Ade B. "I ordered from Lee's Deli because I know they have carrot cake made by the mythical "carrot cake man". The carrot cake man has been selling his carrot cakes on public transportation for many years. I didn't just order the carrot cake. I ordered a sampling of desserts along with an Italian hoagie. It is a deli after all. The Italian hoagie was a good hoagie, but nothing memorable. It will not be my go-to spot for an Italian. It seems none of the desserts are made in house, but they definitely know where to get them from The carrot cake was the same cake I remembered from years back. Very moist with the best cream cheese icing I've ever tasted. The red velvet and pound cake were also outstanding cakes. Right up there with the best Amish cakes. The sweet potato pie was just OK. I wouldn't get that again. I had 3 outstanding desserts, so no complaints there. But the deli part doesn't seem to be up to that very high bar."

Jeff H. "APJ Texas Wieners is a little hole in the wall that I'm guessing has been around a really long time at its north of Market Street location. It's the kind of place when you sit at the counter, you will observe regulars coming in and out. Most customers are recognized by the couple running the café who know what their customers are eating and drinking before they even order. It seems people from all walks of life patronize here. Well on the food front, the hot dog or eponymous Texas Wiener was actually pretty good. The fish cake though was only okay...not as 'fishy' as I like. Everything appeared to be kept very clean. And best of all, a lunch or snack here will be kind on your wallet. The prices are def on the totally inexpensive side. I guess these are the reasons why this 'hole in the wall' survives despite being so close to the crowded Reading Market.Note - I don't think I've ever included a spelling lesson in a review before so here's a first. The correct spelling of the main food here is Wiener (not Weiner). Wiener indicates that something has its roots in Vienna which the hot dog has. Weiner indicated that something has its roots in wine which the hot dog really doesn't derive from although I have eaten wieners with wine in my life. Americans have constantly mixed up the spellings Wiener and Weiner for generations so you will see both used - but with my Viennese connection, I def have to use 'Wiener'!!"

Nifty Fifty’s - Newtown Square

Nifty Fifty’s - Newtown Square

★★★☆☆ 3.2 (41) • $$

Brian C. "Strange stepping foot in here. Growing up in Newtown Square this was my goto McDonald's for 30 years. I had my first chicken McNugget at this location. When it shut down, this lot was vacant for years and we waited and waited for something to open here. I'm happy and sad that it is a Nifty Fifty's. Happy because of how good the burgers are and how convenient it is. And sad for the same reasons. I'm gonna be fat. They opened this week and the crowds have been crazy. Many people have been waiting for this opening and many of them have been showing up! I went at 830 and it was packed, they said it was still the dinner rush. It started to thin out around 9, but there was still a steady flow of people headed in. I picked up 2 burgers, fries, and a shake. Took about 20 minutes to get it, but I was expecting a wait given how crowded it was. The service was great, especially with the crowd. Everyone I interacted with was friendly and helpful. Lexi and Keira were working the to go orders and had smiles for everyone. Big plus when it's so busy and people are hungry and waiting, a friendly face goes a long way. The ambience is very cool. Black and white checkers, loads of neon, and paper hats. Definitely a throwback to the Fifties. They have plenty of seating inside, including a small bar area, and a few tables outside which is where I ate my to go order. My food did not disappoint. The burgers were great, small, but bigger than a slider. I'm thinking they may use Velveeta. I didn't ask if they have other cheese options but was happy with the standard. I'd have gotten a third burger if it wasn't 9:00. The fries seem like fresh cut and were good but needed some salt IMO. The shake...chocolate. At first it had an off taste to me but it grew on me as I drank it. They are served in odd metallic looking cups, but they work well at keeping the shake cool. All in all it was a fantastic experience despite the crowd and well worth the wait. Looking forward to going back when it is less crowded. It that may be a while! Welcome to the Square, we are happy to have you!"

I stick to my favorite chicken finger sandwich or their gyros. The food is usually pretty good and fairly consistent.I usually order in person during work lunch hours, not many people are in line at that time. Generally the lady is nice but when I order I usually feel a slightly rushed interaction. At times my order has been missing something in the bag and a wrong order once. The lady gets defensive so it gets annoying at times when I just want my correct order. For that reason I give them a lower rating. The outdoor seating is a nice bonus on summer days and the beautiful artwork is the icing on the cake. Good spot for what it is just hope their service improves."

This cheesesteak was L-O-A-D-E-D! After placing my order the chef got started on my order and seeing how much steak she loaded onto the grill, it was definitely impressive. She just grabbed a handful of steak over her head to the grill and started cooking asap. I asked for two steaks, one with provolone, mushrooms, and onions, the other with wiz, both came filled to the brim with steak. Definitely go for a generous sprinkle of salt and pepper at the end for better flavor, and surprisingly, for me anyway, I was asked distinctly if I wanted mayo, so I said why not. A dash of ketchup was the final addon to this Philly treat. The final verdict, tender chopped juicy steak, no gristle, not too cheesy (which I prefer), nicely cooked and not overdone. I definitely rank this is as a Philly best. For about $12-$14 a steak this was not just tasty but economical as well. Now, this was a bit off the beaten path for sure and the neighborhood, well, get your steak and go. There isn't much eat in space anyway. The good news is that a great cheesesteak will stay a great cheesesteak for a while."

I'm confused."And so we set out to try them all on a pizza crawl. We shared a cheese slice at each stop in order to pace ourselves. Lorenzo's was our last stop. I don't think I'd ever had their pizza before. After the gargantuan slices oozing with cheese at the other two places, Lorenzo's slice was aesthetically the least impressive. The slice was a reasonable portion--I can't call it small--and was just $2.50. (An XL 18" pie is only $14.)But what it lacked in looks this slice made up for in flavor. We both liked it best of the three. The sauce was the secret weapon. I found something comforting and familiar about it. It wasn't sweet and had more tomato flavor. You could also see the herbs and spices on the slice, which improved the flavor. The crust was a bit thicker than the others but was crispy and good."

On one of my morning walks to Penn Treaty Park I decided to stop by and see for myself if the sausages lived up to the hype. I ordered a Sausage, egg & cheese. It comes on like a hoagie roll. I also saw a tasty looking apple danish and grabbed that too. I sat in the park to eat my meal. I am happy to report that the sausage lived up to the hype. It is just the right amount of hot, not overpowering. And It's very juicy. The sandwich was made with the perfect ratio of sausage to egg to cheese. I devoured it! It was soo good! The roll was slightly chewy, which makes me think it wasn't the freshest. The apple danish was a tasty treat I'm glad that I ordered to end my meal with. The big negative to Johnny's Hots is that it's a cash only business. That's ridiculous in 2022. You lose far more business than you save in fees when u don't accept credit cards. We ordered a few appetizers which were pretty delicious, but the star of the show for me was their spend on a Nashville hot open face chicken sandwich. Gerald S. "Haven Local sits within the Creek Side Market building next to Creek Side Restaurant & Deli. It appears to be Indian owned/operated by a friendly chef who was only to happy to make me any breakfast I wanted within his inventory of supplies. That turned out to be something like a sausage egg & cheese sandwich on a oversized brioche roll. It was fantastic, but so overloaded that he soon brought me a plate, real flatware and an extra roll to reconstruct the sammy if necessary (I brought it home). The knife and fork simplified the eating and kept my hands free of the original dripping mess that I tried to pick up and covered my fingers in runny egg and delicious sauce , but made this creation so distinctive. It was an excellent mess! Coffee was secured next door at the Creek Side Restaurant & Deli, which shared the large market building. Obviously, these smaller retailers rent from the market and brewery that round out the tenants. The scattered tables made for a very casual atmosphere, and invited people to hang out and enjoy themselves. I certainly did. Haven Local went out of its way to accommodate my short stay, and I appreciated the effort. Food spans a cross between gastro pub and dive bar (read: soups, chili, wings, steak tip sandwiches; quesadilla, nachos, and a variety of sandwiches.) Prices are reasonable and sandwiches come with fries or salad. The beer list is pretty long for a neighborhood watering hole. I snagged a pint of a great black lager, and also tried the Fiddlehead white which was nice too. There were about eight brews on draft and double that number in cans and bottles, plus ciders. So, after walking the RTM a couple of times I settled on an Italian hoagie from LUHV. A very friendly man with beautiful locs waited on me. There wasn't a wait so my sandwich was ready pretty quickly. I believe it was $13 which I consider pricey, but most vegan food is expensive. In the past, I've always purchased my lunch meat and made my hoagies at home, so I was curious to see how this hoagie compared. The sandwich was a good size. The sandwich came with a couple of different types of vegan Italian lunch meat, vegan provolone, lettuce, tomatoes and lots of onions. It also came with a smidgen of vegan mayo. (Is there a vegan mayo shortage?) The roll was very dense, and I'm sad to say that the sandwich was very dry. The bread completely took over the sandwich, and the bread to lunch meat ratio was completely off. I was really hungry, so I did finish the sandwich, but it didn't knock my socks off. Needless to say, I was disappointed. So, in the future if I can get my hands on LUHV's lunch meat I'll make my own sandwich, at home. Otherwise, I'll skip this spot next time I'm at the RTM."

There definitely was no provolone on the sandwich. The cutlet had been precooked and was put on the grill and chopped up to reheat and then placed in the oven which dried out the roll and didn't lend any more benefit to the sandwich. I had pretty much given up - don't get me wrong, there's decent pizza to be found in Philly, and I still love Taconneli's, but finding a New York-style pie done right seemed to be a lost cause. Until last night. The reviews and photos of pizzas from Enjay's were intriguing enough to make it our pick for this week's takeout. The prices are a bit higher than the norm, but what would you expect from a pizza place off the Penn campus? But also, IMHO, totally worth it.After picking up our pie we had a 15 minute walk home, but I had to open the box to get a whiff of the fresh out of the oven pizza, and that was the first good sign - total nostalgia hit to the beloved Brooklyn pizza of my childhood. For the best experience, you really need to eat the pizza on the spot, but I treasure my routine too much to sacrifice it to a slight improvement in taste, so I didn't get to try it until we got home. Reheated, it was still pretty awesome- the crust is VERY thin, and the cheese is VERY ample. Two of the smallest slices from the large pie and I was definitely done for the night. The cheese is what most reminds me of New York - the mozzarella and seasoning blend were perfect. The tomato sauce was pretty great too, and while the crust was a little thinner than I'd prefer, just be sure to reheat it in the oven to get it crispy, or if you're doing things the right way (which I wasn't) it should work pretty great if eaten on the spot. The one aspect of the experience that wasn't worth it was the garlic knots. They were mediocre, but really, just dont bother. $18 for a large plain pie? Worth it? $4 for three garlic knots? Please, the good places in Brooklyn will give you a half dozen for that price and they'll be a lot better, too. But they weren't disappointing enough to detract from a 5-star review.
