The Giving Pies

John D. "Pie HardLocal woman-owned pie shop located in a nondescript Willow Glen strip mall at the edges of The Mighty Guadalupe. They do more than just sweet fruit pies, but savory quiches, tarts, and egg custards. My son decided he'd rather have a fruit pie for his birthday than a cake--he is my son after all! He settled on a blackberry pie so I ambled in after work one day to place an order to be picked up the next day. The Good:*Ordering process could've been smoother, but the guy at the counter was still training so I'll cut them some slack. *Indoor seating for dining in*Tons of different flavors to choose from in almost every category. Definitely can't complain about selection. *Vegan options available *Blackberry pie filling was out-fucking-standing. Nice balance of sweetness helped bring out the natural flavor and slight tartness of the blackberries. *Crumble on top was decent, but had a bit of a raw flour taste. The Meh:*Parking lot is tight but there is some street parking, as well. *A bit pricey but everything is handmade *I'm not 100% how I feel about this part, but their crumble on top contains almond flour; I wasn't aware of this when ordering or I would've bounced seeing as my son has a tree nut allergy. Fortunately, **he** did spot a sign when he and Carissa came to do the pickup the next day, or it could've been a disaster. Now, I get that they have signs and that's great, but they really, really, REALLY should say something to you when you're ordering. Quite frankly, I've never seen a crumble recipe that uses almond flour so I would never think to assume there might be some in the pie--and I'm sure I'm not the only one. The Ugly:*While the filling was fantastic, the bottom crust was the complete opposite. Somehow they managed to overbake and simultaneously underbake the pie crust at the same time. It was stiff as a rock and pale as an albino's ass. Not sure how that happened, but mazel tov? (ノ゚゚)ノConclusion: Great filling but awful crust. Would definitely be willing to give them another shot, tho."

It's the same owner but due to Covid, a fire, and renovations, it's been a long road to recovery. For now, they are open for breakfast and lunch only.My wife and I have eaten here twice so far, for lunch and breakfast, and both times the food was really good, especially the BBQ beef brisquit. The steamed broccoli really hit the spot along with the home made potato salad and cole slaw The breakfast visit we ordered the pancake combo with their home fried potatoes and french toast. Everything tasted home made, especially the salsa and pico de gallo. The restaurant is super clean and has undergone new paint and bar chairs. The staff is extremely nice and attentive. The chef is happy to do any modifications to your order. It is definitely a family place with plenty of parking.I took several pictures to show how nice the interior and exterior is. (See Attached).I also want to mention their in house bakery. The key lime pie is my wife's favorite. Yes, they have cinnamon rolls. This is a must try place!"

It is perfect. I know of no other places where Breakfast is always the same. In a word,-exceptional. The Ribs are exceptional as well. One of my friends ordered the Chicken Fajita Omelet with the same sides and she told Jaimie, our waitress, and owner's daughter, that it was one of her best breakfasts. Another friend enjoyed her Strawberry/Banana smoothie and another enjoyed her Huevos la Mexicana, though she wished she ordered the hashbrowns instead of "home fries" since they were kind of plain. I enjoy potatoes like that if they add onion and green peppers. We enjoyed our coffees with refills. The prices have gone up but so have all the other restaurants and this in comparison seems reasonable."

Service during this visit was mediocre not attentive , understandably, busy night for all the staff . Our group's favorite dish were pork ribs, bitter melon with black bean sauce cooked in clay pot. We could order another plate of their crispy tofu with black pepper & jalapeno. Follow by stirfry ong choy with fermented tofu . who would've thought fermented tofu goes so well together with the leafy vegetables. Hainan chicken dipping sauce were so delicious except I didn't like that. The chicken was refrigerator cold, I know that's how it was supposed to serve . Our two least favorite dishes were the shrimp vermicelli clay pot & the roasted duck noodle soup. "After unsuccessfully stopping by a nearby Mexican restaurant (let's just say the words "pretentious" and "privileged" come to mind after observing how certain guests are welcomed and how certain guests treat other guests), we decided to look for what suits us: satisfying food, decent prices, good service, and a calm/quiet atmosphere. We got what we were looking for when we came to Andale and sat in the outdoor patio. We're not fancy people, but we do know what a good burrito tastes like and what good service looks like. Everything came out piping hot with an abundance, good balance of veggies/protein, and everything was seasoned well. We appreciated the clean and quiet patio outside that was accompanied by the calm trickling of the mini fountain. Cat S. "I never "yelp" a place that I haven't tried at least 3 times, but breaking my own rule here for this one. Ambiance - it's vintage, it's train depot, it's DC comics, it's old diner feel. This is a place to satisfy and savor your time either on your own, or with your love, or with a friend. Watching people roll in here...they're not in a rush, and you shouldn't be, too. It's not just the memorabilia on the wall though that makes this place, it's the owner. You can tell that she's the heart. She is welcoming and warm and friendly and remembers customers! Food - there's regular American food then there's the Filipino breakfasts. Not gonna lie, that's why I'm here because I am always in search for the silogs breakfast places! My filipino heart & soul longs for it, always, even if I can make it at home. I had the Tapsilog (Beef tapa, garlic rice, and 2 eggs). The beef was well marinated with a good dose of flavor, my eggs perfectly cooked, and garlic rice that didn't overwhelm the taste buds - perrrrrfect. The latte I ordered was worth the wait - it was actually the best latte I've ever had. Service - As far I can tell, the owner was an all-in-one package (server, chef, bus person, barista, sunshine, and possible therapist). The service was like walking into a friend's house - it was immediately warm & friendly. She acknowledged my presence letting me know to sit anywhere, while she tended to a table full of regular customers. She took my order with a smile and we ended up having a lovely conversation. Honestly, it was the most relaxing time spent sitting at a table waiting for my food and coffee. Cost - My combo meal was $13.95 for big chunks of beef, a scoop of rice, and 2 eggs. 13 freaking 95! You can't be more reasonable than that, you guys. There are other restaurants that charge $18-$22 for the same damn plate, but at $13.95- I labeled it cheap eats. I don't know what you guys are waiting for...umalis na kayo (leave already)!Cleanliness - OMgee, yessss! As in, the place is clean and so are the bathrooms.I also experienced another surprise when I paid the bill - I wasn't allowed to leave a tip. When I asked about it, the owner said "it's your first time here and I never accept tips from a first time customer". Now when the last time you heard a business say that to you? Exactly. You guys still home?! I said "Tara na!" (Come on, let's go!)"

Allie G. "Consistently cozy! I'd been to Big Basin Cafe a few times before, and loved the warm, homey atmosphere. On a Saturday afternoon, they were pretty busy, but we were able to order at the counter right away. I got a Blueberry Lavender Latte and Avocado Toast. The Blueberry Lavender Latte was incredible - great flavors, perfect for a rainy day. The Avocado Toast was very average, and came with a mountain of sprouts on top, so I ended up picking some off. It was a decent snack, but not particularly filling. Since we were still hungry, my roommate and I got a Mushroom Quiche and slice of Blueberry Pie to share. The Mushroom Quiche was pretty good (cheesy, nice texture), but the Blueberry Pie was easily the highlight. It wasn't overly sweetened, the blueberry filling was delicious, and it went great with whipped cream. They also had a massive selection of pies, so I would love to try more in the future. However, what was absurd was the up charge for the "meal" which was about $4-$5 extra for just a few tater tots. They also tasted stale and like they were from the frozen aisle. Also, the girl at the window isnt very friendly -- almost feels like you're burdening them by giving them business. If you go, call ahead and make sure you just get the burrito. I think they threw in some junk fees on our bill too -- not sure how two breakfast burritos made it to $30 (and then asked for tip after bad window service, lol). Won't be back any time soon."
