Music playing at the time was 70s soul (definitely heard a Fatboy Slim sample). Aside from the bar area, there's the main area/dancefloor where shows are held, a pool table, and an outdoor patio area. Pool table was nice and the house cue sticks were in great condition. Be aware that sometimes the cue ball gets stuck but the bartender was nice enough to help when asked. It's a nice bar to have a chill conversation with, at least around early evening time."

Last night I let the bartender choose my whiskey and she picked a winner. Drink was delicious and not overly priced.Parking is usually relatively easy especially compared to San Francisco. Crowd is eclectic and always a bit different depending on the band, but always friendly and warm. I think a lot of neighborhood people go there. I'm so happy that they have managed to survive Covid. Julie C. "This beautiful cultural center has been home to some of the Bay Area's most influential dance instructors including its namesake as well as beloved mestre do samba Carlos Aceituno, deceased founder of Carnaval faves Fogo na Roupa. My own samba school, SambaFunk, also holds classes here. While ventilation can be a problem, these beautiful dance rooms are a great place to learn new dance styles. I recently took part in a Brasilian orixa movement workshop by Dimensions Dance Theatre led by the wonderful Isaura. It was a spiritual, empowering workshop and I look forward to attend the next special event. The Malonga, as we regulars call it, has recently come under fire by ignorant new residents who have made complaints about the noise. You moved near a cultural center: you are going to hear drums, music, and laughter. It won't go all hours; the City staff punctually comes in at 6pm on Sundays to move us along. During our long hot summer, the windows were sealed shut, supposedly to combat the pigeon problem. In over three years of dancing at the Malonga, I've not seen so much as a feather in the second floor studio. Thankfully, the Malonga is going strong and continuing its tradition of fostering Oakland's cultural communities. The staff does more than monitor the front door. I once left my new pair of jazz sneakers at SambaFunk. I called the main line and left a voicemail and assumed I'd need to reorder the shoes. I received a call back and was told to see the security staff about the lost and found. I still have my shoes! A few tips for newcomers: Parking is at a premium. Be patient and circle a few times for a street spot. Or take BART and walk over from 12th street or Lake Merritt stations. Sign in and out at the front desk. Though showers are available, I'd be sure to pack shower shoes. Do research into the type of class you would like to take. The Malonga hosts a wide variety of options ranging from Afro-Haitian to hiphop. Wear the right shoes. Many prefer to dance barefoot so be mindful of not stomping on your classmates. Also you don't want to damage the floors for fellow dancers."

Usually they have a good line up of concerts and comedy headliners, so check the calendar. The Fox Oakland has excellent viewing from the orchestra and lodge seating, not many bad seats in the house, and features indie acts (Mitski, Lucy Dacus, Phoebe Bridgers) when they come to town. I've been to a few shows here, and they've all been fully seated and comfortable, with no standing room or pit. There are several bars throughout the venue and it never actually feels too full. I haven't tasted a better domestic Barbera, Grenache, Mourvedre or Tempranillo from anywhere else! Especially from one winemaker under one roof! Keep in mind I said DOMESTIC...in most cases local as well! These varietals rotate on a regular basis and aren't always available. I'm always hopeful that some of the aforementioned varietals are available whenever I pay them a visit. Then there are the classics like the brilliant Bordeaux style blend Deb-ru-vée, Phil-osophy or Preston. Long story short, I discovered Longevity on accident. It was the last stop on a Livermore wine tasting tour. Oddly enough everything we tried was good! I had to return on another day; in a better, more alert state of mind and try every thing again. Annnddd...the only thing I got was confirmation of our previous journey!! Everything was brilliant! Over the years Longevity expanded their tasting room, added regular events on the weekends and grew operations to offer their wines nationwide. My husband and I walked across the way over to Spangler's to pick up sandwiches for dinner and we brought it with us to eat (thank goodness it was okay to bring outside food). Toni M. "Yesterday was Nina's birthday and last night I took her to a concert by the Brad Mehldau Trio to celebrate. Because it was Veteran's Day, all the restaurants on campus were closed, as was the Student Union. We decided to have early dinners separately so we could secure parking in the garage under Zellerbach and not have to walk any great distance. I picked her up about 5:45 and drove over. The lights were on in the Student Union, giving us hope of a comfortable place to sit, but that was illusory. It was closed. There was an adorable young man at the entrance to the garage, collecting $18 to park. I showed him my blue hang tag and he asked if I had a reservation. There are six ADA parking spaces. I told him no, that I didn't know it was an option. I will know for next time. We drove down into the garage and I found a space by the stairs and ramp up to Zellerbach. There probably is an elevator, but I didn't see where it was. We walked up and saw that the ticket office was still dark. We walked over to the Student Union and that's when we discovered it was locked. There were a couple of wooden logs w/ seats carved out of them in the plaza and we took spots facing each other. They were surprisingly comfortable. It was chilly but not cold. After half an or so hour I saw the lights on in the box office so we walked over. The nice young woman in the box office said we could probably sit inside while we waited for the doors to open to the auditorium. We walked to the open door to the lobby and spoke w/ another nice young woman who asked if we were there for pre-concert dining and we said we hadn't been aware it was being offered. She said we couldn't come in for another 7 minutes. I asked if it would be possible for us to come in and just sit down somewhere out of the way. She went and checked w/ someone and said we could take the elevator to the 4th floor, which we appreciated greatly. We walked over to the elevator, where we were greeted by an older man who asked us what we needed. We told him and he pushed the elevator buttons and sent us on our way, saying he'd see us later. When we got to the 4th floor we found the women's restroom right beside the elevator, a welcome sight. We used it and then sat at a table overlooking the lobby. Nina bought us cups of tea which tasted and felt good after sitting out in the chilly night. Eventually the doors to the auditorium were opened and we took the elevator back down where we were welcomed back by the man who had sent us upstairs. We went into the auditorium, where we found our seats, two in from the aisle. By happenstance the two seats on the aisle remained empty so after the first number we moved into them, a great improvement because it got us out from behind the two tall men sitting in front of us. The concert was wonderful and I enjoyed watching other audience members enjoying the music, including the two tall men. When the concert was over we returned to the car and were able to leave the garage more quickly and easily than expected. Alan and I had returned to Zellerbach many times since my initial review, enjoying many concerts until the pandemic shut things down. Last night was lovely and I'm sure Nina and I will return in the future."

The venue didn't really stand out to me compared to other event centers in the city, but it made for a positive experience, even in a not-so-appealing location of SF.Entry and security check was quick and easy. The bar on the second level had no line early in the evening, unlike downstairs, but service was slow. The diet soda I ordered was poured from a can and served in a reusable plastic r.cup that had instructions to return in a bin after use (r.world). The staff behind the counter didn't seem that enthusiastic about being there, but she wasn't rude. Got GA balcony tickets, and the worker in the auditorium said I could sit anywhere I wanted in the balcony section (upper or lower) just not the loge section which were reserved seats... she said I could even join the GA crowd on the floor standing in front of the stage. Cool, but confusing, wish they communicated that before ticket purchase. Might be cuz it wasn't a full house for this particular concert. The seats themselves were very basic, comfortable enough but a somewhat dated cloth surface. Lovely art on the ceiling of the theater, and the use of lighting on stage added great visual effects to the show. The sound system was not the greatest for the opening act, Brigitte Calls Me Baby. The music was rather echoey and lacked clarity. But that didn't stop the band from setting the mood with a few of their hits as well as a cool rock rendition of Careless Whisper. And sound check was extensive before the headliners did their thing on stage, so the sound was fixed, allowing The Airborne Toxic Event to put on an enjoyable show with an awesome setlist including some of my faves like Changing, Come On Out, and Sometime Around Midnight. One of the things I especially love about this band is the sound of the violin in their music. It was so sweet during the performance, a treat for my ears.
