Rice & Sambal

As a picky eater I was really on the edge about a pre-fix menu, especially one that was more seafood forward. But I stuck with it and I am so glad! The space itself is super cute, and the hostess was amazing, she put me at ease and was happy to switch my first course which was too seafood forward to a vegan alternative. My favorite course were the satay that were served on lemongrass sticks and the chicken with potato's were amazing. All in all a great BYOB experience! Go try and support our AAPI community!

Rice & Sambal is a new pop up/catering/private dinner operation from Diana Widjojo of Hardena fame. You may remember her #notapizza boxes during the pandemic filled to the brim with delicious Indonesian food - noodles, crabs, veggies, satay, anything goes in the pizza box (except pizza). She's been selling those out of Daankbar and doing a 7 course Rijsttafel dinner there as well this August.I was able to get a seat for the Rijsttafel and it was amazing! She was also doing vegan nights but we opted for the meat. We started the meal with 3 sambals and tapioca chips, absolutely loved the rendang bitterballen and the drank up all the broth after polishing off the mussels and clams. Our favorite dish was the pork belly followed closely by the chicken, but even the rice (flavored with coconut, pandan, lemongrass, and galangal) was delicious. It was also the prettiest kangkung I've ever seen!It's so refreshing and fun to have a fancy coursed out high end Indonesian meal with one beautiful and delicious dish after another, rather than the casual atmosphere of Hardena we're used to. The neon sign, menu, Indonesian decorations, and Indonesia coffee candy in the bathroom really added a special touch to Dankbaar. Phenomenal Indonesian food, for real. They provide generous portions and authentic flavors that also caters to folks who really know how good home cooked meals taste like.My partner and I have opposite diets-- I am vegetarian and they are omnivorous. This place catered to both of our diets in a flawless way. Each dish matched one another without compromising flavor, texture, and presentation. Love it.The space is small, so reserve a spot for you and your party so you know you got a spot.The bathroom is cute too, they have a little drawer in the restroom with unique gifts and treats to your liking! :)Definitely gonna be a spot I'll frequent.
