Was having a craving for Pan Dulce on the way back home from SF and this place did not disappoint! Great prices for top quality bread and pastries! I've grown up eating Pan Dulce, so I knew just by looking at the options that this place was going to become one of my favorites! The nice lady ringing us up was super sweet! She joked along with us and provided us some great customer service! We waited 10 minutes for some fresh out-the-oven conchas - HOLY COW , tasted just like the ones from my parent's small town in Michoacán, Mexico. The Pan Dulce was so good we decided to come back and pick some more up for my sister's birthday party! Everyone loved it! It's a small location but the service is quick, they offer lots of options and great prices. Definitely come check them out when you're in the area.

I was in awed to walk into this little but fully stocked bakery. The baked goods are all delicious. They are baked in-house. The girl at the care register is sweet and friendly. I was the only non Hispanic in the store. People are kinda showing me hospitality as I looked lost, not knowing what to do. The conchas are delicious but my favorite is the bread with jalapeño cream cheese. The heat is manageable. The jalapeño has a little crunch to it. The bread has the perfect balance of sweetness and saltiness from the cream cheese. It is big. I could eat the entire thing but I have to limit myself. I took one star off because the trays and thongs are not very clean.**UPDATE**I visited this bakery again, exactly a week after my last visit. This place is a little out of the way for me but the drive is totally worth it. This time I tried the conchas. They are the best. The bread is soft, a little chewy and the outside is nice and crisp. Biting into the concha feels heavenly. I ate one as I was standing in line to pay. While I was there, this cake was sitting on the counter waiting to be picked up. It is soooo beautiful. I also picked up a flan. It's creamy and smooth. The browned sugar sauce was the best I've had. Again, I met the nicest sales person. Her name is Mariela. She has such a sweet, happy face. And is very helpful in answering my questions. If you ever feel down, talk to her, her very uplifting, positive energy will raise you up.

When I saw they have conchas (bread with shell like exterior), I knew I had to check the place out. This bakery is obviously a local favorite. They are busy but they get the line moving. You get a tray and you fill it with bread of your choice. The prices are reasonable and the product is great. We went two days in a row! Wish we had a bakery like this in Maine.

In search of a traditional and yummy tres leches cake to serve at our party, I found several bake shoppes via Yelp which led Z and me to visit Las hijas del Gallo BAKERY for the first time on the afternoon of Sunday, May 14, 2024.Located at the edge of downtown South San Francisco, Las hijas del Gallo can boast that they have a parking lot adjacent to the venue. Not sure if it's for the business, but we parked there with no issues. The grey-painted building is not tiny, but also not huge. Most of the interior area is occupied for employees only, where all the baking magic happens. Customer areas are restricted to the small foyer, where the counters for placing orders and paying for goodies are done, and a narrow hallway where the baked goods are reeled into the row of metal racks from where the myriad of pastries, pans dulces (sweet breads), pasteles y pastelitos (cakes & cupcakes), muffins, etc. (you name your baked sweet, they probably offer it) are set out to grab (with tongs, of course) for purchase. Within the front area are also a case of refrigerated desserts such as tres leches slices and cups, flan, gelatinas, etc. and coffee & microwave stations. The place is kept decently tidy, though Z commented that the racks of confections could be cleaner. Below are just a few items that we have had.TRES LECHES CAKE - At our initial visit, we brought home a pre-packed slice and after his first taste, Z immediately decided that we were going to order the tres leches cake from here for the party. The single slice was packaged in a transparent plastic container, sitting in a pool of milk. Everyone agreed - the cake slice was very moist and enjoyable. This prompted us to return to Las hijas on the evening of Wednesday, May 22, to order a half sheet of tres leches cake with cream filling. We didn't find anything that we were looking for in their book of cake decorations, so we pulled up a simple photo from an internet search which they said that they could replicate. The finished product looked almost identical to the picture that we provided. Unfortunately, though, the half sheet didn't deliver nearly half of the milky moistness as the slice which was a little disappointing.CHURROS - V likes their churros.CHOCOLATE DONUT - Good, standard in taste and texture, according to Z.OREJAS - Also known as palmiers. These are huge! Perfect flakiness and sweetness.POLVORONES ROSAS - This simple pink sugar cookie is always my go-to at every panadería. The version here has a slight chew at the edges which I love.CREAM FILLED CHOCOLATE BAR - Z & V didn't expect this bar to be filled with cream/custard. V said that it wasn't bad, though, even with the surprise filling.ROL DE CANELA/RAISIN & CREAM ROLL - DJ didn't find any cream in this. For that reason, he was very disappointed in this pastry.EMPANADA DE PIÑA/PINEAPPLE TURNOVER - "Ok; good, but not fabulous," according to DJ. "A little on the dry side."SPINACH WITH FETA CHEESE - I liked this savory pastry, toasted a bit, but DJ found it a bit bland.PUERQUITO - Disappointingly hard as a rock and dry, according to DJ.Fun fact: This is a family-owned business. The daughters of El Gallo took over the Mexican Bakery and changed the name to Las hijas del Gallo. Insert heart emoji here. I never visited when they were still El Gallo, but I can tell you that the next generation's team delivers excellent customer service. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful. The women are all so cute, too! I think I met one of the sisters and told her, "You're so cute, like a muñeca! I just want to hug you!" To which she responded that she could give me a hug, opening up her arms to me. Insert sparkling heart emoji here! Doesn't get better than that, guys. So glad that we found this place. After discovering them less than a month ago, we have already visited three times. You betcha that we will be back!Support small businesses like this place, please! Las hijas del Gallo will warm your heart and tummies, I promise!

WOW! This place is legit and deserves all the flowers. Thanks to Yelp, I made a pit stop here on the way back from SF and I am so glad I did. The lady at the front saw me looking lost when I came in and she walked with me and guided me through the process and the items. In case you are wondering, you have to pick up a tray and tongs and choose the items in the trays on the left. I got the cream cheese bread, the chocolate concha and could not resist the flan. All 3 were exceptional and disappeared fast. Yummy! Delightful spot and delightful people.

This bakery makes the best Mexican sweet bread in the Bay Area in my humble opinion. However, FYI, the prices have gone up significantly as just about everything these days. Just keep that in mind when choosing the amount of bread you put on your self serve tray as there are no prices posted and you're just up to the whim of the cashier you get that day because I get charged differently each time. So, ask for prices before they ring you up or you can be shocked at the total price you'll be charged. Just be aware and enjoy the best Mexican sweet bread in the Bay Area.

I come here for their Epiphany Bread at the start of the year, but I also come here at times for their Pan Dulce.Parking is not horrible though I visit either in the morning or early evening. As for the space it's old school so grab a pan and select what you want. Regarding the staff they were pleasant, and as a non Spanish speaker there has never been a language barrier issue. Plus their baked goods are fresh, made with quality ingredients, and affordable though I wish prices were posted. In my opinion it's one of the best Mexican style Bakeries in the San Francisco / San Mateo counties. Yes it's a goto for me.
