Our favorite sushi spot for the last year or so. Beats out the other Richmond and sunset spots by far. Consistently great quality fish, flavors, and service. They don't skimp on the size of the cuts. I love the real marinated wasabi (you have to order). Do yourself a favor, give it a try.

You MUST get the amber jack jalapeno, no questions asked!O R D E R E D* Amber Jack Jalapeno* Pink Lady Roll* Toro Toro Roll* Omakase Sashimi Don [18 Piece]* Hamachi NigiriV E R D I C TRichmond District has a few sushi spots, but Umami Sushi truly stands out--and here's why:Amber Jack Jalapeño (100/10!)This dish is an absolute showstopper. Perfectly sliced amber jack sashimi with their house sauce--I could order five plates of this and still crave more. The fish is firm, fresh, and cut just right--not too thick, not too thin. The balance of flavors? Unreal. If you come here, this is a must-order.18-Piece Omakase Sashimi DonServed in a 9-square box, this dish is as beautiful as it is delicious. You get a generous variety of high-quality sashimi, and for $53, the portion is incredible. Compared to other spots that offer 8-piece nigiri omakase for the same price, this box gives you way more value. Plus, I noticed other tables were ordering it too, so you know it's a signature dish!Parking Tip: It's mostly residential parking, so finding a spot can be tricky. If you're lucky, you'll get one right in front or a block away, but if not, I recommend parking on Geary Street and walking a block down.If you're in the Richmond District and love fresh, high-quality sushi, Umami Sushi needs to be on your list. I'll definitely be back for that Amber Jack Jalapeño!

What a cute gem we found near sea cliff! We had the pleasure of having dinner here after watching the sun set at china beach nearby. The cozy, intimate atmosphere was perfect to escape the cold outside. Our amazing waitress served us the following delicious dishes listed in our gallery:

I'm always surprised this place isn't busier! Best sake sashimi I've had in the city--thick & buttery salmon. The roles are yummy too with kind staff and nice music (jazz covers of popular songs).

Really good takeout! Ordered in a whim, fish was fresh and delicious. Tamago tasted fresh not out of a premade container (also not too sweet). Toro and toro roll was SO good. Bonus points for recyclable containers.

Taking over Serendipity's space, Umami, with its much better name, opened April 2024.It's getting its sea legs and in doing so, it feels like they're skimping on ingredients in order to meet margins. Case in point, the mixed tempura. The vegetables lacked flavor and tasted from frozen yet the shrimp was fresh and crunchy though the dish overpriced at $14.59.The hamachi carpaccio ($16.95) was fresh and delicious but the delicate slices of hamachi were swamped by the texture of the sauce with a thick stickiness akin to BBQ sauce. That said, the sauce's smoky, complex flavor combined with a delicate, thin slice of jalapeño grew on me with every bite. Thinning out the sauce seems like a solution.Best plate was the toro toro roll ($17.59) with delicious toro, the crisp texture of oshinko, delicate avocado and the spike of house special wasabi. I loved it.Last, the negitoro roll ($10) had an unappetizing mushy texture and I couldn't decide whether the fish had seen one better day or was simply the style of being chopped into a mash, giving it an odd mouth feel. Umami is doing many things right with more ambiant, lower lighting and music that gives the space life. The quality of the fish is about average and doesn't compare to the pristine quality of its predecessor.I admire Umami's experimenting with flavors but they need to level up on the quality of the fish. It's good - but it won't become a destination in this competitive restaurant town. They rejected my request to sit at the sushi bar- a first- and aroused my suspicion. I sat in the dining area whose two other tables had just closed their checks and were leaving.

Umami has breathed new life into this space! The nigiri is exquisite, and the rolls are creative and delicious. The gyoza is a perfect appetizer. A worthy successor to Serendipity, Umami is a must-visit for sushi enthusiasts. Fun new decor on the walls and outside. Want to also mention the extremely attentive, warm and kind service we received. Located in the central Richmond district of San Francisco.
