Fish King

Love this place! Basing that this is a straightforward neighborhood fish fry.I've been coming to Fish King for a couple of years now. It's one of my stops when I visit from Portland as well. This is definitely not a fancy place, but you will get full! It never disappoints. Then again, I never have gotten the snapper, which seems to be the point of contention amongst reviews. I stick to my shrimp, fish, and oysters. The portions are generous and I simply love their cornmeal coating. Makes the Southern part of me flutter. It's always tasty, and I am always full by the time I finish my meal. If I finish that is. The portions are generous, I always have leftovers. Plus all the folks who work there are super nice! Be sure to check them out and support local!

This is going to be a difficult review, primarily because the dudes at this place is so nice. The service is phenomenal. But I don't come here for the social aspect. My partner and I's favorite fish spot is in Vallejo. Reason being is after 22 yrs of being in Oakland we still haven't found a stellar fish place. So today we decided to try something new...give Oakland another chance. This was the place we decided based on the reviews. The fried snapper was overcooked, old, frozen fish. So dry the fish itself dried up to a little strip within the overly crisp batter. It also carried that old fish smell. Like either they've been using the same oil for a minute or the fish is just been thawed for a min. They provide a side and a corn muffin with the meal. The muffin was dry and processed. I chose the greens as a side and they were o-k. Quite honestly the greens were the best part of the meal. I also come from a long line of Black soul food cooks so standards are high. It seems like this place is trying to cook soul food but it's missing the soul. Once again the guys at this place are super cool and just on that I've given 2 stars. The ambiance and experience you get once you visit this place is part of the appeal.

I don't think it was catfish! It tasted like it but the meat was brownish and discolored, which sucked because i really really used to like their fish. I'm thinking that the fish was probably Swai (often used as Catfish). The fries and prawns were fine, but I think I'm going to steer clear of the Swai (I mean catfish) ... moving forward!... and it's a shame because I had made my first sweet potato pie (which was on point), and wanted that Friday night soul food fish (prawns), fries, and slaw combo experience ... to go with my pie and vanilla ice cream. Note to self: now learn how to fry fish!

Fish King....is my favorite!! They are always nice and my food is always fried fresh and hot!! The fish, the prawns, the French fries is simply delicious!!! Love this place I have never had any major problems!! Just one time my food was a over-fried...but they get a pass because they were delicious.

Love their portions. Always a good experience when I visit. I love that they are close by and convenient for me, not to mention GOOD! Seasoned just right for me...

Oh THANK YOU. This is the spot for some good fried chicken and shrimps. portions are great and well seasoned. I will definitely come back here.

Best made to order FISH and HOAGIES in oakland in my opinion been going here for years on years.

I just knew that fried fish coming out of Oakland was going to be comparable if not better than I get in Southern Cali but I was disappointed with the taste and lack of seasoning. I will be looking for a place with more soul in their cooking my next visit to Oakland.

I bought a combo #2 . Fries / Shrimp / 3 piece catfish / drink $18 . Food just isn't good any more my fried catfish had a cleaning product taste, as well as mushy. Don't like the flavor of the batter. Service is good they're always nice that's why I didn't ask for the money back but I tried to let them know my experience and they couldn't/didn't want to address my dissatisfaction. They have chairs to wait for your food, so orders takeout. You can call orders in for pickup too
