I was a little worried, because the inside of the restaurant looked nothing like I remembered from several years ago when I visited last. Though my concerns were quickly eliminated once I tried their offerings.Though the menu has changed a bit, the food and service were great. We ordered a fish sauce caramel fried chicken plate with beef tallow fries and Brussels sprouts.Great flavor on all fronts. The chicken was crunchy, a little sweet, and I would definitely order it again. Tallow fries, would be best (as most fries) eaten there, but they were still quite tasty, and the Brussels sprouts were well seasoned with balsamic and bacon.Wifey ordered a bacon burger that came with a salad. The burger was delicious and very rich tasting. The salad was a nice complement. If we're back in the area we would definitely give them a try again.

We went for lunch after a visit to Kaiser from San Jose. And bow we just want to go back to the hospital to visit this place again!!!The food was so delicious. And the service impeccable. The place was cute even on a Wednesday late lunch! Can't wait to come back.

My husband and I were in Oakland and decided to try this place we have been seeing for years. Came in at lunch time and it was pretty busy. There we were greeted right away and the lady at the register answered our questions. The flood came out in a reasonable amount of time. I went with the fried chicken plate and fries it was delicious. The chicken was fresh and hot and well seasoned and the fries were good there was also a little salad that came on the plate the dressing that came on the salad was very good too. My husband enjoyed his chicken sandwich pretty much the same as mine but with bread. We will definitely eat here again.

A solid 3 star meh Cheesesteak.I seriously don't get the hype with the dry meat that needs more seasoning to make it more appealing. The bread was toasted and just tasted like eating a dry toasted roll. The fries were a real disappointment. They tasted like they were from the frozen food section and just fried. I didn't taste the beef tallow that it was supposed to be fried in.My coworker's Cuban sandwich was 3 stars. She recommended this place. The Brussel sprouts were good, 3.5 stars, but very greasy. I'd skip this next time. In fact, I just don't think this joint is for me.

The staff here is so nice, hopefully people can continue to keep this place open by coming. Even if you don't eat meat there are options. The cheese fries are so good and they still have all the old school items from when it first opened like their cheesesteak and hamburger. It looks different in here, but it's the same good food. If you haven't tried their beer cheese then you definitely need to do it. I've also heard it's one of the best hamburgers. It's a beautiful little spot, maybe needs a little help to bring back the vibe (lighting, figure out something to fill the old display butcher area and fridge that held broth, etc). They have other food options outside the old menu, haven't tried it yet, but definitely will come back to do it.

Had a job near this restaurant and decided to pop in for a quick bite. I did not know this spot was famous through Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. I always wanted to go to one of those places, and I got lucky to come to one without knowing. The person behind the counter was extremely friendly. I assume he is the owner. There is a wide range of selection on the menu that can satisfy any of your cravings, however the owner recommended a few items to us. The most appealing of the suggestions to me was the brisket sandwich. It came with a hefty portion of protein. The brisket is seasoned with mustard on the beef, tho... you don't taste the mustard. The fries are top tier fries. Order those as a side is a must. My friend ordered the cheesesteak sandwich, and he said it was great. It came out piping hot, so you know it's fresh. Another friend ordered the pulled pork, and it was devoured within minutes. That speaks to how good it is. The chef also told us that the pulled pork was made in a 24 hour process, which tells you that the flavor is binded into the soul of each bite of the meat rather than just a sauce they pour on. I was really impressed by their hot sauce. I didn't get the name of it, but the bottle looked like it was Oakland owned or maybe it was their own hot sauce. Food came out within minutes. A really solid spot in North Oakland.

I'll forever have a sweet spot for The Cheesesteak Shop (very nostalgic vibes), but if you're looking for a more elevated cheesesteak that reaches new heights with a flavor profile that kicks above the Richter scale, look no further than Clove & Hoof in the Temescal district, Oakland. There aren't many high quality butcher shops remaining in the East Bay, but Clove & Hoof is doing multiple things right...including a second location opening in downtown Oakland & now serving brunch on Sundays! My favorite item is coined "Oakland's Cheesesteak"(thinly sliced tender sirloin, onion confit, grilled and marinated mushrooms, matchstick cut turnips, mayo and warm beer cheese fondue on a hero roll) ~ for $15, I think it's worth every penny. Another highlight is definitely the C&H Cheeseburger that is topped with creamy pimento cheese and caramelized onion jam..with the hand-cut beef tallow fries, you're in for a next level moment. Literally feeling the hunger pains just thinking about it!I would love to try a few other items and cuts of meat going down the menu for next time including the Smoked & Pulled Pork Shoulder, the Hot Pastrami, Classic Cuban or even the Fish Sauce Caramel Fried Chicken! Actually I think I almost named most of the sandwich menu, so looks like it's time to revisit! All in all if you're looking for casual digs, awesome staff and farm to table meat-forward sandwiches, this is your next spot. Also to note, they have killer sides, salads, fun N/A drinks, beer/wine & a special menu for the kiddos. The Town means business and C&H takes their meat seriously..well done!
