First time at this restaurant, but we read the reviews and we were looking forward to the adventure.Parking is limited, but we came early and got one of the limited parking spots right next to the restaurant. We did not have reservations, and there were several groups of people ahead of us. A short wait and we were seated inside. Our waiter was Gabe and he was an absolute pleasure throughout the meal. The albacore was amazing and we had two orders of it. We had two rolls that were amazing and the cocktails were to die for. We finished dinner with the strawberry rhubarb cobbler with vanilla ice cream.Loved the food, the cocktails, and the service. We will definitely be back soon!

My friend and I've had this place in our list to try and were so excited to go! It was a Thursday night so we didn't think we would need a reso.Parking in that area can be a little tight-fyi. Anyways when we checked in, it seemed to be empty. The hostess made it seem like it would be a little challenging to get in. Another hostess came over and sat us without any issues. When we lift, there was a line to get in. It is such a cool place and very unique. We enjoyed seeing the fish and shark hanging in the refrigerators? Our waiter-Gabe-was great and had such a nice vibe. He shared his recommendations and offered accommodations too which was nice. No HH which is a bummer. Also, there was a hair in my chopsticks so my friend grabbed me a clean pair from the other table. The food is fresh and tastes great! We got a calamari made out of mushrooms which was so different but good and hard to tell the difference between mushroom and octopus. The reason for 4 Stars is the bugs. yuck! When our rolls came out so did the bugs-seemed like fruit flies. And it was a few; one even landed in a slice of sushi so it had to go waste since my friend could not fish it out. The doors were all open so maybe that's part of the reason why? Maybe they should have AC and shut the doors/if possible? We were seated inside too and it would have been different if we were out in the patio where bugs can be expected.

My friend and I were able to snag a table here on Thursday around 4:3 without a rezzy which was cool. The place was pretty empty until about 5:30 and then next thing you know it was a fully house inside and out. The aesthetics are nice and chill, and the patio was pleasant. We opted to sit inside because it was still a tad bit warm out. Our server Gave was so sweet and helpful, he helped us with menu items as well as just had a very fun personality. I had not seen my friend in a while and was too caught up in conversation and enjoying the present that I didn't even take pics We ordered the mushroom calamari, hedgehog roll and another roll but forgot the name, with a shoots Japanese beer on the side. Everything tasted so yummy! The sushi was mouth melting which was pretty fun to experience that texture. They do have a lot of "krab" in their rolls which I'm not a fan of, but Gabe was so nice to let us know we were free to swap it out with another fish or remove it completely. This was nice because some places are pretty strict on changes. I would totally give this place a 5 star review except for two things there were a lot of little flies everywhere and as I went to eat the last piece of a roll, I saw a tiny bug crawling out of it. I tried to get it off but it burrowed inside the roll LOL... it was awkward and I just left the piece there obviously The food, service and ambience were 5 stars... not sure what to categorize the reason for the reduction of 1 star but yeah... This was my first time going there and probably my last unless someone else wanted to go. Only saying this because I don't live too close by and I had been wanting to try it since they opened... kind of like one of those places you just wanted to experience and now you're good.

Was out and about in Oceanside. Had this spot marked to try so I went in. Its fresh and vibrant outside. Inside its a bit dark with table lamps that are bright. But not in your face. Its on the warmer side inside as they only have ceiling fans. Hostess was nice and offered to move us outside but we stayed in. No big deal. Gabe our server was superb. He recommended a few plates. Had a nice chat. Hope your move and schooling goes well, Gabe. They have vegan or at least vegetarian options on the menu. Albacore w crunch garlic black pepper cabbage delicious. Balanced and flavorful sashimi style dish. Lots of flavor. This was off of the special menu. The Pineapple Chorizo Apple Ceviche w Dragonfruit chips was iunno. I cant put my finger on it. It didnt have the acidity that ceviche normally has. The pineapple didnt come through at all. And I swear there was absolutely no chorizo. The avocado puree with the fish n apples was good. That went well. And the dragonfruit chips are quite tasty but not good for scooping up the ceviche. This was off the normal menu. Seared Swordfish w Miso Truffle Glaze was decent. Swordfish as nigiri was a a first time I saw this. Im a fan of swordfish but more as a grilled steak portion. The swordfish doesnt melt like other fishes. This was seared. And it did have that swordfish taste. The Miso Truffle Glaze reminded me of the Papa Johns / Pizza Hut / Dominos garlic sauce. It paired with the swordfish well. This was off the specials menu. 15 Day Aged Blue Fin Nigiri was divine. Very tasty. Loved the black pepper and other sauce it came with. Honestly a steal at $12 for the sashimi. This was off the specials menu. Washed that all down with a Shoots Japanese Lager. Very cold n refreshing. All above was about $85. Id definitely check out Seabasstropub if I were you. Crowd was a mix of young, middle and older folks. All seemed to be on vacay or just upbeat.

The most non-traditional sushi experience I've ever tried. That's not exactly the part I didn't like. I understand trying a different take on sushi when there are so many sushi places in SD area. I wasn't a fan of the lack of balance of flavors and the attempt to be avant garde but missing the mark. We had the cucumber salad, power bowl, wings of the sea (hamachi kama), and dragonfly roll. Cucumber salad was cucumbers on top of salad greens. The dressing was what seemed to be a cucumber mint dressing but it was only put on the top. So the salad greens base was completely dry and not seasoned. Even if you toss it with the dressing, it wasn't enough to coat the whole dish. There were a lot of apples and what seemed to be pickled green beans that overpowered everything else. The power bowl was essentially the salad with non seasoned rice and sashimi. What I did like from this spot was the quality of the fish. It helps justify the price slightly since the fish itself was pretty enjoyable. The wings of the sea was a fried yellowtail collar with a buffalo sauce. This was my favorite dish of the night. Very well cooked fish and the sauce was good. Lastly, the dragonfly roll was another example of one part of the dish overpowering the rest. The garlic oil on top of the roll just took over any subtle flavor the fish had to offer. Overall, I probably won't be back to this spot. The fish itself was really good but everything else was a let down. I had heard mixed reviews of this spot and I guess I've formed my own thoughts now: Lacking in attention to detail on lots of things for what seems to be a fancier than casual spot. I can see some good gems that some people might love here, but it's just not for me.

Wrench & Rodent has been on my list of places to try for the past few months. Their menu is filled with unique and creative dishes that are unlike any sushi restaurant I've been to. While I was extremely excited to dine here, it totally missed the mark. We ordered the Omakase, which was a 6-course dining experience, advertised as "CHEF'S SELECTION NIGIRI AND SASHIMI TASTING EXPERIENCE". While the dishes were good, not all were sushi/sashimi. One course was seared king trumpet mushrooms, they were decent, yet lack luster. The final dish was an overcooked swordfish, again...not what I expected from a Ngiri and Sashimi tasting experience. The restaurant was also extremely hot inside (this was at 8pm) and the service staff was unfriendly, unorganized and far from attentive. It took us almost 3 hours to eat 6 courses...We ordered additional ngiri options as we were told they were doing a last call on "savory food"...we watched the raw bar chef as he was closing down his station, wondering if we were going to get our ngiri orders - they never came. The waiter finally checked back after we finished our last omakase course, at which point we let her know our ngiri order was not dropped. All-in-all, I'd be reluctant to do the Omakase menu again. I'd try to get an earlier reservation to mitigate "last call." I do look forward to trying this again, but will focus on the chef's specials.

Amazing! After watching Chef Davin do a Seafood Demo at the Oceanside Harbor Fishmarket, we enjoyed an incredible dinner at his "Wrench and Rodent" restaurant in town. We were so blown away with the balance of wonderful, incredibly inspired flavors in every bite of sushi presented on the Omakase menu. I ordered the Yakisoba (perfect) because I was leary of a sushi order due to a previous underwelming experience at another very expensive restaurant in Orange County but my son and his fiancé were all about the sushi. I was immediately won back (so glad they shared!). This experience with Chef Davin's flavors was incredible. Go to this restaurant and enjoy yourself...the fresh creations on his menu are spectacular, the ambiance is comfortable and unpretentious, service was friendly and on target. We will be back even though it is an hour drive away!!!

Fun , grungy ambiance . Not super nice or clean but fun ambiance and Great service . Fresh fish. Gripes : fish could have been colder & 12 dollar IPAs wtf . Overall expensive . Charging more for fish or for wine I can stomach but charging 12 dollars for one ipa beer out of a can I cannot fathom. Will be hard to go back due to being charged 12 dollars for one local beer out of a can that we could buy for 7 dollars down the street. The audacity to charge 12 dollars for a beer is new to us
