After a day of cleaning out our office spaces, our team headed out to shovels for a much needed break. Shovels is a bar that does classic cocktails well, very well. Think manhattans, gold rushes and perfectly balanced whiskey sours. If there's one thing they get right, it's the whiskey/bourbon based drinks. Bartender was swamped but still efficient, slinging those drinks like there's no tomorrow. As the evening matured, so did the crowd and before you know it, the place was packed with patrons. Will come back once my liver recovers. Until then..

Great hang out bar to catch a game, watched Warriors win, and enjoyed the heck out of their double smash burger. Top quality smash, in a great sportsbar atmosphere, that'll keep me coming back. Nice curated microbrew menu too.

We were a group of 9 stopping in for a round on a Friday night around 9pm after dinner nearby, celebrating a friend's birthday. Got the vibe the bartender was not happy to see us come in. Maybe tired and ready to go home, but the bar was open for another hour. After some awkward/unwelcoming interactions with the bartender, we were ready to close out the bill and finally received some warmth from him -- just as he was turning the machine around for us to select a tip. Definitely won't be back and won't be recommending it to others looking for a place to celebrate.

While the area isn't the best of areas, this bar is a hidden gem and YOU need to visit. They have darts and a pool table, and good sours (as well as other beer & liquor). They have food too which is also pretty good. Service was prompt, they have these really cool leather sofas in here too. It's part classy, part dive and I love it.

Went to shovels bar to get food. I was lucky enough to catch Plated by the bay's very delicious food. The Sisig nachos were incredible!! Definitely a game changer. I hope more menu items come out. Compliments to the chef! I wasn't even able to take a photo because the food was devoured in an instant.

It doesn't look like much outside but once inside, you'll find Shovel's to be a good ole neighborhood bar. There are some TVs for the sports fans, tables and seats configured for small groups, tall tables and stools, and seating at the bar. Then there's the other side of the bar, with a pool table and more seating. The nice bartenders serve up smooth cocktails (I like a Vieux Carré or Sazerac) and the kitchen sends out solid burgers and fries. If you're in/around Civic Center, Shovel's is a convenient spot for drinks and dinner before a show or a happy hour gathering after work.

I will always choose a good vibe over manufactured ambiance. Plenty of bars go out of their way to come off as fancy, pretentious, swanky. *yawn* Shovels is definitely not luxurious, but that's what makes it amazing. The drinks are exceptional and food impressively good. I stopped by on a Thursday afternoon and they took a handful of phones in food orders while I was there, which speaks to the quality of their offerings. Really enjoyed the relaxed atmosphere and will definitely be back.
