Sawaya Brothers Tortilleria

We spent Christmas in San Diego this past year again. We arrived a few days early, so we went to the Sawaya Brothers Tortilleria to pick up tamales for the holidays. We usually make our tamales at home every year, but this year it was too much with my baby. It's easier to support a local business and take a break from cooking those too. I bought all four kinds they had that day, chicken, beef, pork and rajas (roasted poblano peppers and cheese). They are huge tamales, well wrapped and were made fresh. Absolutely delicious!I also bought fresh tortillas, cheese and spices to go along with my tamales. The tortillas were still hot and fresh when I bought them. Mmmmm!

I went around the time they say it opens and it was closed they should fix the hours online they might even permanently closed not sure

This place has been around since I was a little girl. I have a lot of memories coming here with my grandma to pick up groceries. Not the cleanest market but def authentic and you'll find everything you need. Best of all is their tortillas.

We went here to get some fresh tortillas. We arrived before they opened, we couldn't find the entrance. A man came out and spoke with my boyfriend and handed him a free pack. We couldn't come back later as we were driving back home to north county. I hope to come back one day to go inside and try the food. Great customer service!!

Just DELICIOUS and inexpensive. I got here with roughly 20 people in line and it felt like 15 minutes. Well worth the drive from Lemon Grove. Also you can pick up groceries but I mainly came for the hot food, carnitas package and birria package.

Always a pleasure, I go for their deli. Their food tastes just like out of your mom's kitchen. Love it.

This place looks like an eye sore from the outside but hot damn if you don't stop by this hole in the wall yoU are doing your self an injustice. This place has hella cheap, hella bomb, hella smoked bbq that will make you wanna punch Barney the purple dinosaur square in the nose and upper cut the other stuffed dinosaur. Order the 1/2 smoked chicken and you'll just about have a seizure from your taste buds exploding into heaven. This place also has some of the best tamales in all of San Diego (pollo verde) Goddam makes me want blast through a wall like the kool aid man just thinking about it. Anytime I'm in a 10 mile radias i just let my car gravitate toward this place. I drive a Kia and I let go of the steering wheel because my car turns into a Tesla anytime the engine inhaled and puffs the aromatics of the sweet and savory bbq that this place billows out.

Very good tasting tacos. Owners and staff very nice. This place gets busy but doesn't disappoint.

Amazing market with lots of different mexican food options, their food is amazing don't get fooled by the looks of it!!!

It's like a hole in the wall. Authentic Mexican food. I like spicy tamales on banana leaves. These are perfect for me and my family.
