Spontaneously decided to go here for a solo date after a long day of work. No wait, which was nice!I have such mixed feelings about the sushi though. The bluefin lovers roll and the seared salmon nigiri were both pretty good. The roll had seared tuna on top and some truffle oil, which was not too overpowering. The salmon was nice and soft, though I would have preferred some extra flavor. It also came with a bowl of miso soup which was nice and comforting. The spicy scallop handroll though was the worst handroll I've ever had in my life! There was so little scallop and spicy sauce wasn't even mixed in. Seems like they just squeezed some sriracha on top of the minuscule scallop pieces. And the cucumber was too hard and almost a bit tart! If I had left with just the roll and the salmon nigiri, I would have given it 4 stars, but I would give the handroll a 0 if I could... so we are down to a 3 lol.I also didn't realize until the next day when I was thinking about it a bit more that the prices here are insanely high for the quality! The bluefin lovers roll was $25, the nigiri was $11, and that awful handroll was $12! You can get a much more substantial specialty roll and nigiri/handrolls for a fraction of the price at other spots!

Went here to catch up with a friend. There's plenty of seating inside. It was a windy day but there's also seating available outside, which would be great for a sunnier day! The service was fast; we ordered and got our food quickly. The rolls themselves were delicious! The menu is pretty big so I'm confident anyone could find something they like here.

First time here and will now be our usual place. Ramen was good; leaked lobster was yummy; miso soup was tasty and the California roll was not the usual you get from other Japanese restaurants. Place was nice. Service was great and staff members were attentive.

My wife and I loved this place, Judoku Sushi Rockridge. I recognize the Bay Area has some of the best sushi restaurants in the country. My five-star rating for Judoku is simply because I think it's a fantastic, casual, family-friendly, neighborhood sushi joint. Japanese comfort food. The food and service were excellent. If you love sushi, I recommend this place if it's convenient to you.Judoku has two locations. This is the second. It opened in February 2018 on College Ave in North Oakland/Rockridge, a stretch with several good restaurants. The original Judoku opened in November 2014 on the more popular Piedmont Ave, closer to downtown: https://www.yelp.com/biz/judoku-sushi-oakland.My sister introduced us to Judoku Rockridge. Before Judoku Rockridge moved into its current space, it used to be another sushi restaurant that she and my brother-in-law liked, Rikyu: https://www.yelp.com/biz/rikyu-oakland.This was not a very big restaurant before the pandemic. However, during the pandemic, Judoku replaced Rikyu and, like some of its College Ave neighbors, expanded significantly with outdoor seating on the sidewalk and street. We sat outside on the dog-friendly patio. The seats on the patio were mostly covered and there were plenty of heat lamps. Some of the tables on the street had an incline due to the uneven pavement, so it was a bit annoying. It's one reason we decided to take a table on the sidewalk instead. You can park on the street (College Ave) directly outside the restaurant. It's metered by the City of Oakland, $2/hour, Monday-Saturday, 8am-6pm except holidays. We parked for free after hours in the nearby library parking lot across the street, next to Holy Basil Pho. We saw a car with a smashed-in window there so remove/hide all your belongings. Like other big metros around the country, car break-ins are a normal occurrence in the Bay Area.I loaded up on nigiri (my favorite when it comes to sushi) while my wife, sister, nieces, and brother-in-law enjoyed other food like rolls, udon noodles, and gyoza dumplings. Here's what we got:Appetizers* Gyoza (6 pieces for $9) - pork potstickers (veggie is an option too)* Scallop Crudo ($19) - Hokkaido scallop, shoyu ikura, tobikoNigiri (2 pieces per order)* Chu Toro ($15) - medium fatty bluefin tuna* Ama Ebi ($14) - sweet shrimp* Inari ($6) - seasoned rice in fried tofu pouchSushi Entree* Nigiri Sushi Combo #2 (10 pieces for $42) - 2 pieces each of maguro, sake, hamachi, and 4 pieces of seasonal chef's choice (details below)Classic Rolls* 49ers ($16) - salmon over California roll (avocado, imitation crab), lemon slicesJudoku Rolls* Honda ($18) - salmon, hamachi, and avocado rolled with unagi and unagi sauce* Polar Bear ($17) - spicy tuna and cucumber rolled with escolar and jalapenos* Super California ($16) - unagi over California roll with unagi sauce and Macadamia nutsKid's Meal* Plain Udon ($12) - plain noodles in brothWe thought all of the food was terrific. In general, I loved everything about the nigiri. It was classic, traditional nigiri, not dressed up or pretentious; simply fresh, thick, and delicious expert cuts of high-quality fish. In my Nigiri Sushi Combo #2, the maguro (tuna), sake (salmon), and hamachi (yellowtail) were above-average quality. Sure, they're usually the cheapest and most common types of nigiri, but Judoku set themselves apart by serving better-quality fish. I liked that the chef left a little bit of skin on both the salmon and yellowtail slices. It's a fine attention to detail that also sets Judoku apart. The four pieces of "seasonal" chef's choice that completed the combo were two pieces of madai (Japanese sea bream) and one piece each of hirame (halibut) and kampachi (amberjack). I'm allergic to shrimp so I told our server no shrimp. I'm not sure if the chef would've included it, but my sister did order some separately. The sea bream, halibut, and amberjack were consistent in taste and texture with the other fish: superb. There was even a bit of "bonus" sashimi placed at the end of my plate. I believe it was an end of the halibut, a.k.a. olive flounder. The Chu Toro and Inari were also delectable. You can't go wrong with those. My sister and wife loved the Ama Ebi, which included the shrimp heads. Most sushi restaurants don't include the heads. The Scallop Crudo was outstanding. It was a wonderful combination of ingredients - scallop, ikura, tobiko - and the presentation was beautiful. Everything was presented beautifully, really. The rolls looked and tasted very good. Again, fresh and high-quality ingredients all around. My favorite rolls were the Honda and Super California rolls, probably because of the unagi (freshwater eel). The eel and sauce added sweet and savory flavors to each roll. Also, I think the thin lemon slices on the 49ers roll were meant to be eaten. Our server was Connie and she was great. She was nice, attentive, and understood exactly what we wanted. Fantastic service.

We seek out the best bento box locations around town, and so decided upon Judoku since we had yet to dine there. Located right on College Ave in Rockridge, amongst many restaurants, it is hard to choose sometimes. But, we were set on a bento box for dinner. They have a permanent parklet for outdoor dining, which is great, and each 'section' has a barrier between them so you feel like you are in your own little booth outside. Our servers were nice and efficient. The bento boxes were well laid out and contained a good amount of food. The teriyaki chicken and the teriyaki beef were both a bit overcooked which we did not care for. Everything else was pretty good. This bento does not come with salad, but they do give you edamame in it's place. Also, the seaweed used in the miso soup and the California rolls was super thick and kinda tough and chewy. Not sure if it was just this batch, but it was not very appealing.

Oof, make sure you double check the location before leaving! This is their 2nd location, a lot smaller, but still good food and service.I had a heavy late lunch filled with carbs and didn't want to over do it. I ordered the geisha roll which does not have rice. This dish was beautiful, light, and fresh. Of course I couldn't help but try some of the other rolls my friend had ordered. Loved the hot sake as well. Good service =)

I ate at Judoku recently and chose to sit outside. I was craving some udon and decided to get the Seafood Udon. The noodle had a good consistency and the flavor of the broth felt very comforting. There was also a LOT of stuff in the bowl, including onions, lettuce, and carrots (whaaaat?!?!). Yes, these vegetables are rarely found in udon, and while it made my udon heartier, I felt like there was way too much of it. I suppose the upside was that I was able to save about half of it as leftovers for the next day (albeit in a plastic to-go container). One of the servers was nice about me using my own utensils. As they brought the eating utensils and menu outside to our table, I said I didn't need their chopsticks (because I had brought my own), and they obliged while still giving me a napkin (which worked out since I didn't bring one of my own). ECO NOTES (Dine-In)Dine-In Dishware: Reusable bowl and metal cups for waterNapkins: Single-use disposable paper napkinsUtensils: Reusable spoon plus disposable wooden chopsticks

Very cute place with indoor and outdoor seatingsInterior fits about six small tables and outdoor has about four booths that seats about six people. If you want to dine indoor you must have proof of vaccinations. The fried oysters were fried to its perfection, crispy outside and soft inside The salmon mango salad was refreshing but needed more dressing The lucky 7 roll hits home with not too much starch but enough proteins to fill you up very light and the hamachi was fresh not too saucy. Perfect touch.

We were looking for a place to eat lunch when we walked into this restaurant around 1:55. We quickly ordered as they were about to close at 2:30. Within minutes after being seated we ordered tonkotsu ramen, which was delicious, and out the door by 2:29! Very quaint but in a neighborhood with very limited parking. We will definitely come again!
