When the hubs suggested we eat here, saying it was food on skewers, I thought, "Heck yeah!" Street food for dinner? The spot is clean and has enough seating for an impromptu drop-in. We enjoyed the pop music, which added to the fun ambiance. The very polite gentleman behind the counter advised me in the beginning that "everything is deep fried," but I admit I didn't heed the warning. Yes to the chicken skin, yes to the bao, yes to the dumplings, yes to alllll of it. I also threw in the sausage to our order. And while it all tasted great, my very full stomach hates me right now. So my advice to you is to not over order. Start with the chicken steak - it is DELICIOUS - and dip it in the honey mustard sauce. If you love hot dogs, you have to try the sausage. It's really that good.If you're hungry for more, you can always get it for a second round!

Really wanted to like this place, hopefully they'll work out the kinks during soft opening.Sausage (off the roller): 1/5Old and dry Fried chicken filet: 2/5Didn't like the marinate they did, too over powering and wet. the crust just falls off Chicken wing: 3/5Decent but over fried Fried sausage: 5/5The red wrapper Chinese sausage. Nothing special to this but taste authentic.

Out with Mochinut and in with a new Chinese fast food chain that has picked the Convoy Street Plaza for its first Southern California location. It's not one of the better parking lots on this street as you have the uber-popular conveyor belt style sushi restaurant a few doors down that generates a lot of customer traffic. The inside of the suite had countertop seating adjacent to the front windows and several tables for onsite dining. You order at the service counter and then the food will be brought out to your table.Zhengxin Chicken Steak specialized in freshly fried chicken to order with cutlets that were seasoned with different types of sauces and spices. There were plenty of other proteins offered as fried skewers including seafood, vegetables, and limited organ meat. During the recent grand opening period, there was a complimentary drink added to any order. You could select the beverage from the refrigerated display to the right of the main entrance. Two items were featured as hot sellers. I picked the first one which was the signature Chicken Steak that was one piece cut into five strips. The crust was hot and crunchy when I received it. I chose four skewers to make up the rest of my meal along with a plum drink that was one of the freebies in the refrigerated display. Beef, fish tofu, lamb, and pork belly were the proteins of choice. The fish was my favorite because of the tofu density which held up well to the mild seasoning. The pork belly was a couple of long bacon strips. If you like fried food as snacks, then Zhengxin Chicken Steak will be your spot. American inspired items like Cheese Sticks, French Fries, and a Tornado Potato that you see at summer fairs were also available. I preferred the fast casual ordering at the counter here compared to a couple of newer spots in town that also specialize in skewers, however they both implemented ordering at the table via a server.

Zhengxin Chicken Steak opens at 12pm but it's unlikely you will find a parking spot at that time. I visited at 2pm and there were only 2 spots free.Bbq chicken wings is what the menu indicated. The cashier told me they were fried. You get a small bag full. Loved the crunchy batter which had a nice mild flavor. I didn't like the seasoning which gave a bit of heat and a bit of a bitter flavor. Appeared to be Sichuan Chili Pepper Powder.Fried fish fillet looked like big french fries. I liked the texture of the batter which was crunchy. Flavor reminded me of frozen fried cod fillets from the supermarket. Also it was mostly batter and not much fish in the sticks.Drumstick had crunchy batter which I liked. Sadly it looked like the cook cut into the chicken and let all the juices escape with the result being dry chicken. Also there was more cayenne pepper used which gave the drumstick a very bitter flavor. The cashier was nice. I asked for a plate to eat on and was given a big plastic tray. I would have liked the chicken wings if there was a no Sichuan Chili Pepper Powder option.

We were excited to hear this place was opening a location in San Diego! Came in on a Saturday around 2 PM, and it wasn't very busy. We each ordered the chicken steak and shared an order of the tornado potatoes. The white meat chicken was tender and good quality. It was perfectly fried and very crunchy. The guy working there was friendly and checked on us several times. When the food came out, he recommended that we sprinkle some of their sweet plum powder on the chicken, which was delicious. It had a nice sweet and salty flavor that is balanced and tasted great on the chicken. The tornado potatoes were crispy and tasty but a little too oily for me.This place is a great addition to this shopping center in Convoy. I will definitely return to try different menu items.

We came here to check it out, as we saw a posting for it on facebook where they talked about it opening up. They gave free plum drinks/soda for their soft opening with purchasing. The plum drink was a nice touch of sourness and sugar. Fried skewers are on the oily side hence "fried." They had a plethora of options to fry your choice of meat or veggies. I don't believe I'm a huge fan of the oily skewers due to recent health changes on my side.We also ordered their popular chicken steak and some chicken drumsticks. My girlfriend was a fan of the chicken steak and said it was a taste of home. I wasn't the hugest fan as they marinated the meat on the inside and then fried the outside. Don't know if the marinaded chicken was too wet which is why the outer breaded skin fell off on some pieces. The taste was okay to me. Very cute design on the basket holding the skewers. The chicken drumsticks were interesting as the outside was sweet, and the inside was spicy on the inside. They also did serve the Taiwanese sausages which were tasty and v appealing. Our group did think they need to get plates, disposable for those dining in who want to share. We made do with the napkins. We purchased a couple of skewers, 2 chicken steaks, 1 taiwanese sausage, and some chicken drumsticks coming around to $57 for 4 people as I could only take a bite of things. They have one bathroom. Parking is a tad difficult as it shares the same plaza as Shanghai Noon, El Viejon Seafood, Iceskimo, and Kula Revolving Sushi. There is paid parking where Jasmine is, or you can try the inner streets, as they now have bike lanes on the main convoy street eliminating additional parking spaces.Overall, thought it was okay, but probably won't be on my list to return again due to recent diet changes for me, and I just thought it was too oily. But fried food = oily. Not for the health conscious.

I came in for lunch at opening. The gentlemen at the register was very friendly and happy to answer any questions. I ordered the Chicken Steak with chili season and plum. The chili was great, I loved the spice, the plum was good, but it made my chicken not very crisp (I took it to-go). I also ordered the king oyster mushroom skewer, the chicken skin skewer and the beef skewer. All of them were great. I do wish the chicken skin had been more crispy rather than rubbery, but the flavor was great. I loved the mushroom it reminded me of fair food. I love the spice and the sweetness. The beef was wonderful, probably my favorite item. Really everything was fantastic and I can't wait to come back and try more. Service was great also, our food was done in less than 5 minutes and the gentlemen at the register was apologizing for the wait, we thought it was quick and no apology was needed. I appreciate how much care was put into the food as well as the service.

Stumbled upon here during their soft opening. Staff was super friendly and immediately asked if we had any questions. They were also helpful with recommendations on what to order. Since it was their soft opening, they provided us with complimentary plum drinks which was a nice gesture! There's ample of seating inside. What we tried:Potato ball with taro: Very surprised and would order this again! I was expecting something sweet but it's savory which I preferred.Spicy chicken wings: Super crispy and I love the seasoning!Chicken steak: This is one of the popular items but I did not enjoy it as much. It's made with chicken breast and I definitely prefer dark meat over white meat. I wanted to try their drumstick (also a popular item) but it was sold out. Will definitely be back to try other items after their soft opening!

An order of Fried chicken steak gets you a box of about two steaks cut up and fried very similarly to Taiwanese popcorn chicken style. You get a choice of three powders: chili, cumin, and plum.It didn't take too long but there is a bit of a wait as they fry up your chicken and I would say it's totally worth it because of how delicious it was. This is a great snack to take home with you and chow down while watching a movie. The renovations are mostly nice but I'm surprised by the curtain to the kitchen and how I can still see a little bit of it from the counter. But other than that there is a big wall with a brand new sign. There are some fun chicken stickers on their windows.I haven't tried these yet but other things I saw on the menu were fried skewers and Fried chicken drumsticks. I initially thought they had hot pot because the skewers look very similar to some of the hot pot places but it's actually to get a another type of fried snack. I think I saw fried milk too... I don't remember at this point but you should really go and check it out and find out for yourself
