Maxwells Carribean American Take Outs

I don't live close enough to any Jamaican spots, sadly. This place was shown to me a few years ago. Haven't been here in a while, but recently went. The food is still amazing. Very authentic in my opinion. Oxtail is of course expensive, due to the times, $30 for a large platter. The other platters are priced fairly though, between $15-$20. They also sell some meat only platters, like jerk chicken. Not necessarily the best neighborhood, but it's a grab and go place anyway. Only real downfall is sometimes they sell out of certain things.

The people who work here are nicer than a lot of places. Generous portion sizes. Some of the sides are better than others but most importantly for me the jerk chicken is perfectly tender and saucy. They only had a large platter size available for the oxtail and I wasn't completely hungry so I'm saving that for next time. That could be a game changer. Haaa. We shall see.

Wanted some oxtails and I remembered that my cousin had told me about this place a few months ago. So I called first because it waa Saturday night and I wanted to make sure that they still had some available. They said yes!! So about an hour later I get there and the store had a few customers but not really crowded. So of course, in my head, I'm thinking, food must be alright. Get to the counter and place order, large oxtail platter with rice/peas, greens & mac/cheese. Extra gravy. Since the server was a female, I waa expecting an eye roll and attitide, cause you know, I asked for extra gravy. Those who know, you don't get extra gravy without the side eye. She said no problem but said no greens so I changed to yams for my 3rd side.Only waited for 15 minutes for my platter which was good and heavy!! She wrapped the container in two bags because the gravy was leaking a little. Ger my food home and can't wait to eat. Open up the platter and see pur delight. They were very generous with the oxtails and gravy. There was also a good helping of yams and mac/cheese. They put the oxtails on top of the rice/peas. The food was very good. Everything was on point. However, the mac/cheese could have had more cheese. Overall, this place was good and I would most definitely go back and thanks for staff for not giving me the stank eye!!!

Where do I even begin, the food served at Maxwells is so delicious. The quality of their food is very good, the chicken is my absolute favorite (curry to be exact). My favorite sides are the Mac n' cheese and the yams! The jerk chicken is also pretty good, though it is spicy as heck!

I've had this place twice. The first time I got the curry chicken and the second time I got the oxtails. Both times I got the rice and beans but I've had the cabbage one time and the string beans another. The curry chicken was pretty good and so was the oxtails. The string beans were bomb! And the cabbage was not very good to me. However, their customer service at the store is SUPERB! There's a young girl that works there and she is always so friendly and nice. I will always order with her. The platter sizes are your regular Carribean food sizes. They can last you a day or two if you get a medium or large. I will definitely be back. I really enjoy this place.

Good food even better portions. Takes debit cards!!! Which is a plus. Definitely a hidden gem.

My cousin recommended this place and yes indeedy, sweetly, this place was so worth the wait in line. Once we ordered, we talked with the gentleman who fixed our orders and he told us it was a business started by his grandparents and they are so loyal to their craft and the neighborhood, they make great efforts to not run out of food. The portions are HE MAN size. The jerk chicken, ox tails, cabbage, greens, beans and rice are highly recommended. Definitely a hidden jewel in North Philly.
