Staff here are nice and friendly. They are always polite and helpful. Recently, there were some changes to the decor. I liked Piazza the way it was before. Some items include: dry herbs, teas, tea bags, bulk dried foods, cooking sauces, seasonings, cookies, and dry ramen. Also frozen foods like: potstickers, bao, and frozen desserts.I didn't experience any problems with customer service. I'm 2nd Gen ABC, and I don't speak chinese. Tiffinie T. "I live in somewhat of a no-man's land when it comes to good marketing. Forget about fresh produce or organic dairy. That's all fine, I suppose, as la Whole Paycheck is a close hike away.Besides, I live just around the corner from College Market. This place is perfect for a little stuff you need around the house -- t.p., laundry detergent, box of cereal, bottle of (decent) wine, non-organic milk. And much to my surprise, Spam musubi's! For real's! Big, giant, thick-slices of Spam, perfect rice, nicely wrapped in a wide ribbon of seaweed.Okay, so some of you are, like, ewww, OMG, did she, like, say *Spam*? Yes. Get over it. They remind me of Hawaii... and they're tasty. In addition to this Hawaiian "delicacy", College Market has made-to-order deli sandwiches, a selection of side salads (macaroni, potato, veggie, tomato & mozzarella, etc.), soup of the day, chow mein, pot stickers, fried rice, and every soft drink and juice you could imagine. They even have freshly pre-packed salads if you're in an extra big hurry. It's the perfect place to grab a little lunch on the go.The downfall of this conveniently-located-near-me-market is the hours. They're not open nights, and I can't figure out their weekend schedule. Do they have a weekend schedule? Regardless, the staff are accommodating, the selection of household essentials is great, and the musubi's are a favorite of the BF (so great for little surprise snacks!). Minus 1-star for being closed evenings and (I assume) weekends.Oh, and Euge... I did NOT tell the guy that you are the King of Chabot. Whatever *that* is."

The owner used to work at the 7-Eleven on 11th Avenue (now closed) long ago, and later left to open his own store here.I can't say I come to this place often, because I can buy everything I need elsewhere. Friendly service. When I lived in this area, I remember coming here to buy my fast pass/bus tokens, and snacks like "100-year-old" Twinkies (I think those things last a long time), HoHos (invented in SF!!), Ding Dong cakes, Hostess fruit pies, whatchamacallit candy bars, etc."

Jennifer O. "It would be a toss-up whether Pacific Food Mart or NOPA Corner Market is the cleanest convenience store in the city.Spic and span, no dust settled anywhere; this is my annoying trait of noticing minutia- that and being an equally annoying grammarian.I digress: I dashed in to grab some Pilsner and they had quite a good selection in the refrigerated case. Prices are a dollar or two more than big grocery stores but that's to be expected. I decided to plunk another $6 on lottery tickets because I hadn't yet paid enough self-imposed tax or won anything. Their take-out sandwiches look terrific and the owner was very solicitous and sweet. I could bathe in the kindness of his calling me "dear" several times. Steve D. "I was walking around Balboa St after 6pm, and saw some nice oranges at this produce market. Actually there was a variety of fresh fruits and veggies, but I was only interested in the oranges (my favorite fruit). Balboa Market is a nice neighborhood market that has a little bit of everything. The prices are, of course, higher than in a big supermarket. But I have found better customer service and just plain better treatment in smaller markets, than in chain supermarkets. Why? They want repeat business and positive opinions about the place (like Yelp reviews). When you shop in a neighborhood market, you just buy what you need. While I was paying for my oranges and chocolate chip cookies, the clerk tried to sell me ice cream. I told him it's around 57*F and drizzling outside. He said eating ice cream might make you feel warmer. Then we had an amusing discussion about San Francisco weather. Maybe 57*F is balmy for the "Avenues" because people were outside eating dinner in parklets. Anyway, Balboa Produce Market is a nice neighborhood store, and is probably a popular choice among locals. That's why it was still open pass 6pm."

Ed U. "I want to call this spiffy-looking family-run market Chavez West because it reminds me of the more robust Mexican supermarket in Hayward (review: http://bit.ly/2pEYMO9). Recently expanded from a more traditional-looking market across the street and housed in a unique Art Deco-style building with its own parking lot, this true supermercado is centrally located in the Latin-flavored North B Street neighborhood of San Mateo. It made quite an impression on me with all the fresh produce out in front (photo: http://bit.ly/2pulnwG) and the expansive seafood and meat counter (photo: http://bit.ly/2QTAJXQ).Nonetheless, you can tell the merit of a mercado by how fresh and expansive their panaderia is (photo: http://bit.ly/2DqlF1b) and how many different types of tortillas they make (photo: http://bit.ly/2QXB37U). They score on both counts. Where they fall short is their smallish taqueria which didn't allow much room for seating (photo: http://bit.ly/2NBXn9q). I have to admit I liked Chavez's set-up of a diner inside the market and a separate panaderia next door. Presumably real estate restrictions didn't allow that here, but it's still a most worthwhile market to get your hard-to-find Mexican staples.RELATED - Interested in unique markets? Don't bother with the alternative brands that don't look familiar. Don't bother with the lines. Go to Golden Farmer Market instead. Much cheaper, it's likely got what you're looking for, and you can be in and out in five minutes if you know what you want. I'd say I do the majority of my shopping here now as they mostly have what I need. Chicken, beef, milk, eggs, all your basic necessities and then some. I saw an amazing collection of instant ramens on the side and a huge variety of fruit and produce in the front. I call it my neighborhood tip, but it might be more like my neighborhood secret. Daniel B. "Union Street Produce Company is the prototypical neighborhood grocery store. Located at the corner of Union St and Mason St in Russian Hill, this small corner store is popular for its fresh and affordable produce, fresh-squeezed orange juice, and super friendly service. These guys are on the ground level of a four-story apartment building. The Powell-Mason cable car runs right by the store. One of my good friends who lives nearby in North Beach introduced me to this place during my last visit to San Francisco. We stopped here while walking back to his apartment. This is his favorite grocery store. He recently moved apartments within San Francisco and wanted to move to an apartment within a radius such that he could continue shopping at Union Street Produce Company on a regular basis. That it affects the decision of where one moves should be all you need to know about this place. The store looks like your typical, longtime, in-the-city, neighborhood market. The Union St side has open-air bins and carts of fruits and vegetables (apples, oranges, etc.) ready for the taking outside on the sidewalk. The inside is as colorful as can be with an assortment of fresh fruits and veggies including peaches, nectarines, grapes, plums, and melons, red, yellow, and green bell pepper, cucumbers, green beans, snow peas, jalapenos, squash, tomatoes, Brussels sprouts, artichoke, corn, mushrooms, cabbage and lettuce (of various types), potatoes, onion, scallions, garlic, and much more. They have baggies of dried fruits (e.g. kiwi, figs) and nuts. We picked up kale, spinach, carrots, apples, and ginger to make juice at home. And there's more than just produce. While the store isn't very big, the owners have managed to stock just enough of food and ingredients to suffice it as a one-stop for all your grocery needs. They have pastas, cereals, milk, cheese, and other dairy products, condiments, seasonings/spices, canned and jarred goods, beverages, household products and cleaning supplies, Ziploc bags, snacks, noodles, breads, and chocolate to name a handful. In addition, they carry frozen foods and meat (chicken, beef, sausage) and fish. No, it's nowhere big as a Safeway, Lucky, or Trader Joe's, but it packs quite a punch for its size.Shopping here also feels good because you're supporting a small local business staffed by genuinely nice people. Prices are reasonable and credit cards are accepted."

The only thing is, I was staying an hour away from this location (Half Moon Bay/Pescadero area) and it was 95F degrees out. Fortunately, they had inexpensive coolers and dry ice which he recommended. Since handling dry ice can have potential minor risks, he handled the packaging of the dry ice into the cooler and packed my ice cream in it for me. He even bagged the rest of my items.
