Delicious, delicious food! It's located on a one-way street so I recommend following the GPS to get there.I got there and service took a minute to get to me but once I was able to order, the service was good! Wasn't bad, but wasn't exceptional either. I got my food to-go and it took around 20 minutes which is about average for made to order food. And honestly, after tearing up my food, it made sense!!They be throwin it down back there!! The cabbage was seasoned to perfection. Juicy, and soft. So good!!!Mac n cheese was alright in my opinion. Not the best in town, respectfully but it wasn't bad at all. The catfish they wrap up in foil so it's still hot when you get home. I loved that they did this! I don't live far but it was still hot to touch when I started eating and I took the long way home! The catfish was SEASONED ok??? You don't need sauce but who I am a sauce person and it added a nice balance to the fish but the fish is a star of its own. Food is superb and I will def be going back!!Also, it was a bit pricey! I paid $33 for this meal plus a side of their banana pudding g which was a tad bit too sweet for my liking. I personally think they added sugar to the point where the sugar could no longer be dissolved in the pudding so it wasn't my favorite. I still finished the small side bowl it came in but I probably wouldn't order it again. I'm loving the history Mrs. White has in the valley because I had no idea! I love the foodie community and the spice Mrs. White creates in the valley!

MRS WHITE'S GOLDEN RULE CAFE . . . If you're a foodie in the Phoenix area, you know about Mrs. White's. For years I've heard people talk about this 60-year-old soul food restaurant. I have read articles and even seen news stories about the role it has played in the African American movement in Arizona, the food, and about Mrs. White herself. Back when it opened in 1964, the civil rights act had just passed, but change was still slow. Tempe was still a "sundown town." Mrs. White's was a place where everyone in the community could gather for a good meal and race didn't (and still doesn't) matter. When you step into this cafe, it seems like you've gone back in time, which I kind of love. It looks like I imagine it looked in 1964. There are photos, newspaper clippings, and awards from civil rights groups on the walls, and the operating hours are written on the wall in Sharpie.I don't really know much about soul food, but I do know our lunch was delish. Not sure what the secret ingredient is in that cole slaw, but OMG--it is seriously yummy! I'm not the biggest fried chicken fan, so I ordered the pork chop with Mac and cheese. It was tender and yummy. My son liked the chicken, but I didn't taste it. It's definitely worth a visit if for no other reason than the history.Fun fact: Mrs White's grandson, Lawrence, got his start cooking in this restaurant, before going on to open his own successful restaurants--Lolo's Chicken and Waffles.

THE BEST SOUTHERN FRIED CHICKEN AND SMOTHERED PORK CHOPS IN AZ!!!I've been going to Mrs White's since I was twelve years old and now at 28 anytime I go I feel like im going to my auntie's house for dinner. Real deal southern comfort hospitality, no frills bs or gimmicks. Everything off the menu is delicious and you are guaranteed to nap after a plate. In addition to fresh food, they offer amazing deserts and real deal Kool aid and iced tea. If you dont know, this is the original fried chicken spot that then birthed the famous Lo-Lo's chicken & waffles, as a separate fried chicken established ran by other members in the family. If you are lucky to get a table when its not busy, order everything they have and you will not be disappointed!

The food, the ambiance, the price..... I can't recommend this place .... The cornbread was dry maybe even old. You can do better at home. This place was not the business. Try them and come back and tell me your opinion. Everything was just dry. They have to do better or something different to make you want to come in. ( charged for a take to go cup )

Four of us came for an early dinner. Tea and cornbread for starters. The fried chicken had a nice crispy batter and the meat was juicy! The smothered chicken was smothered in flavorful gravy and was juicy too. The chicken fried steak was excellent. As we were eating we each would make humming noises.. and the sides... Mac and cheese.. full of flavorful cheese, green beans with onions and potato's, red beans (sweet and spice) over rice were phenomenal, potato salad was great too. Save room for the dessert of the day. The day we were there... peach cobbler and a crumble cake.. service was very kind and had great suggestions. EST. 1964... by MrsWhite...

Located on 8th Street & E. Jefferson Ave, it's been years since I've visited this place while visiting Phoenix. A short walk from my hotel, good southern food was on my appetite agenda.Mrs. White's has been voted for being Best of Phoenix Best Soul Food Restaurant and I can agree this place serves it up with good old fashioned home style cooking. This place makes it hearty, delicious and customer service is full of southern hospitality. But for those who are watching the calorie or fat intake, forget it because everything you've worked hard for and trying to maintain the numbers from your Doctor's office goes out the window!Since I have an addiction to fried foods, yes I'm going to order what I want and make sure that I have Mac & Cheese and green beans too!As promised, cornbread is also served with your meal. My Smothered Pork Chops was full of flavor and this might be my new go to dish since I'm always wanting something fatty and juicy after an intense training session in the gym! LOL!Peach Cobbler Pie was one of the desserts, instead I opted for the Louisiana Sweet Cake as coconut was one of the ingredients.

Had a taste for some Soul Food and Mrs White's Golden Rule Cafe was suggested. It was a Sunday and we were in town visiting family. We decided to give Mrs White's a try. This review is two months late, but I still remember the dining experience.I was hoping to have gotten some very memorable soul food, but that wasn't quite delivered. Perhaps my expectations were based off of my own cooking and other Soul Food establishments I've tried from all over. The food tried didn't leave a lasting impression. The food seemed to have been lacking seasoning. The pork chops were fried just right. The liver was a bit dry. The greens were okay. The Mac n cheese wasn't creamy or cheesy. I sampled a piece of fried chicken that was fried to the gods! However, I wished the seasoning matched the crispiness of the batter. And I'll stop here. Overall, I went, saw and ate. I would like to try other restaurants in the surrounding area. I can't say that I would recommend eating here. The service was probably, by far, the most memorable thing that sticks. The lady who waited tended to the counter top area was a joy!!! She was personable, interactive and bubbly! The ambiance is what you would expect from what some would call "a hole in the wall." It had the bar stool counter top seating, I think some booths, standard table and chairs, pictures of the owner and maybe some celebrity sightings. It appeared to be clean and kept up. Give it a try for yourself!!!

From the moment you step in, you are greeted with the most warm and friendly staff ever! This family run, independent restaurant is an icon of the Phoenix food scene.Today was my first visit and I am so glad that I was able to stop at my all-time Arizona bucket list restaurant. I ordered the Chicken Fried Steak, with sweet potatoes, mac and cheese, and the mandatory corn bread. My beverage of choice was the iconic Kool Ade.When my plate arrived, I was in shock at how big the Chicken Fried steak was. It was delicious and expertly prepared with the proper amount of seasoned gravy. The side's were also a nice compliment to this fabulous meal. Do your self a favor, call your friends to join you and enjoy a wonderful culinary experience.

The service was great. We had actually showed up a little early on Saturday so they weren't quite open. After being parkied for a few mins, the chef actually had walked out and asked if we knew what we were going to order so he could get started on it. After walking in, we were instructed to sit wherever. Right at the front there are pictures hanging of Shaq & Mrs White as well as Mark Henry also dining at this place. The place was clean enough, but clearly outdated. Flooring & seating could definitely use a revamp. Gentleman was quick to take our drink order. Their beverage choice is limited. Its only water, cherry kool aid, lemonade & iced tea. Now being diabetic, and them being out of iced tea, I got to drink water. It would be nice if they could at least offer canned beverages with more sugar free options.Menu said oxtails were of limited availability, so I tried my luck. Score. They had some. My lunch date opted for catfish. Now being that the entrees are all a flat rate of $23 each (Oxtails = $30), I expected the plates to be a little fuller. Pictures uploaded for reference. The mac n cheese was good, surprisingly so was the catfish. (I'm usually not a fan). The rice was served with a gravy, which was bland, so the flavor was that of just eating plain white rice. The same gravy was used on the oxtails, but the meat itself had good flavor, so again, the gravy was negligible. I kept diggin into my date's mac, so decided to order an additional side of it. Sides are $6.50 each. Same amount that was served on the original entree plate. I'm glad I was able to eat at this historical establishment. However, I don't believe I would return. Unless I'm at Chase Field (across the street) and had a hankerin for walking-distance soul food.

When arriving this building looked like it belonged in Alabama or Georgia, it reminded me of other Soul Food restaurants. After stepping through the door we were greeted with a smile and have a seat. Our server was prompt and took our order. This young lady is part of the family and proud of that fact as I asked, it is very refreshing to see family members keeping the tradition going. It took a little time for our food but it's fried chicken, made to order and it didn't disappoint, crispy crust, juicy chicken very good greens and a wonderful sweet potato side dish. By the way the young ladies kept the restaurant clean they cleaned floors and counter tops between orders. Phoenix is blessed to have a bonfide Soul Food restaurant
