The Pig & Whistle

This is just a very homey place with all the things a pub should have- DartsFish and chipsProper pintsGuys who have their regular barstoolGuys who sit in front window and look like they live there. Shepherds pieBangers and mashMasala ( because it's San Francisco and close enough to a London pub with Indian influence) comfort food Dark mood lighting so it's trickier to play pool and darts. Bartender who doubles as server.

The fish n chips were simply delicious. This ismy go to place for fresh and delicious fish n chips

friends & i got some fish n chips (innit) and we felt like we were in propah london. probably offending some britishers right now but that's alright, all love. they had a delish curry sauce that went with our fries too. ALSO - service was very kind. i myself felt that the fish and chips were a little too heavy/much for my taste but i think to anyone who likes this sort of dish you would be delighted to devour it

This place is sooo underrated! Love the fish & chips with a side of the curry sauce! The sausage that comes with the English Breakfast is fire too!

I've only made two (2) trips to The Pig & Whistle, and I must admit that this pub has a special place in my heart. The Pig is located within a prime spot (for me) in San Francisco. This "fine dining pub" lies on Geary Blvd, one block away from the Target on Masonic Ave. I like the fact that I could run my errands at Target and then get myself a cool brewsky and a set of satisfying fish right next door! The pub does not appear to be filled with hipsters, just local dudes chopping it up with the bartender at the bar, of course. It's a very low-key spot, a feature which I love.I haven't ordered anything else other than a pint of beer and their delicious Fish N' Chips. After dining here (mainly, for their fish), it's safe to say that this dish is a sure bet. The pub delivers a fried fish which is something special. The cod meat is thick and succulent while the batter is frankly, light and crispy. Most fried foods make crispy sounds. But the Pig & Whistle's fried fish make a sound which actually "taste" satisfying. I know that I'm not biting into an oily piece of meat. I also know that the fish is perfectly incorporated within that light, crunchy batter. Since there are no unnecessary clusters of fried dough protruding it tastes as if they got the perfect fried fish down to a science. The chips, however, are basic steak fries. I can forgive the pub for this because the fish is so outstanding you'll probably feel that you'll get your money's worth. On my first visit, I did order Buffalo Wings. I would rank the wings with the steak fries as an "afterthought". Both dishes were honestly, standard bar food.The Pig & Whistle, is a friendly neighborhood pub with surprisingly, excellent fish. The bartender was quite the gentlemen and even gave me a history lesson behind the name, The Pig & Whistle. Also, the parking around the area is moderately easy. I give it a good 4.9....ayeee!!

I keep thinking this friendly English pub is a lot older than it is, like from the Barbary Coast days. But no, it opened only in 1991 which means I was old enough to have a pint in here back then. Meantime, The Pig & Whistle is among the most familiar and reasonably priced watering holes in the city.It's a place I can pop by as I traverse Geary from the Richmond. I have yet to eat here as I rarely have a hankering in the middle of the afternoon for bangers & mash. However, their menu is a lot more robust and well-rounded with burgers and even Mexican parmigiana, so yes, I should try the food. Lately kind bartender Chris has been making me the $7.50 'Espresso' Martini where he substitutes espresso with coffee and coffee liqueur (photo: https://yelp.to/v1FwVuy3yn). Delicious. I'm not a person who goes to a bar for drinks and food. But this place is definitely a spot for their fish & chips and chicken wings. Those were 2 of my favorite items. It was a little dark inside, but I guess that's how bars are set up. It did get a little loud when more people came in, but it wasn't too bad. Service was excellent, and food came out quickly. Everyone was very friendly and attentive.

Damn, this feels bitter sweet to write. Here's my love letter to Pig and Whistle. Living in Laurel Heights, you essentially are in the equivalent of the Sahara Desert, but for bars. I stumbled into this place years ago because it was the closest place to wet my whistle, and over the years have been lucky enough to make some life long friends. The unassuming bar has epic fish and chips, even better country fried chicken, and some split pea soup that gives Anderson's a run for its money. If you go during the daytime be prepared for daytime Chris, maybe one of the most kind hearted genuine bartenders you could ever have. Love you Chris! If you go during the weekend, be prepared for CJ and Seamus. Sure CJ might ruffle some feathers, but it's for the best interest of the bar keeping the bullshit losers out. Those losers can go drink and cause problems at Happy Lounge or Fizzees where all douchebag degenerates belong. He makes a damn good dirty martini, and hurricane that will knock you on your ass if you have more than one. Seamus locks it down in the background making sure your cup never goes empty. My only complaint is the juke box that only half the discs work on... sorry Steve, but someone had to say it. Go to the Pig and Whistle, talk to a regular, enjoy a cold beer, maybe a shot of the black sambuca, and I can almost guarantee you will walk in a stranger, but leave with friends. Late night eats at 10 pm! Decided to try this pub for their fish and chips, but we walked into this establishment and felt unwelcome and uncomfortable. It was dark and the place wasn't full of customers. No one said anything to us. No greeting or host to seat us. People were at the bar and even though it wasn't loud, not a word was said to us. We thought to walk all the way to the back of the restaurant because someone might be there to seat us but there wasn't anyone. So I guess they do not need new customers. We walked out and went somewhere else! I'm assuming only regulars are welcome here. It's unfortunate to have to write this review.

This place is a fun bar, but don't eat here. I went here with five friends for my birthday and was so embarrassed to have made this choice. The table was dirty as were many of the plates and glasses they used to serve us and the food was really awful. I can't imagine what they did to the fish and chips to give it absolutely zero flavor and the most unpleasant texture I've ever experienced. None of us finished our meals. Good thing we were able to get drunk I ate a bowl of soup when I got home.
