Jacqueline Z. "A vegan place that really knows how to season! Came here on a Wednesday evening as a party of 4. Did not have to wait since there were a few empty tables. They started us off with some sort of celery soup with pumpkin seeds, which was good and kinda had the consistency of baby food. Then, I got to try the following:- Curried Cauliflower (4/5): The cauliflower is seasoned well and the red sauce paired with the cauliflower is great. - Mushroom Zeppole (4.5/5): The texture of the mushroom is amazing. I don't usually like mushrooms but this surprised me. The mayo aioli sauce paired well with the dish as well. - Spicy Yellow Curry (5/5): So good! It's not that spicy but it's packed with flavor. The portion was large as well. For drinks, I got a Strawberry Bloom Martini, which looked nice but was so strong on the alochol. It had a nice fruity aroma to it but I couldn't get past how strong and prominent the spirit was. For dessert, we ordered a Warm Chocolate Cake. The cake was a bit dry, probably due to lack of eggs. The ice cream was good and the chocolate avocado ganache and banana were delicious. We were trying to guess where the avocado was and could barely tell that it was part of the ganache! If you're looking for a vegan restaurant or just want to be surprised by how much flavor can be packed in a dish, I'd recommend this spot! The service was also good. Just a heads up that they do have a 4% charge for employee benefits but it is mentioned in fine print on their menu."

I never knew spring garlic could have so much flavor and complement the pasta and the tender wagyu meat. The pizza was amazing as well, but I didn't enjoy the Funghi pizza as much. The clash of flavours was overwhelming. I opted for a lighter dessert option after indulging in carbs, as the desserts at this establishment are exceptional. The gelato and sorbet will definitely help with that, and it is delicious! Great spot for date night!"

I love that they use what's in season--it adds to the quality and flavor. The presentation is absolutely gorgeous, and the pricing reflects that level of detail. The restaurant can get pretty packed since it's located at the end of Santana Row, but you can always make a reservation to secure a spot. John G. "I've been wanting to try this place since they opened in downtown San Mateo and my first experience wasn't a pleasant one. Back in 2023, I had emailed them to reserve a table for 12 people for a celebration reunion with my classmates from the Philippines. Thought this restaurant it would be ideal (for obvious reasons), but nobody ever got back to me. Even calls to speak with the manager went nowhere. I had to reserve another venue, and I finally received a response from them after the planned reunion. In a nutshell, the excuse given was they were busy and will use it as a learning experience.Water under the bridge so moving on, I decided to take the Wifey here for dinner back in November of last year with the two dogs in tow. We didn't have reservations, so the only option was to dine on their parklet. We didn't mind the cold, as long as we had a nice heater to keep us warm. We ordered the following:Pork Sisig ($27 with egg +$2) Seasoned pork, chopped and sauteed with spices on a sizzling plate. Looking at the picture, let me state the obvious: the egg yolk was already broken, and it was already cooked. They didn't even allow us the experience of mixing the egg with the rest of the dish, and the taste was mid at best. The texture of the pork was also flossy as it wasn't the typical sisig that I'm used to. Crispy Pata ($39.50) They describe it as crispy on the outside, juicy and tender on the inside. All true, but at this price point, I wanted it to wow me. It was lacking in flavor, and it was cooked inconsistently with some chunks of meat being too hard. Nothing too special, and you can get a similar dish at other Filipino restaurants at half the price. Sinigang ($11) Veggies and broth only. This hits the spot as the sourness of the broth was just right and it warmed us on a cold, chilly night. Pinakbet ($23) Stir-fried string beans, eggplant, bittermelon, okra, squash, shrimp, pork, shrimp paste and topped with chicharrones. This was the best-tasting food among the dishes that we ordered. All the ingredients complemented each other as it was well-balanced. As far as service goes, it was also inconsistent as we were initially told that we could sit at a table near the door but then changed it to the parklet as that table was reserved. Our server also changed (understandable) that caused us to wait on a request that we had to repeat. All in all, there were hits and misses and a mix bag of everything else from my very first experience to the most recent one. I'm still giving them 3 stars, and that's being generous since I want them to improve, be more consistent and be better. Hopefully on our next visit."

Shane J. "Café Pro Bono - A Classic Italian Spot with a Loyal FollowingCafé Pro Bono is an older, classic Italian restaurant with a clear sense of community. The clientele seems well-established--by the time we were leaving, regulars were chatting with the owner, asking about his family as if it were a weekly tradition. It's the kind of place where everyone knows each other, which gives it a warm, familiar charm. When we asked for recommendations, we got the classic "it's all good" response. And while everything was good, nothing stood out as great. We tried Susan's Downfall, a delicious ravioli dish topped with a rich Gorgonzola-based cream sauce--easily the highlight of the meal. The Tagliatelle with Smoked Chicken was also excellent, with perfectly cooked pasta and well-balanced flavors. For dessert, we had Bertucci's Favorite, a simple but satisfying vanilla gelato with a boozy berry compote that was just the right way to end the meal. Although- we were brought a delicious port after dessert. What a kind classic touch!Overall, Café Pro Bono is a solid, classic Italian joint that delivers good food in a welcoming setting. However, to stay relevant long-term, I'd love to see them modernize the experience a bit or develop a signature dish that truly sets them apart. Every great restaurant should have at least one thing it's famous for--right now, they do a lot of things well, but nothing exceptionally."

"I'm pretty sure this was here when I was living in UC 4 years ago, and now I'm mad at myself that I never knew of this place back then.My brother and hubby stopped in for late lunch reservations on a Wednesday and it was pretty empty, wait it was very empty with just one other table with a customer. I was a little worried but more shocked. My immediate impression walking in, I thought this restaurant has a nice interior, welcoming vibes but I was concerned there was no one here eating. Julian, our server was amazing from the start. Very personable, almost like he was an AI/robot, lol jk. He provided exceptional customer service without being overly helpful. For foods, we ordered two appetizers: crab cakes (bro's fav) and the aguachile. Both dishes were so good, I was excited to what was going to come out for our main dishes. The Aguachile had the perfect amount of spiciness with the Serrano sliced peppers and the shrimp marinating in a sour lime juice with spices. Wow, delicious stuff. Now for the mains, I went with the spicy pasta, hubby tried the Cajun pasta and my brother opted for the lobster/crab sandwich. Presentation was on point, really pretty plated dishes! Portions were pretty big, I would say two people can share the pasta dishes, needless to say I had leftovers, so yay me! I was just so satisfied with everything that we ate. From the flavors to the presentation, *chef's kiss good! Customer service, great; Ambiance welcoming and clean. I would 100% come back for a second visit and so should you. The chicks on the sticks (chicken satay) was also a hit. I also ordered the Panang curry w/beef. The Panang curry has a nice blend of sweet and savoriness to it. For drink, I ordered the Thai tea and it was delicious. The service here was really good as well. My waitress Bella gave me a great rundown of the menu, was attentive in checking in, and often refilled my water. The restaurant itself is small but it is very nicely decorated. "This was my second--and likely last--visit to Left Bank. Here's what we ordered: * Prawns Provençale: Tasty, but $20 for just five pieces felt overpriced. * Beef Bourguignon: Full of flavor and worth returning for. * Pork Chop: The waiter recommended this dish to my wife and mentioned it would include two slices of pork chop. However, she was served only one--and it was overcooked. We initially thought the waiter might have misspoken, but later, we saw another patron served two slices. When we pointed this out to the waiter, he responded, "Oh, the cook made a mistake, but you should have told me earlier--now I can't do anything." There was no apology, discount, or offer of a complimentary dessert, as many other restaurants would provide when mistakes happen. The only highlight was the live jazz band playing during our visit. Without that, it would have been a thoroughly disappointing experience."

Parking is a bit of a nightmare (surprise surprise!), so try to arrive a bit early to account for that.We started off with 3 appetizers. The Farro salad was really refreshing, the Arancini were tasty and filled with melty cheese and a creamy sauce, and the meatballs were so smooth and flavorful--one of the best meatballs I've had!The Funghi pie and the NYC pepperoni pizza were not bad, nothing super memorable, though. My only gripe with the pepperoni pizza is that the dispersement of the pepperoni was not well executed. You can see in the picture that most of the pepperoni got placed on 1/2 the pizza which meant some people did not get much pepperoni on their slice :( And sadly... I was that person who only got 2 pieces of pepperoni *crying face*We also ordered 2 pastas: the Bolognese and the Vodka Diavolo. My mom really enjoyed the Bolognese and the rest of us really enjoyed the Vodka Diavolo! And lastly, we ordered the Tiramisu and Ricotta cake. Just a warning, the Tiramisu lady fingers were hard--we weren't expecting to feel resistance when cutting it with our spoons! But when we asked the waitress she explained that it was supposed to be flaky and not super soft. And we came for brunch last weekend because we had a gift certificate, and before that it was probably a few years between visits. But we really need to come more often. At our previous visit we had the Sixteen Mile Deviled Eggs to start and each egg had a different fun little protein topping. I loved the one with steak and the smoked salmon. Presentation was lovely.Today we ordered the Swedish pancake starter. There was a berry syrup drizzle which was not my kind of thing, too candy-like, but my husband liked it. The lingonberry butter was very nice.My husband got their Kobe Loco Moco both visits because it was so delicious. The Kobe patty was cooked perfectly. The gravy was amazing; I kept trying to figure out what made it so good--maybe a French onion kind of flavor? So deeply beefy with notes of caramelized onion. Last visit I got Sixteen Benedict, because filet mignon is always a good choice, which was good in theory. I thought the sauce was too thick but the flavor was good. The little bit of sprouts on top helped balance the richness but I would've enjoyed more sprouts or greens to balance. The side dish was tater tots and they were very crispy. Today I had Stable Steak & Eggs because I love steak. The 6 oz ribeye was perfectly char grilled. I could've used some seasoning. Eggs were good. Tater tots were consistently crispy and tasty. Both times, I took home most of my tots and my daughter immediately devoured them.My husband had to take home half of his loco moco each time because it was a huge quantity. And he actually ate the leftovers, which is a big deal because he usually forgets about his restaurant leftovers and doesn't eat them.To summarize, the star is definitely Kobe Loco Moco. Everything else is good, but I can't get that Loco Moco out of my head."

"Dark SideThe brainchild of local restaurateur Darren Matte, who's other projects include Danville Harvest and SF's Per Diem, Parkside is looking to bring fresh, local farm-to-table dining to Downtown Los Gatos. Housed in the former Le Boulanger (RiP), Parkside's décor is classy and elegant, and has a decidedly New American menu with a little Italian thrown in for flair. The Good:*Reservations thru OpenTable *Very romantic ambiance and would be a terrific place for a date night. *Happy Hour Seven Days a week (3 p.m. - 5 p.m.)*Outdoor parklet dining with heaters *Reasonable amount of gluten-free food on the menu that's*Service by Lexi was outstanding. She was fast, efficient, and personable. The staff as a whole was really good. Not Michelin good, but better than your average restaurant. *I enjoyed the seasonal butternut squash soup, and if you want to share a bowl they can split one serving into two bowls. *Great Bar scene*Carissa raved about her Horseradish Salmon--and she doesn't even like horseradish! But the fish was cooked well and the horseradish flavor was pleasant and not overwhelming. *I enjoyed my fried chicken, despite the white meat being slightly overcooked. The skin/crust was crispy and full of flavor, and the concomitant mashed potatoes & gravy were a reminder of Turkey Day to come...The Meh:*Street Parking in DTLG can be a hassle Fri-Sun, but the rest of the week you should be pretty good to go. There are some lots nearby, as well, but make sure to read the signage.*"Substitution politely declined," per the menu. Make of that what you will, I'm not really a substitution kinda guy but if you are you're SoL.*They *seem* to have a decent selection of vegetarian/vegan items but, unlike the gluten-free items, they're not clearly denoted with a "V" or something. The Ugly:*Credit card needed to secure the cancelation as there's $25/per person cancelation charge on reservations if not canceled within 24hrs.Conclusion: Great date night spot with fantastic service. The food was also quite good, as we're a tough crowd to feed, but it wasn't great--altho there's lots of potential. I can't even describe in words how good it was, no words would do it justice, you'd have to try it for yourself. Shoutout to our server and the kitchen for the amazing service and accommodating my request to swap the apples for strawberries. Paula C. "Celia's has been a beloved favorite of mine since childhood, back when I lived in San Mateo, and after all these years, the Menlo Park location still serves the same mouthwatering dishes I've been enjoying for the past 45 years! Tonight, I stopped by between clients and asked for a quiet spot in the back, and without hesitation, they led me to the perfect corner. The service was impressively fast, even though I was tucked away in an out-of-sight booth. And the best part? The music was so low that it barely registered on my Zoom call--only once when there was complete silence. Celia's holds such a special place in my heart, and it's even more special when I get to keep making memories there, even if it's just me! :)"
