I have never been that into the egg tarts but I was going to be the outer Sunset area and saw the reviews for Mr. Bread. Oh wow! Bought 6, they were still warm from the oven, and they were so very good. Fresh, creamy, rich. They were still good the next day, and the next.

Seriously the BEST potats (portugese custard tarts) in SF! I was recommended this place by my friend who'd been coming here since childhood. Once I tried their potat there was no going back. It's a typical asian bakery that had no seating inside (cash only!) I've also gotten their curry beef bun which is also very yummy. Been wanting to try their corn bun but it's always sold out Note: they sometimes close for a couple days without notice (sign on door) so I've gone there twice before where I left sad

Mr. Bread is worth visiting only for their Portuguese egg tarts and Hong Kong-style egg tarts--these are the standout items and the only reason I'd return. The tarts are fresh, flaky, and not overly sweet, striking the right balance of flavors and textures that make a great egg custard tart.Beyond that, the other baked goods don't impress. I always do a standard comparison by trying the BBQ bun, ham and egg bun, and egg tarts to gauge a bakery's overall quality. The ham and egg bun lacked sauce, making it dry compared to what other Chinese bakeries offer, and the portion of ham and egg was very minimal. The BBQ bun was unexpectedly salty rather than the usual sweet-savory balance--possibly just an off batch, but still disappointing. This is a takeout-focused spot with no seating inside, so it's mainly for quick pickups or catering orders. Parking is metered street parking nearby, which can be a bit of a hassle at busy times. On the positive side, the bakery is clean, family-owned, and the staff is friendly. If I come back, it'll only be for the egg tarts.

I would've never known about this compact family-run bakery on Taraval were it not for a local food vlogger named Mei Mei, who drove her mom all around the city to try all the available custard tarts. After going to all the usual suspects in Chinatown and elsewhere, most of which I've tried, they stopped here and raved about the tarts. OK, that was enough of an incentive for me to take the L line over. Well, on my first visit, I didn't get here until about fifteen minutes before closing.I should've known they'd be sold out of tarts. Since the owner caught me looking forlorn, I impulsively bought two items, the $2.50 Coconut Strudel, a flaky and spongey pastry shaped like a thick stick (photo: https://yelp.to/Oy6uNnWCpF). The other was the $2.50 Custard Horn. Although bigger than a tart, it made a nice substitute (photo: https://yelp.to/Lf-7jwN-vY). Both were satisfying treats, but hey, they weren't tarts. That didn't happen until today when I found myself in Parkside at lunchtime. It dawned on me that I could finally get a tart. Sure enough, they had them fresh on a tray on top of their display case. They had Egg Custard Tarts and Portuguese Custard Tarts, so for only $4.90, I bought one of each. They shared a thin, flaky shell. The plain egg one had a perfectly smooth custard filing (photo: https://yelp.to/PlcQMQDtyq), while the Portuguese one had a nice toasted top that lent a welcome texture to the tart (photo: https://yelp.to/xizR5mxluF). Thanks Mei Mei, and thank your mom.FOOD - 5 stars...I'm giving it up for the tartsAMBIANCE - 3 stars...a bit ramshackle but cozySERVICE - 4.5 stars...industrious and friendlyTOTAL - 5 stars...give me another Portuguese tartRELATED - Exploring the Sunset? 11/2/2024Dan Tat, egg tarts, or custard tarts as we call them; are nostalgia in a bite. These eggy sweet goodness are confections that can be found in many bakeries nowadays. These question is; how many are them that are actually good? Where: this hidden gem is located in the Sunset District on 19th Avenue and Taraval. This district is primarily an enclave for the Chinese. One would say that this is a classic mom and pop run establishment akin to a hole in the wall. This bakery is also not hyped, meaning it flys under the radar. What: this bakery produces most classic Chinese baked goods from cream cakes to baked baos, but I came here for one thing only, or two since their egg tarts come in two varieties. The tarts: the classic dan tart has a crisp shell that's lavished with lard (yes, lard as opposed to butter), and has a jiggly custard that's sweetened. The second type of egg tart, comes from Portugal, where the custard is browned, and the custard is more jiggly. The comparison: San Francisco has another bakery famed for their dan tats, but that they're not always in operation. How do the two compare? Golden Gate Bakery's dan tats, like the macaron, prices go up annually; rich buttery shell, and jiggly custard that tastes like condensed milk. Mr. Bread's dan tat is similar, though the shell isn't as buttery; but the size, flavor, and overall lower price point - makes their dan tat a worthy contender. Is the hype real? Those looking for a Golden Gate Bakery dan tat will certainly like those from Mr. Bread. As this bakery flys under the radar, there's not so much of a line here. Do bring cash as there is no credit or tap to pay options. Final Thoughts: I bought a box of 9 to fill, 4 classic and 5 Portuguese - to share and to devour myself. I left two to chill overnight and reheated it; I was impressed as the tart remained fresh tasting. Other bakery dan tats that I've had, the texture and flavor goes south overnight. Definitely worth visiting if ever in the area.

Thanks to my Uber Yelp friend AL L, Mr.Bread came up on the radar when I asked who had the best Chinese egg tarts. Of course Golden Gate came up. ...I was surprised to hear of this previously unknown bakery to me as his and his wife's favorite stop. So of course had to get there to try them!During a particular day filled with food collecting, sightseeing, and Yelp event attending in the city, Kyra K and I made it to Mr.Bread. The bakery is very unassuming; even easy to miss. Do yourself a favor and don't! We got there soon after lunch and already found the egg custard tarts all out. "Five minutes wait five minutes okay?" After ordering a sampling of Portuguese tarts, coconut tarts, and "almost ready" egg custard tarts, waited off to the side. While waiting the small store filled up fast! And one after another, their selections sold out. Enjoyed taking them to a park to sample with friends, then some home to share with family. While the Portugese tarts were all my friends favorite with the brulee like topping. My cousin hands down favored the coconut tart. For me it was the less sweet, absolutely custardy egg tart. Good problem to have... something for everyone! For the tarts...five stars!Agree, Mr.Bread added into my new rotation of "must stops" while in the city. Love that the shop is outside of Chinatown on Taraval St and definitely easier parking.

While hanging out together, my friend Li Y. mentioned hearing great things about Mr. Bread's egg tarts. With the whole day ahead and being in the area, I insisted on taking us so we could check out the acclaimed shop! The bakery is a true local, mom-and-pop, hole-in-the-wall shop! Very unassuming both inside and outside with a small bakery display case and a storefront to squeeze around 6 people. Known for their egg tarts, you can see other baked goods displayed as well as a menu. The ladies working were efficient and cordial at packing the other. Depending on the time of day and what you want, you may have to wait for things to come out of the oven.I'll be real, I don't like the taste or texture of sweet custard--being dairy-free it's in my favor to avoid it. With my kind friend Li Y. graciously picking out the baked goods and paying for us, we decided to sample. Though I don't like egg tarts, the ones at Mr. Bread surprised me! Their Portuguese Custard Tarts are mind-blowing delicious, sweet, and flaky. The Egg Custard Tart was silky while the Coconut Custard Tart was dense, crumbly, and heavy on the coconut. I found them to be fine but the Portuguese Custard Tart to be the true winner!Though egg tarts aren't necessarily my favorite thing, they might be for you! If that's the case, Mr. Bread on Taraval is a must for those in the city and Bay Area try! I know I'll be recommending it to my friends. The location is small but somewhat easy to find with metered or neighborhood parking around.

3.5 based on custard tartsEgg custard tart: $2.30 3.5*. Crust was ok, less flaky than GG. Custard was good.GG bakery is the dan tat OG tho in Chinatown which is challenging to get to & well worth the hassle. Portugese custard tart: $2.60 solid 3*. Crust was ok, different than egg tart. Custard was good, a bit too sweet for my taste. Both were kept on a warming tray, which is a plus bc custard tarts are best warm.
