807. Beef Fried Noodle with crispy THIN noodles! Also Orange chicken (Note not original packaging)
Hong 801. Hong-Kong Special Lo Mein
Updated menu 12/14/2021
the front of the restaurant
My itty bitty finger for contrast with these $20 measly walnut shrimp takeout (it wasn't even fried properly and cold)
These are not chow fun noodles. Chow fun has wide noodle, not fried chow mein noodles.
The "New" Hong Kong...
This is not chow fun and you can see how pathetic the dumplings are.
New menu from 11/2021. Prices have gone up quite a bit. It's no longer a place for cheap eats.

The chow mein was not as expected. No noodles? Just everything else? I was confused and will probably not order again from here simply because chow mein is my favorite dish and this did not meet expectations. Everything else was good. The Kung pao chicken had a nice spicy flavor to it. Maybe just ask more questions than we did to clarify before ordering.

My re-re-review of what was my favorite Chinese place in San Diego. The back story So during 2020, the original place was sold. I came in after they remodeled that place. Didn't really like the vibe and it took an hour to get food for dine in. I got my go to order, hot and sour soup and house special shrimp. I didn't like it and left after a few bites. I posted an updated review. The owners DM'ed me and offered to have me come back and try it again after sorting out some cooking issues and recipes. They even offered it free. I came back but did not bring up the review and offer for a free meal because that's not why I updated the review. They fixed the soup but they got a 1 stat review. The NewIt was Thanksgiving night and the 3 restaurants I searched on yelp, that were listed as open were closed. I turned to a rival food delivery app and saw Hong Kong open. I placed an order for pick up and headed over. When I got there it was empty, which was a far cry from the past. My order needed another 5 minutes and then it was walked out to me. The server was nice and told me there were chopsticks already in the bag. Looking around they got rid of some of the annoyances that were implemented. I got home and was ready for the moment of truth. I cracked the soup open and it actually looked like the old version. I noticed that there were no wonton chips included. I don't know if they still come with it, or if that was dropped. The soup was really good. I give kudos to them for improving it. Like I will come back just for the soup.I opened up the House Special Shrimp and was immediately let down. I included a side by side comparison picture so you can see the old style versus the new. It's night and day different. It was not bad, it just wouldn't be anything I would get again. My review coming up to 3 stars may not read great to some, but it was 1 star for being bad previously. The hot and sour soup is really good. The the House Special shrimp is not bad, it's just nothing I'll get again. I'll be back now that things have improved. My biggest critique of this updated place was that they bought it and kept the name, menu and replaced the staff and recipes. It's been a couple of years now and I'm sure the community has adjusted to the changes. Now I just think they need to highlight maybe their new specialities instead of using the ones that made the original HK popular late at night

Ordered delivery via Fantuan, it was delivered 30 min before the expected time, yeah!Food not spectacular but adequate as expected for a neighborhood diner. Beef with bell pepper ok, beef relatively tender, but excessive powder black pepper overall. Chicken with bean sprout, egg plant both adequate. Each entre came with a small white rice

I was meeting my client in my office. It's one of those long days meetings. Both of us was getting hungry, and I suggested to ordered in. Using door dash for the needs. It arrived at my office l mentioned to my client I have smelled the food. They thought I was hallucinating but sure enough DoorDash guy walked up. HahahahaAnd these hot dishes I ordered were heating up my office.I had to turn on the air to evened out the office air lol....I even broke out my wine bottle. I just got them few day ago from a wine club I belong to. In the end we enjoyed the yummy dishes that I have ordered. Shrimp fried rice. Shrimp lo mein, sizhuan Beef, and sweet Chicken. With my bottle of wine and coke cola ...I mixed my wine with the coke. Client never try mixed it, but they entertain with my idea and add coke to the wine. It bring out a sweeter taste! They exclaimed my wine has an high alcoholic taste! Well she ain't driving and I won't be driving soon. We both in the clear. HahahahahaThey were happy the wine reduced their stress level and putting them more at ease to ended their visit with me at my office.

AMAZING!! Best Chinese food I've had in my 8 years living in San Diego, we ordered the orange chicken, the combination fried rice and the Szechuan beef.. ALL 20/10! I could taste the fresh ingredients and they made the plates with a large quantity of protein I was so impressed. The orange chicken was the perfect ratio of chicken, batter and sauce and I could feel like this Chinese food wasn't greasy or overly salty. I absolutely loved this spot for take out and will definitely come back !!!!! ( in the photo is just 1 serving of all the stuff I ordered at home ) I ended up serving myself 3 times cause it was way too good! For reference I came on a Saturday around 6pm

Finally a spot that does pan fried noodles right in San Diego! The east coast usually has these thin crispy pan fried noodles, and thankfully this spot does too. Others use thick noodles which just aren't the same.Food was cooked very quickly (10 minutes for a called in pick-up order).Ordered beef pan fried noodles, hot and sour soup, and orange chicken. Prices are decent considering our economy.

HORRIBLE EXPERIENCE.Ordered the Beef Chow Fun at the counter and on top of the cost of the meal, I paid a 15% service charge - for no table service. I waited for 35minutes and no one from counter came to apologize nor check in with me nor offered me water. When I went up to tell them to cancel the order as I had to leave for work, they said they couldn't refund me as it was a credit card sale. They said they would take down my email address to inform me when they have reversed the charges. The manager wasn't around to reverse the charge. It's been THREE weeks and they have YET to respond. AVOID THIS ESTABLISHMENT. I came here for a good plate of noodles like in the old days, but it just isn't the same with the new inhospitable, inefficient and lousy management. AVOID AT ALL COSTS!

RATS RUNNING AROUND IN THE CEILING!Man oh man, this was just HORRIBLE! This past Saturday evening, July 27th, my 3 friends and I had a late dinner at Hong Kong. As usual the food was good, but when we finished we all looked up as what sounded like a mini horse race was happening above our heads. I was absolutely horrified. It sounded like 3 to 4 rats were scurrying around the entire ceiling. Just thinking about it makes me gag. I will never eat here again, unfortunately. Also WTH happened to this place? The so-called upgrades ain't that great, tbh. The place is cold and has no more soul. The guys behind the cash register are dry, apathetic and just not interested in their job. Also, why is the food always served in a to-go box? I miss the old Hong Kong with its old, worn furnishings, it's old employees who always had a scowl on their faces and the occasional smirk when you asked them for water. I miss May, the short lady who always asked how my mother was doing? I miss the old menu where they had the BBQ pork. I miss their hot mustard that would melt your face off if you weren't too careful. The place was always busy and had the same patrons day-in and day-out. The food is still good, but the elements that made this place great are now gone and we are now left with mediocre service and rats racing in the ceiling. How sad!
