have a smaller selection. It's usually my go-to when I want to put together a cheeseboard and need some items last minute.

Always have "everything you need"!! Never truly crowded. Provides jobs for locals. Deli stand makes custom sandwiches + tubs of freshly prepared foods (e.g. macaroni salad, coleslaw, chicken or ham or shrimp salad, meatballs in sauce et cetera!).

Alright, so this place bothers me ALOT bc it thinks it owns the monopoly in this area and so it can jack up the prices on goods and the quality is quite shoddy. But since it is the only market within like a 1 mile radius, it can do whatever it wants. I try not to write scathing reviews about places as a Yelp Elite, but after traveling around a lot and having to come back to this place over and over again in Philly, it hurts the soul to where I'll actually bring groceries from wherever I'm from rather than pay the $$ for the food here. Price: Ridiculous. Compare the prices to Miami, ATlanta, Chicago, etc this place wins for HIGHEST prices. Even the Whole Foods down the street ain't this pricy and the quality is actually good. Deals? Barely. But if you go in the morning you may be able to get yourself some of the manager's special half off deals ;) for example, a tub of Danon vanilla yogurt, at its prime price in downtown Miami is 2 for 6$. This place is like 4$.... and milk is like 5 for a gallon of blah blah brand milk. Quality: Are you kidding me? Food spoils quickly for its price. Produce is not that great. We've gotten things where 2 days later it's totally gross. Service: Sympathy patronage I tell you. They probs feel bad they are jacking up the prices and the quality of food so the staff are wondrously friendly. They use paper bags though, but maybe the $$ they make from this place goes to buying those fancy paper bags :P Options: Eh it's a small store so you can't get that much in variety. I recommend the Acme down the street if you are willing to bike a mile down. Otherwise, if you're a student or professional and dont' have time, your'e really stuck with this gas guzzler of a place. I recommend management or the owners re evaluate their business goals a little

Admittedly, South Square has not always been my favorite grocery store, however, I am definitely a fan of how they are handling safety and sanitation during the COVID-19 pandemic. From the very beginning, this store had a sanitation station set up outside for their shopping carts. Inside, there are wipes and also barriers between customers and employees at the check-out lines. These steps are greatly appreciated! In addition, South Square was stocked on several household items that we haven't been able to find elsewhere for weeks. We were able to secure our preferred laundry detergent, along with a large container of Lysol wipes, among a handful of other items. I also have to admit, when I can't find a basic household item at the newer nearby grocery store, I have almost always been able to track it down at South Square. They can be pricey, and I don't love all of the departments, but this neighborhood staple definitely serves a purpose.

I always come here as it's continent for me and I like the products they stock. However, time and time again I find myself leaving disappointed from unfriendly conversation with the cashiers.Edit: after reading other reviews, it seems like this has been an ongoing issue for years.....

Great local business. Friendly people and ample supply. Can get everything I need here at a good price.Edit: just a comment on the staff. No one has ever been rude to me and I've never had any problems, but I don't expect to pass the time of day with the staff. Maybe some people who write these reviews are from the Midwest--but honestly if you go to CVS or Acme around here I kind of doubt anyones going to ask you how you're doing. Honestly I don't mind and if the staff has fun talking to each other why would we want them not to? I doubt they make much money.

I quite literally feel driven out of the store by a few consistently rude employees in the check out line. For years I' e tried to avoid the bad ones, by getting in a different line, but occasionally it's unavoidable and today was one of those days. I'live i. The neighborhood, value independent stores, and have been a reliable customer for 25 years but I'm not putting up with the overt rudeness and hostility any more. A quick trip for 5 items in a quiet, empty store should not ruin my day. So very sour. Giant here I come.the single star is because these employees stay and don't change year after year. Otherwise I've been a fab.

Generally a good store that provides needed basic service for the community, this market unfortunately sometimes succumbs to rudeness by its employees. Most of them are courteous, but today an older, balding cashier motioned another customer to go ahead of me in line, even though I was next, with no explanation whatever. Maybe there was a good reason that I simply didn't understand, but no explanation was offered. I have heard complaints about rudeness from this store in the past, but today saw it firsthand.
