Ran in to get a last minute cake the day of, didn't have much selection out (other than chocolate, chocolate, chocolate & a fruit cake), which is a good and bad thing -- good being that it probably means they make their cakes fresh so it's best to preorder them and schedule a pick up, bad because last minute people like me will wish that we should've called in for place an order. I ended up getting an 8" fruitcake, it was good. Can't go wrong with a simple fruit cake! & the fruits tasted super fresh & delicious! Store is small and cute. Workers there were friendly and answered all my questions. They also have baked goods like buns and other desserts that you can buy too!

I love their pastries! I always come for the bbq pork buns, the egg tarts, and some other speciality buns. I even had slices of their fresh fruit cakes, which are airy, soft, not too sweet frosting loaded and loaded fresh fruits!I somehow end up coming here almost every other weekend!

You know how much I love Simply Cake? I live in Marin County and get my birthday cakes from Simply Cake. That's not to say we don't have amazing bakeries, we do. It's just that Simply Cake makes cakes that I love. One that we've ordered twice now is their Vanilla Crunch Cake. Vanilla sponge cake, whipped cream frosting and filling and a very thin layer of chocolate in between, topped with fresh diced fruit. They are a work of art. Also, the cakes are not cloyingly sweet, they are just right. You can get them in a variety of sizes and considering the quality and presentation the prices are amazingly low. They'll also include small paper plates, forks and a cute little cake spatula. Another treat that I love is their Hokkaido cream dessert. The best I can describe it is similar to angel food cake with vanilla cream at the bottom. The service is great as well. Helpful, kind and efficient. I always make sure to tip well as they deserve it.In addition to cakes they also have a fantastic variety of other baked goods, sweet and savory. My husband loves their savory items so when I'm there I get several and freeze them for later.Go in, get your tray and tongs and take your time browsing. Happiness guaranteed.

Pastries are 4 stars because they're pretty well-priced for being in DT SM, and the little details and ambiance bump it up to 5 stars. Service is generally friendly. I think it's nice that you get the candles, little plates, little forks, and a nice display cake box with a full cake. The actual cake design is traditional Chinese bakery style but they've modernized the packaging. Their logo is on all their stuff, and they don't skimp, including the coffee cups which have a super sturdy plastic lid that has a mechanism emulating reusable coffee cups. Hope they're raking it in like their wheat "S" logo suggests ($!). Definitely also appreciate the cleanliness of the place, available seating, and stable WiFi. I think the layout for getting pastries then going to the middle of the store away from the cash register feels a little counterintuitive and I'm still training my mind to get in line to center of the store after I loop around all the baked goods and the cash register is just right there.I'm always looking for spots with Hong Kong milk tea; Simply Cake's is solid. Well, their yin yeung is, anyway. HK milk tea is a specific craving and I don't know where else I'd find it in DT SM (a real version anyway, not the inauthentic versions that some boba places offer; before finding this HK milk tea here, I would just get a chai at Urban Momo). Their HK pineapple bun though is a bit too soft for me. The pineapple lava one is not a favorite either. I'll try the pineapple overload next. But the raisin milk bread was a pleasant surprise. It was sort of like a cocktail bun with raisins. Liked the ratio of filling and topping/crust. For the cake - I personally am partial to the dense, moist cakes like Susie Cakes but I come to Simply Cake for family functions. It's always a hit with folks that like Chinese bakery cakes (highest praise for cake being "not too sweet" of course), but Simply Cake edges out other bakeries because at family events we usually end up getting asked where the cake came from (in detail).

Nice place. Not a lot of place to dine in, and it's mostly to go. It's a smaller version of Paris Baguette or Tour de Jours, but glad they have it available in DTSM. Busy during the weekend when I came, but lines moved quickly. Good selections of ready made cakes that are Asian style spongy type of cakes. Service was nice. Metered Parking at front. Cheers!

We came back again for another birthday! This time we ordered another mixed fruit cake! Honestly, they did not disappointed and we loved it as much as the first one we tried! The cake was moisted and not too sweet! The fruits were sweet and tasted great with the cake and the cream! This time, they served half a sweet mango on the top, which was pretty impressive with just the presentation. This time, we also picked up some pastries to try. It tasted great, but I have never seen another bakery charges baging fee for their individual breads/ small cake pastries. The charge was only 25 cents total, but I thought that was odd. How else were you supposed to take the pastries home?

Not-so-sweet custom cakes! I've been tired of the same ol' places for asian bakeries, so I'm glad I found Simply Cake! I called in to order 2 cakes just a few days prior to pick up. Everyone thoroughly enjoyed it and the size was perfect. I've tried some of their pastries before but it's kind of pricey compared to other places. The location is perfect, in the heart of downtown San Mateo. I'd choose Simply Cake over others around the area.

We were very happy with the Tiramisu cake that we ordered from here. It came with alot of fruit and had nice cocoa notes! Also tried a few of the pastries including a hot dog bun and ham and egg bun. Both were excellent and brought back fond memories as I used to eat these types of buns after school. Service is great and establishment is great. Will definitely be back to try all the other items they have to offer.

This is our favorite place to go for years! Their cakes and buns are super popular; the place is packed on weekends. They have contactless payment, and it is very fast and efficient. They have a unique selection of bread and desserts; they do have some variations on tarts too! Their cakes are wonderfully spongy and moussey. They have the right balance like 50/50 weight distribution between cake and mousse. Thing is it isn't as heavy with cream, and so it isn't overly sweet. It matches the palate of many a demographique - t'es magnifique!

I was drawn into the simple and clean interior at first, but couldn't pass the Hokkaido milk filled pastries. So many good looking pastries. Most of them are classics with a modern twist. I picked up a few items with key ingredients: Hokkaido milk, walnut, and sweet potato buns(sorry, couldn't remember their names). Love the rich milky flavor, quality ingredients, yet not overly sweet. I came around 6pm on a Friday. There was a small line but moves quickly. The staffs are friendly and attentive. I was so tempted to get a bunch of their pastries and cakes, but girl gotta have self-control. Can't wait to come back and try more!
