I can't stop thinking about the focaccia I ate here. By the time I arrived here on Saturday around 12pm, most of the goodies were sold out, but there were a couple rounds of focaccia left, beckoning us with their voluptuous circular shapes and ruby red tomato slices. We bought one and a sticky bun. The focaccia was so pillowy and interspersed with the taste of spices and fresh, juicy tomato. I thought I was full but then I took a bite of the sticky bun, which was so yummy, with that slight caramelization happening from the coating of sugar. My only issue with the bun was that I was expecting it to be crispier on the outside instead of doughy. Will be back when the carb cravings hit again!

Wow.... I still think about the raspberry and peach galette when they were at the ferry building and can still taste it. I was visiting from New Jersey and grew up in Brooklyn so I know pastries... like the back of my hand. These were real deal galettes and they were wrapped in a soft yet crispy perfectly cooked dough. I tell EVERYONE who visits San Fransisco to visit this place, their is a couple gems on that list that I will not forget. The Dough is perfect to take on the go and doesn't fall apart in your hand but is still FILLED with raspberry and peach . Every bite was bursting with flavor and didn't lack or have dry spots of just dough. Nothing worse than biting into a pastry and getting all bread! I can't wait to come back to the Bay Area and bite into another one of these bad boys! A must try if you are at the ferry building !!

With Tuesdays being my usual shopping day, Downtown's presence at the Ferry Building made my wallet a little lighter. Usually, my only opportunity to get their morsels is the Saturday markets here, but you know how I feel about crowds; I did visit their store in Healdsburg just before Cyrus permanently closed..On a recent Tuesday, they offered a great deal on their almond bars (http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=dWGlTRdL2OuMvo9yijeHfA&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q), 6 for $9.00 (normally $1.75 each); if you like pecan pie, you'll enjoy this one. I also noticed their latest focaccia aptly named Volcano (http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=8-dvORJ7YpnaEC6k1OnT9g&userid=saJuyv784apZzH--psHZ3Q). Packed with a variety of cheeses, fresh tomato slices, and black olives, this looks like a savory bundt cake with the center hole. Heating it up in my toaster oven, I could not finish this in one sitting as I finished a little more than half for my dinner. Their flavors are just right for me, neither too salty nor too sweet.Glad that I can get this during my regular shopping routine and save an hour of sleep on my Saturdays.

I really do enjoy their donut muffins. I always wondered how they were made and it was actually featured on the Food Network (The Best Things I Ever Ate) and I guess it's good to know they aren't fried (they're baked), but they are also covered with butter, which is probably what makes them taste so good.Well, these are great and I will continue to have them!

Sometimes they're five-star worthy. I've been gobbling up their tomato focaccia for at least a decade, if not a decade and a half. Pretty much for however long the Ferry Building farmer's market has existed, Downtown Bakery has had a presence. Same guy too (used to be two guys manning the fort but now it's just the one guy). These days, I'm less of a morning person than I used to be (understatement of the year and not their fault) and so I don't make it out there as often as I'd like to (2-4 times a year instead of every weekend as was my habit years ago), but if there's anything that can motivate me to wake up early enough on a Saturday morning to trek over to the Ferry Building on foot (nearly 3 miles on foot!), it's for the prospect of obtaining Downtown Bakery's tomato focaccia. It's delicious, especially at it's best.BTW, initially, I gave them four stars even before posting this review but internal debate in my head says they're worthy of five stars after all. The focaccia is inconsistent, yes (but well, tomatoes are inconsistent! Depends on time of year), but I've been going to the Ferry Building farmer's market for over a decade and that damn focaccia is the primary reason and often the only thing I buy. This is a reluctant review BTW, as I have no desire to increase their demand, which would reduce my opportunity to obtain said focaccia. Yeah, they run out too soon and blargh.
